돌이켜보건데 윤석열 전 대통령의 지나친 우향우 행보와 거칠고 서툰 국정운영은 스스로를 허무는 패착으로 작동했다. 급기야 비상계엄 선포라는 무리수까지 두고 말았다. 그럼에도 온갖 비위 혐의로 덕지덕지 분칠된 이재명 체제 도래를 막아야 한다는 여론도 사뭇 적잖이 형성돼 있었다.
하지만 민주당의 파상공세는 가히 살벌할 정도였다. 여러 중대 혐의로 재판을 받고 있던 당시 이재명 대표 구하기가 발등의 불이었다. 이에 압도적 의석수를 앞세운 민주당의 탄핵 발의에 국민의힘 한동훈 전 대표 측이 동조하며 가결됐다. 헌법재판소 또한 이를 인용하며 대선 국면으로 이어졌다.
때문에 이후 치러진 대선은 사실상 그 결과가 정해진 형국이었다. 결국 대선에서 패한 국민의힘은 장동혁 대표 체제로 들어섰으나, 문제는 여전했다. 통합과 혁신의 길로 이끌어야 할 장동혁 대표의 쇠락한 방향성과 미숙함이 그것이다. 물론 한동훈 전 대표 그룹의 지속적인 분탕도 거론하지 않을 수 없다.
지방선거를 목전에 둔 국민의힘은 여러 대내외적 요인이 중첩되며 지리멸렬 그 자체가 되어 있는 형국이다. 지금으로서는 돌파구 마련이 쉽지 않은 지경에 이르고 말았다. 일각에서는 아주 깡그리 무너져야 제정신 차릴 것이라는 냉소마저 나온다. 심지어 텃밭인 영남권 사정도 그리 녹록치 않은 실정이다.
집권세력의 독선적, 파멸적인 입법 폭주에도 불구하고 정당 지지율에서 국민의힘이 민주당에 비해 밀리고 있는 현실이다. 이를 국민의힘 구성원 모두 무겁게 받아들일 수 있어야 한다. 특히 일부 극우 성향 유튜버에게 휘둘리는 정당이라면 차라리 해산하고 새롭게 출발하는 것이 옳은 방향일 수 있다.
시급히 깨달아야 할 점은, 합리적 보수와 중도 성향 유권층을 적극 견인하지 못하고서는 백년하청일 수밖에 없다는 교훈이다. 보다 더 폭넓은 유권층과 호흡하며 공감을 이끌어낼 수 있는 국가적 비전 제시와 함께 진솔한 현실 타개책이 요구된다. 그에 걸맞는 메시지 전달 또한 긴요한 일이라 하겠다.

Can the People Power Party Find a Breakthrough in the Local Elections?

Furthermore, various unfolding political circumstances also place emphasis on the Democratic Party's advantage. Various public opinion poll indicators seem to eloquently attest to this.
Looking back, former President Yoon Suk-yeol's excessive shift to the right and his rough and clumsy management of state affairs acted as self-destructive blunders. Ultimately, he even went so far as to take the unreasonable step of declaring a state of emergency. Nevertheless, there was considerable public opinion that the arrival of a Lee Jae-myung regime, plastered with all sorts of misconduct allegations, had to be prevented.
However, the Democratic Party's relentless offensive was truly brutal. At the time, saving Representative Lee Jae-myung, who was on trial for various serious charges, was an urgent priority. Consequently, the Democratic Party, backed by its overwhelming number of seats, initiated an impeachment motion, which was supported by the faction of former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon and passed. The Constitutional Court also upheld this, leading to the presidential election phase.
For this reason, the outcome of the subsequent presidential election was effectively predetermined. Ultimately defeated in the election, the People Power Party transitioned to a leadership system under Representative Jang Dong-hyuk, but the problems persisted. These included Representative Jang's declining sense of direction and immaturity, which should have guided the party toward a path of unity and innovation. Of course, the continued disruptive behavior of former leader Han Dong-hoon's faction also cannot be overlooked.
With the local elections just around the corner, the People Power Party is in a state of complete disarray due to the confluence of various internal and external factors. It has reached a point where finding a breakthrough is proving difficult. Some even cynically suggest that the party will only come to its senses after a complete collapse. Even the situation in the Yeongnam region, its traditional stronghold, is far from easy.
Despite the ruling power's self-righteous and destructive legislative runaways, the reality is that the People Power Party is lagging behind the Democratic Party in party approval ratings. All members of the People Power Party must take this reality seriously. In particular, if the party is swayed by some far-right YouTubers, it might be better to dissolve and make a fresh start.
The lesson that must be urgently realized is that without actively engaging rational conservatives and centrist voters, the party is bound to remain stuck in a rut forever. Sincere solutions to the current reality are required, along with the presentation of a national vision that resonates with and garners empathy from a broader electorate. Delivering a message commensurate with this is also a critical task.
