BTS's Purple Cheers in Gwanghwamun... Beyond a 'One-time Event' to a 'Strategic Asset for K-Tourism'
-Kim Yoon-kyung, Student, Graduate School of Business Administration, Chungnam National University
Not long ago, Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul once again became a landmark for the world. The tens of thousands of people who gathered to watch BTS perform proved the unrivaled physical pull of K-content.
For me, having spent years on the ground managing the attraction of foreign tourists and witnessing the ups and downs of Korean tourism, this scene was moving yet simultaneously presented a weighty challenge. Are we truly prepared to transform the energy of this explosive fandom beyond a one-time event into a sustainable ‘tourism industry’ at the national level?
Contents Tourism is a high-value-added business that goes beyond the mere act of visiting specific locations, translating the emotional impact of content into real-life consumption and experiences.
However, what is our current state? The recurring controversies surrounding inflated accommodation prices and a lack of infrastructure whenever large-scale performances are held, as well as the exodus of tourists as soon as the show ends, remain persistent challenges. We must now move beyond a passive attitude of relying solely on the power of content and establish more sophisticated and multi-dimensional tourism strategies.
First is the vertical expansion of 'Stay Value.'
Attending a performance should be merely a tourist's 'motivation to visit,' not their entire 'purpose of stay.' Beyond a simple 'pilgrimage' following an artist's footsteps, there is a need for integrated products that allow for an in-depth experience of Korea's unique lifestyle (K-Lifestyle).
We must physically extend tourists' length of stay by organically connecting unique Korean cultural experiences, relaxation, and high-quality service infrastructure before and after the performance. An increase in the length of stay leads to an expansion of tourism spending, which becomes a key driving force for revitalizing the local economy.
Second is the horizontal expansion of 'Tourism Hubs.'
A 'network tourism' strategy is essential to disperse the energy of content tourism, currently concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, across the entire country. We must leverage well-established transportation networks to link performance cities with nearby hub cities into a single tourism belt.
We must design sophisticated routes that allow fans who enjoyed a performance in Seoul to discover the true beauty of Korea amidst the tranquil scenery of the provinces and enjoy special experiences unique to those locations. Expanding spatial reach is the path to solving the problem of overtourism while simultaneously transforming the entire Republic of Korea into one massive exhibition space for content.
Third is the securing of 'Experience Continuity.'
The emotional impact tourists feel on-site is easily ephemeral. However, if on-site experiences are recorded as digital data and can be continuously enjoyed even after returning home, Korean tourism will evolve from 'one-time visits' into a 'lifelong fandom.'
We must continuously provide triggers for revisits by utilizing advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to allow travelers to preserve their travel moments as high-quality content and continue those experiences in virtual spaces. From a management perspective, the completion of a business is determined not when the customer's purchase ends, but when the relationship with the brand deepens. What BTS left behind in Gwanghwamun was more than just enthusiastic cheers. It is a powerful market signal that the entire world desires to experience the brand known as "Republic of Korea."
More important than rowing while the tide is in is creating a course that allows the ship to continue moving forward.
If we fail to sublimate this enthusiasm into a sophisticated national tourism strategy, the cheers in Gwanghwamun will remain nothing more than an expensive, one-off event. Now is the time to move beyond mere admiration and implement a cool-headed business plan for the "Post-Content."
