Similarities Between the Vietnam War and the Iran-U.S. War

- Columnist Jung Gil-sun

It is not that Iran is currently winning, but rather that if they hold out, they will win; this is also a process of victory. In the past, during the Vietnam War, no one thought that North Vietnam would win. The United States also aggressively propagated that it was winning. Since there was no internet at the time, and social media and AI were non-existent, everyone believed it because they relied entirely on radio, TV in some households, and newspapers for all news. As the righteous, liberal, and democratic U.S. military achieved victory after victory against the communist devil, North Vietnam, people believed that Hanoi would fall tomorrow, North Vietnam would be thoroughly punished, and the superiority of liberal democracy would be proven to the Soviet Union in a showy manner.

However, as time passed, Americans became enraged by the fact that the U.S. military's achievements amounted to merely advancing a few handspans across the 17th parallel—which had divided Vietnam like the 38th parallel—and bombing Hanoi a few times. Consequently, Americans took to the streets in anti-war protests. While everyone assumed that North Vietnam received ample support from China and the Soviet Union, this was limited to the North Vietnamese regular army. The numerous Viet Cong conducting operations against the South utilized the terrain to develop Chinese and Soviet-made bombs and landmines tailored to their own needs. In Vietnam, where bamboo was abundant, operations utilizing these elements were particularly common. They constructed traps and snares using bamboo, sugarcane, palm trees, and banana leaves.

In particular, bamboo trap mines were difficult for the U.S. military to detect, claiming the lives of countless American soldiers. Projectiles made from bamboo were nothing short of a nightmare for the U.S. military. At the time, the Viet Cong lacked proper combat boots and were armed no different from civilians. Consequently, massacres of civilians were frequently committed because the Viet Cong could not be distinguished from civilians. In Iranian terms, these Viet Cong are comparable to the Basij militia. They would strip the tires from U.S. military vehicles to make flip-flops, which they wore. Armed with guns modified to fit their own bodies, they launched surprise attacks on U.S. forces; however, the Viet Cong failed in these surprise attacks every time, with successful instances being few and far between.

Even in such surprise attacks, for every 10 Viet Cong killed, typically 2 or 3 U.S. soldiers would be killed. Of course, efficiency was significantly low, meaning they likely failed to capture even 20% or 30% of the U.S. forces, yet their strategy was to dig tunnels and hold out as long as possible. Meanwhile, operations were underway at the Hanoi headquarters to destabilize the United States from within. It is no coincidence that during the Vietnam War, there was a fierce anti-war movement within the U.S. and that the majority of its allies turned against it. Vietnamese leaders such as Ho Chi Minh and Le Duan thoroughly exploited public opinion within the U.S., and these efforts were highly successful. U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson abandoned his bid for re-election, and Nixon met with China and the Soviet Union to divert the internal atmosphere of unrest.

Amidst this, the Nixon Doctrine emerged, leading to a easing of Cold War tensions, including the reduction of U.S. troops stationed in South Korea, marking a turning point in Asian security. Currently, the Democratic Party within the U.S. is cornering Trump, and public sentiment has largely turned against him due to his numerous gaffes. Even if Trump completes his term under these circumstances, the Republican Party is unlikely to regain power. Furthermore, allies have also begun condemning this war. The economy is also falling into a cesspool, and oil prices are fluctuating wildly. Therefore, a war is not defined solely by a direct confrontation between Iran and the United States. War is defined not only by direct clashes but also by conflicts on a larger scale. In 1973, U.S. forces completely withdrew from South Vietnam. However, such a retreat signifies defeat in war.

Two years later, Saigon fell, and the U.S. Embassy in Saigon carried out an unprecedented evacuation operation. Operation Frequent Wind, featuring helicopter evacuations that are still widely discussed in photographs today, remains forever preserved in history as a subject of ridicule, symbolizing a United States that lost in Vietnam and fled. The fact is that the current Iran-U.S. war is unfolding in a manner similar to the Vietnam War. lukybaby7@gmail.com
