Sallekhana in Modern India: Voluntary Attempt at Death
- Oh Jin-tak, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Hallym University
Sallekhana began to be known again in the modern era. Indologist Louis Renou, who visited the Rajasthan region of North India in the 1940s, reported cases of ascetics wishing to perform Sallekhana.
Furthermore, a Dynastic ascetic was witnessed performing Sallekhana alone at Chandragini Rock in Suravanabela Gola in the south under the scorching sun, awaiting his death.
It became widely known beyond Jainism through the Sallekhana performed by the ascetic Shantirgar in 1955.
Shantirgar was an ascetic who revived the strict ascetic traditions of the Dynastic school; he was widely respected as a scholar monk who wandered India naked, ate only one meal a day, practiced silence, and preserved and studied traditional manuscripts. Suffering from incurable cataracts that left him dependent on the assistance of others, he decided to perform Sallekana during a pilgrimage in June 1955. He took the Sallekana vow on July 7 and began a complete fast, passing away on September 18, the 35th day.
Jainist Jaini describes his Sallekana as follows:
In August 1955, at the holy site of Kuntalagiri in Maharashtra, the great soul Shanti Sagar is voluntarily performing a fast leading to death.
As a teacher of the Condypa school, he is facing death in the sacred manner presented by Mahavira approximately 2,500 years ago, after concluding 35 years of monastic life.
From August 14 to September 7, he drank only water; later, when he could no longer drink even water without human assistance, he stopped doing so as well. Reciting Condypa prayers with clear consciousness, he died at dawn on September 18. His sacred and whole life, and his peaceful manner of death, are revered by Jains.
Jains overseas also practice Salekhana. Bhagawati, a retired doctor who settled in the United States, was a Jain with terminal colon cancer. Exhausted from surgery and chemotherapy, she wondered if Salekhana was possible in the U.S.
She wanted her Salekhana to be performed publicly. Through interviews, she expressed her beliefs and determination regarding Salekhana, and together with her husband, she drafted a document declaring that Salekhana is not suicide but a religious right.
She took the Salekhana vow after receiving confirmation from her doctor that there was no longer any way to treat her. She passed away at her home on July 7, 2013, through Salekhana.
Approximately 200 people die from Salekhana in India every year.
Through various cases, Salekhana has gradually become widely known to the world. According to a 2010 survey, 465 people performed Salekhana in 2008 and 550 in 2009.
According to a 2015 survey, over 400 people performed Salekhana in the past seven years in Mumbai alone, a region with a large Jain population. The number of Jains who perform Salekhana annually is higher than expected.
According to D. S. Bhaya, an annual average of about 240 people perform Salekhana. While the duration of Salekhana varies from person to person, it is generally reported to take about 4 days to 2 weeks if one does not drink water, or 40 to 60 days if it is prolonged.
