역사는 언제나 개방과 통합이 쇄국과 분열을 이겼다. “성을 쌓는 자는 망하고, 길을 내는 자 흥한다.” 돌궐의 명장 톤유쿠크(646~726)가 남긴 말이다. 500여 년이 흘러 칭기즈칸(1162~1227)이 조랑말로 길을 내는 이 정신으로 세계를 정복했다. 넓고 넓은 몽골 초원에는 성이란 없고, 말이 달릴 수 있는 초원의 길이 끝없이 펼쳐진다.
로마제국(BCE(기원전) 27년~1453년)은 어떤가. “모든 길은 로마로 통한다”는 말처럼, 로마는 사방팔방으로 뻗은 길, 도로 네트워크를 통한 개방성으로 오랫동안 세계를 다스렸다. 조선은 쇄국과 분열로 망했다. 유럽이 근대화와 산업화로 달려갈 때, 조선은 시대에 뒤처진 쇄국과 사색당파로 갈기갈기 찢어진 분열의 길로 갔다. 중국 청나라도 그래서 망했다.
우리 정치도 그랬다. 결국 개방과 연대, 통합주의자가 이겼다. DJ(김대중)는 보수파 JP(김종필)와의 ‘DJP(김대중+김종필)연대’로 대통령으로 당선됐다. DJ는 통합의 정치로 정권재창출에 성공했다.
노무현 대통령도 정몽준과의 ‘진보+중도보수’ 단일화로 대통령에 당선됐다. 문재인 대통령은 박근혜 탄핵이라는 특수한 상황에서 대통령에 당선됐다. 이재명 대통령도 윤석열 탄핵이라는 특수한 상황에서 대통령에 당선됐다.
정상적인 대통령 선거에서 진보세력은 독자적으로 당선된 적이 없다. 언제나 연대와 통합을 통해 강고한 보수의 벽을 넘었다.
보수 대통령인 박근혜와 윤석열은 독자적인 보수후보로 대통령 선거에 당선됐지만, 극우 노선을 걸으며 중도세력을 잃고 결국 종말을 자초했다. 이명박 대통령은 집권 중반기 이후 중도실용노선을 걸으며 보수정권 재창출에 성공했다.
뻔 하지 않은가. 진보는 끊임없이 외연확장을 하지 않으면 정권재창출이 불가능하다는 사실 말이다. 그런데, 이재명 대통령 임기가 1년도 안 되었는데 무슨 분열이고 갈라치기인가. 무슨 차기 후계 논란인가. 어떤 이유든 분열의 용어를 사용해서는 안 된다. 유튜브든 논평가든 어떤 언론매체든 어떤 사람이든, 자신의 말과 행동에 책임을 져야 한다.
여당으로 정권재창출에 성공한 새천년민주당이 열린 우리당으로 분당한 분열의 역사에서 뼈저린 교훈을 얻어야 한다. 누구의 잘잘못을 따지기 전에, 승자는 없고 모두 패자였다는 냉정한 평가를 받아들여야 한다.
당시 새천년민주당 분열의 씨앗도 당원과 지지자 갈라치기에서 비롯됐다. 당원은 그냥 당원이다. 당원을 구분 짓고, 차별하고, 서열화하지 마라. 거대한 댐도 개미구멍에서 무너지기 시작한다. 분열의 용어는 사악한 뱀의 혀처럼 위험하다.
국민은 누가 분열주의자인지, 통합주의자인지 귀신같이 안다. 국민을 우습게보지 마라. 아무리 현란한 세 치 혀라도, 결코 진실을 이기지 못한다. 또다시 진보가 분열의 길로 가서는 안 된다. 모두가 망하는 지름길이기 때문이다. 쇄국과 분열은 과거요, 개방과 통합은 미래다. 장강의 앞 물이 뒷물에 밀려가듯, 과거는 아무리 발버둥 쳐도 결국 미래에 자리를 내 줄 수밖에 없다.

On the vast Mongolian steppes, there are no walls; instead, endless grassland paths stretch out where horses can run.
What about the Roman Empire (27 BCE–1453)? Joseon perished due to isolationism and division. While Europe raced toward modernization and industrialization, Joseon followed a path of fragmentation, torn apart by outdated isolationism and factionalism. Our politics were no different. Ultimately, proponents of openness, solidarity, and integration prevailed. DJ (Kim Dae-jung) was elected president through the "DJP (Kim Dae-jung + Kim Jong-pil) alliance" with the conservative JP (Kim Jong-pil). DJ succeeded in retaining power through a politics of integration.
President Roh Moo-hyun was also elected through a unification of "progressives and moderate conservatives" with Chung Mong-joon. President Moon Jae-in was elected under the unique circumstances of the impeachment of Park Geun-hye. President Lee Jae-myung was also elected under the unique circumstances of the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol.
In normal presidential elections, progressive forces have never been elected independently. They have always overcome the formidable wall of conservatism through solidarity and integration.

We must learn a painful lesson from the history of division in which the Millennium Democratic Party, which had succeeded in retaining power as the ruling party, split into the Uri Party. Before assigning blame, we must accept the cold assessment that there were no winners, and everyone was a loser.
The seeds of the division within the Millennium Democratic Party at the time also stemmed from the divisive tactics used to separate party members from supporters. A party member is simply a party member. Do not categorize, discriminate against, or rank party members. Even a massive dam begins to collapse from a tiny ant hole. The term "division" is as dangerous as the tongue of a wicked serpent.
The public knows with uncanny precision who is a divisive figure and who is a proponent of integration. Do not underestimate the people. No matter how dazzling a glib tongue may be, it can never defeat the truth. Progressives must not once again walk the path of division, for it is a shortcut to ruin for everyone. Isolationism and division are the past, while openness and integration are the future. Just as the waters of the Yangtze River are pushed back by the current, the past, no matter how hard it struggles, will inevitably have to make way for the future.
