The Tears of Former Daegu Mayoral Candidate Lee Jin-sook and the Tasks for the People Power Party
-Lee Sang-seop, Professor Emeritus, Kyungkuk National University
On April 25, Lee Jin-sook stepped down from her position as a preliminary candidate for Daegu Mayor, swallowing her tears. It was deeply poignant, as these were the tears of a person known for her strict self-discipline and rarely showing emotional fluctuations. It is said that not only the citizens of Daegu who supported her but also many others wept along with her.
It was the 73rd day since she declared her candidacy and the 35th day since she was unfairly cut off (excluded from nomination). Although she had consistently been the leading candidate in approval ratings and was unrelated to the grounds for exclusion, the reason given was simply that she would be "used as a bigger talent." It sounded like the old saying, "a ghost eating rice grains."
She must have felt deeply regretful and sorrowful. The People Power Party, the perpetrator, demanded only harsh concessions from the victim rather than focusing on city administration, and the National Assembly members from Daegu were no different, remaining silent as if watching a fire across the river. As Election Day approaches, they have gone to extreme lengths to turn the tables and denounce Lee Jin-sook's independent candidacy as a windfall victory for Kim Boo-kyum. To use a colloquial expression, it is a case of "the pot calling the kettle black."
Although I do not know the exact details, her statement that she would "seek the choice of the citizens of Daegu" was likely a call for participation in the primary and a unified candidacy, not a tactic to divide the opposition. The earnestness in her resignation speech—where she declared, "I cannot let the left wing take over Daegu, the heart of conservatism," and pledged to "supplement the People Power Party candidate decided tomorrow" to ensure their victory—is proof of this.
The timing was also exquisite. Lee Jin-sook's voluntary withdrawal is expected to have a consolidating effect on the conservative camp. This is a world apart from the resignation of Joo Ho-young (6-term) two days ago, which only fueled "internal conflict rather than harmony." This is true putting the party before one's own interests.
** True to the title of her book, "The Magnificent Lee Jin-sook," she ultimately made the courageous decision of self-sacrifice for the party, holding back tears. The resonance of this is far wider and deeper than expected. Some say that in Lee Jin-sook's tears, they saw both a ray of hope for the desperate opposition party and her true worth. This is especially true because she is a figure who has overcome all kinds of trials, including serving as Korea's first female war correspondent, president of Daejeon MBC, and chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission (ministerial level), as well as facing impeachment, reinstatement, dismissal, and even handcuffing. She is praised as a candidate for the next leader, possessing fluent foreign language skills, international acumen, extensive connections, conviction, and fortitude.
The ball is now in the court of the People Power Party. The party must strategically deploy the so-called "method for utilizing Lee Jin-sook." If they demanded concessions by calling her a "valuable asset of the party" whenever they opened their mouths, they should have also presented efficient solutions.
Finally, the showdown between Choo Kyung-ho and Kim Boo-kyum has been realized. Typically, voter turnout for local elections barely reaches around 50%. For both the ruling and opposition parties, victory or defeat hinges on how many of their respective supporters are mobilized to vote. The influx of votes for Lee Jin-sook is paramount, but the real issue is cohesion.
Compared to the powerful ruling party, the current opposition party is worrisome; far from being united, it resembles a dysfunctional family. The very value of an opposition party lies in keeping the ruling party in check, and struggle is essential against an all-powerful ruling party. An opposition party steeped in comfort is utterly helpless, lacking the will, the means, or the courage to fight.
Ultimately, the People Power Party's approval rating has plummeted to 15% (as of the 23rd, NBS), reportedly the lowest since July 2020. It is utterly pathetic, as the party would normally rise by a stroke of luck due to the ruling party's consecutive blunders. Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk bears the primary responsibility.
With the election just around the corner, there are reports that they are trying to prevent the party leader from attending campaign rallies. At this point, he has already lost all leadership, dignity, competence, and credibility as a party leader. It is simply regrettable to see where the lion's roar and spirit he unleashed during last year's party leadership election have vanished to.
Coincidentally, even those confirmed as the party's candidate and party officials are leading the charge in spreading this division. It is truly unbearable to witness them aligning with the major media outlets that have set out to "destroy Jang Dong-hyuk." It is time for Oh Se-hoon, Bae Hyun-jin, and the Han Dong-hoon faction to exercise self-restraint.
The Democratic Party taunts him, claiming they can win any election as long as Representative Jang is in office and urging him to stay. Meanwhile, Kim Ou-joon is shouting "Go, Jang Dong-hyuk!" day after day.
Representative Jang also urgently needs a solution to resolve the situation. Regardless of the outcome of the local elections, declaring that he will not run in the August national convention is the answer. For the People Power Party, which is steeped in comfort, the path forward would be for all members to resign, but since that is clearly out of the question, the only way is to regroup and reorganize their ranks.
I offer this advice because nurturing new talent with ability and conviction is also an urgent task. I hope that Lee Jin-sook’s sacrifice and tears will become the seed of a turning point for the People Power Party.
