6.3 지자체 선거를 앞두고 국민의힘 지도부의 공천관리가 도를 넘어서고 있다. 대구시장 여론조사에서 1, 2위를 다투는 후보인 이진숙, 주호영 후보를 컷오프, 논란이 격화됐다. 이어 서울시장 후보군 선정에도 잡음이 끊이지 않고 있다. 오세훈, 박수민, 윤희숙 후보 3인 경쟁으로 확정지었으나 앞서 오세훈 현 시장에 대해 추가 접수기간을 지나 후보로 받아줬다. 당이 저자세로 일관했다는 비판과 함께 정상적으로 접수한 이상규 후보는 가타부타 설명 없이 컷오프하며 이해할 수 없는 행보를 이어가고 있다.
충북도지사 후보공모에서도 이정현 공관위원장은 ‘충주맨’을 발굴한 것으로 유명한 조길형 전 충주시장을 비롯해 윤희근 전 경찰청장, 윤갑근 변호사 등 기존 공천을 한 후보들 뿐 아니라 김영환 현 충청북도지사도 입후보하며 출사표를 던졌다. 하지만 김영환 지사는 경선도 치러보지 못하고 축출 당했다. 김영환 현 지사는 지난 제8회 전국동시지방선거에서 당시 노영민 전 대통령비서실장을 꺾고 당선됐었다. 충청북도의 도지사는 12년간 이시종 전 지사의 아성을 넘지 못한 철옹성과 같은 지역이어서 의미가 컸다. 김영환 지사 같은 경쟁력 있는 후보를 컷오프하며 탈락이유를 설명하지 않은 채 ‘새로운 인물’을 강조하며 추가접수를 예고 했다. 기다렸다는 듯이 김수민 전 충청북도 정무부지사가 공천에 추가접수 했다. 김수민 전 정무부지사는 비례대표로 국회에 입성한 후 1년간 충청북도의 정무부지사로 행정경험을 한 것이 전부로 선거경험이나 행정경험이 일천해 ‘기획공천’이라는 말까지 나올 정도다.

대구에서는 선거판도를 뒤흔들 정도로 알 수 없는 공천으로 사실상 더불어민주당에 안방을 헌납하는 것 아니냐는 비판이 일었다.
최근 각종 조사에서 대구시장 지지도에서 1, 2위를 다투던 이진숙 전 방송통신위원장과 주호영 국회부의장을 경선도 치러보지 못하고 탈락시킨 처사에 대해 이해할 수 없다는 반응이 주를 이뤘다. 후보들도 이에 대해 재심을 요청하고 법적 대응까지 예고하는 등 거센 항의를 이어가고 있다.
실제로 지난 여론조사에서 출마선언을 앞둔 더불어민주당의 사실상 단일후보로 꼽히는 김부겸 후보와의 가상 양자대결에서 이진숙, 주호영, 추경호 후보는 승리한 반면 유영하, 윤재옥, 최은석, 이재만, 홍석준 후보는 패배하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 영남일보가 리얼미터에 의뢰해 지난 3월 22~23일 무선 ARS 100% 대구시장 후보 적합도를 조사한 결과 이 전 방통위원장이 24.9%의 지지를 얻으며 1위를 차지했다. 주호영 국회 부의장이 18.6%로 2위에 올랐다. 추경호 전 경제부총리 12.6%, 유영하 의원 5.3%, 윤재옥 전 당대표 권한대행 4.5%, 최은석 의원 3.6%, 이재만 전 대구 동구청장 3.1%, 홍석준 전 의원 2.5% 등으로 추경호 후보를 제외하고 6% 이하의 저조한 성적표를 받아들었다.
경쟁력 있는 훌륭한 후보를 두고 가상대결에서 조차 패배하는 후보로 경선을 치른다는 것은 대구시민들의 여론을 거스르더라도 ‘어차피 대구는 국민의힘’이라는 오만함에서 비롯된 것 아니냐는 비판이 주를 이루고 있다. 리얼미터의 같은 조사에서 컷오프 논란 발생 다음 날인 23일 국민의힘의 지지율은 42%를 기록하며 전날 48.9%보다 6.9% 하락했다. 반면 더불어민주당의 지지율은 29.1%에서 36.5%로 7.4%포인트 껑충 뛰어오르며 오차범위로 접근하며 매서운 상승세를 보이고 있다.
수도권과 부산 등 주요 격전지에서 승리를 장담하지 못하는 가운데 그나마 보수의 본진이라고 평가되는 대구에서 처음으로 패배한다면 보수정당인 국민의힘의 동력이 약해질 것은 자명하다. 이는 안 그래도 국정 전반에서 독재에 가까운 폭정을 이어가는 이재명 정부를 견제할 목소리가 사라지는 악순환으로 이어진다. 경쟁력 있는 후보 공천없이 안일한 자세로 선거에 임한다면 믿었던 대구시민들도 자포자기의 심정으로 투표포기나 역(逆) 선택으로 돌아설 수 있다는 이야기다. 무엇보다 대진 상대로 꼽히는 김부겸 후보는 보수당에 몸담은 경험이 있어 시민들로부터 거부감이 덜한데다 국무총리까지 역임해 이에 걸맞는 몸값을 가진 후보를 찾기가 어려운 것이 현실이다.
국민의힘 공천관리위원회의 역할은 공정한 선거 관리가 주목적이다. 물론 좋은 후보 공천을 위해 더불어민주당과 같이 일찌감치 단일후보를 선정하고 선거전에 돌입하는 것도 역할 중 하나일 수 있다. 그렇지만 공천의 잡음이 끊이지 않고 이로 인해 민심이반이 발생한다면 아무리 보수의 성지인 대구일지라도 승리를 장담할 수 없다. 지금이라도 선거 전반에 공정한 경선을 통해 민심이 원하는 후보 공천이 이루어져야 한다. 그래야만 경선 흥행은 물론이고 깨끗한 승복을 통한 표심 결집이 가능한 것이다. 상상하기도 싫은 상황이지만 유력 후보들이 공관위의 불공함을 주장하며 무소속으로 무서운 경쟁자로 등장한다면 국민의 표를 잠식할 뿐 아니라 보수정당의 근간을 흔들 수 있는 무시무시한 상황으로 번질 수 있다. 불공정한 경쟁으로 민심을 얻는 것은 어불성설(語不成說)이다. 지금이라도 공정한 경선으로 민심을 바로잡길 기대한다.
