The Inside Story of U.S. Giant Oracle Lays Off 30,000 Global Employees Without Notice
18 percent of Oracle's total workforce of 162,000 vanished at once...

April 1st is April Fool's Day, and I encountered news that felt like a lie. At 6 a.m. yesterday, March 31st, U.S. Pacific Time, Oracle laid off 30,000 employees worldwide via a single email without any prior notice. The subject line was ordinary: "Important Notice." However, the content was brutal. "Your job duties have been terminated. Today is your last day of work. Access to the system will be blocked immediately." The signature was "Oracle Leadership." There was no prior contact from the HR department, no conversation with direct supervisors, and no advance notice whatsoever. It was just a single email.
The number of layoffs is estimated to be between 20,000 and 30,000, meaning 18 percent of Oracle's total workforce of 162,000 vanished at once. A company that had recorded all-time highs in revenue and net profit forced its employees onto the streets in just a few hours. The phrase "I woke up and found myself unemployed" flooded social media. Some checked their emails while still in their pajamas drinking coffee, while others received their layoff notices on the subway during their commute.
This cannot be viewed merely as a simple case of layoffs. It marks the moment an era comes to a close. Behind this massive restructuring lies a calculated move to secure funding for AI infrastructure projects. Reducing the workforce by 30,000 employees generates an additional annual cash flow of $8 billion to $10 billion (approximately 15 trillion KRW). Oracle is pouring that money into the construction of AI data centers. Servers, power, cooling systems, and fiber optic cables—massive facilities worth billions of dollars are being prepared all over the world.
Faced with a disadvantage in the cloud business compared to its competitors, Oracle has decided to make AI model training and inference services its core focus. Repetitive tasks, data processing, customer support, and software maintenance—all of which were once performed by human employees—are increasingly being replaced by AI. Officially, they use the term "efficiency," but their true intentions are clear. The moment a single human is replaced by a single AI server, costs plummet and profits skyrocket. This is the real reason.
The fact that 30,000 people were laid off literally "overnight" is shocking, but this is not unique to Oracle. Last year, Meta laid off 4,100 people and Google 1,000 under the pretext of AI efficiency. Amazon dismissed 30,000 employees in 2025 alone. They all share the same reason. Despite generating astronomical profits, they are discarding human beings under the guise of "investment" for the future. This case involving Oracle is merely the naked face of "capital," which has blatantly revealed its intent without even allowing for any emotional respite.
Marx described capitalism as "a movement to multiply value." The core is not the human being, but value. Humans are merely the medium for carrying out that movement, beings who can be eliminated at any time when they are no longer needed. This incident has reproduced that proposition with excessive faithfulness. This is the path chosen by capital to multiply itself more rapidly.
Why now? Has the time already come for AI to replace humans? To put it bluntly, the time has come when GPUs are more important than people. At least for IT companies, "yes."
Tech companies have been talking about automation and AI for years. However, it is no coincidence that massive layoffs and data center investments are occurring simultaneously at this point. This signifies that the qualitative transformation of the means of production has reached a critical point. To put it in Marxist terms, it is the moment when the development of productive forces begins to pressure existing relations of production.
What Oracle has chosen is not labor, but infrastructure. Data centers, power, cooling systems, and hundreds of thousands of computing units. These are the new means of production. If textile factories of the past required a large number of wage laborers, today's data centers require computing power. And that replaces humans.
Marx explained the phenomenon that occurs when machines are introduced as an increase in the "relative surplus population." Technology increases productivity, but at the same time, it renders some workers unnecessary. The important point is that this is not a temporary phenomenon, but a structural inevitability. These layoffs represent the modern form of that very inevitability. This is not because AI performs all tasks perfectly, but because capital no longer feels the need to rely on human labor. Many say that “AI is replacing humans,” but this expression obscures the essence. What is actually happening is not technology pushing humans out, but a process in which capital eliminates humans through technology. Technology is merely a tool, and the choice always belongs to capital.
If we compress the timeline, this is not a problem unique to IT companies. Workers no longer have the time to adapt to change. In the past, workers laid off from factories had room to move to other industries. However, the situation is different now. AI is rapidly encroaching upon almost all knowledge work, not just specific industries. The transition to AI is expanding horizontally, extending to fields such as accounting, design, and law.
Then, can capitalism be sustained without human labor? While Marx did not leave a clear answer to this, he provides a clue through the structural contradictions of capitalism. Capital creates value through labor, yet simultaneously tends to reduce it. This contradiction creates continuous instability within the system. As the workforce decreases, consumption also declines, which in turn constrains the accumulation of capital. This contradiction implies that capitalism will eventually come to require human labor.
However, at this juncture where AI has begun to replace humans, we must ask a more critical question: Are humans merely a factor within the relations of production, or are they something more?
Therefore, the current era requires philosophical reflection on aspects beyond what Marx did not anticipate. Humans are not merely factors of production, but masters of everything. This proposition must serve as the standard for viewing reality. No matter how advanced technology becomes or how massive capital grows, it is ultimately humans who create it and determine its direction.
The limitation of Marxism lies in the fact that while it excels at structurally analyzing the relationship between capital and labor, it fails to place humans at the center. Through historical materialism, Marxism defines humans as members of a class and products of the relations of production. It posits that human consciousness and behavior are ultimately determined by the economic foundation. However, this is a fundamental error that degrades humans to passive beings. Humans are not merely products of the environment, but agents who transform it, and the masters of everything. Humans possess a consciousness to shape their own destiny and have emergent qualities; this is precisely the decisive force that creates history. Viewing humans merely as tools of class struggle or as one of the relations of production fails to properly capture their essential dignity. Reality is far more complex and magnificent than that. A human-centered mindset is not a mere ideal, but the sole starting point for judging all social, economic, and technological phenomena.
Humans are not products of the environment, but agents who transform it. Technology, capital, and institutions are all creations of humans. Therefore, a situation where these elements overwhelm humans is not a normal state. Rather, it is closer to a state where humans have lost their own position.
Oracle's recent decision demonstrates this loss in an extreme way. Data centers are being built in the place where tens of thousands of workers have disappeared. However, it is ultimately humans who design, construct, and operate those data centers. It is also humans who created AI. Nevertheless, those humans are being pushed to the periphery rather than the center of the system. This contradiction cannot be explained by simple economic logic. This implies that the relationship between humans and technology has been misdefined. It is worth reflecting on whether technology exists to help humans, or if humans exist to maintain technology. The current direction is clearly closer to the latter. And if this direction continues, it could shake the very meaning of human existence, going beyond the issue of labor.
Therefore, this incident is not merely a matter of dismissal. It is a question of how humans define themselves.
Progress without people is ultimately hollow. It only has meaning when humans stand at the center. Technology must be a means, and capital must be a tool. If that relationship is reversed, no matter how high the productivity and efficiency achieved, it is not human progress. Oracle's choice may certainly be rational. Reducing costs and investing in future industries is a natural decision in corporate logic. However, that rationality takes on a different meaning from a human perspective. It is a rationality that excludes humans.
Will technology and capital be reorganized around humans, or will humans be pushed to the periphery? And who must decide the answer? Ultimately, it is humans once again.
