문제는 단순한 국민의식 부족에 그치지 않는다. 현재 한국의 안보 체계와 정보 기관은 김정은의 발언 수준에 맞설 준비가 되어 있는가? 국방부가 아직도 이름과 조직만 ‘방어’ 중심일 뿐, 미국처럼 전쟁·작전 중심의 위기 대응 구조로 전환된 것은 아니다. 더 심각한 것은 간첩·첩보 활동을 실제로 감시·대응할 기관이 제대로 기능하는지조차 의문이라는 점이다. 국방과 정보, 국민 안전을 담당해야 할 시스템 자체가 ‘공백’인 상태에서 북한의 위협은 단순한 위협이 아니라 실존적 위험으로 다가오고 있다.
더 놀라운 현실은 언론과 일부 여론의 태도다. 이란 같은 자유세계의 안보를 위협하는 국가에 대해 미국과 이스라엘이 군사적 대응을 취할 때, 국내 일부 언론과 시민은 마치 ‘두둔’하는 듯한 태도를 보인다. 북한의 위협 앞에서조차 경각심보다 안보 무감각과 정치적 논리만 앞서는 사회적 분위기와 맞물리며, 국민 안전은 뒷전으로 밀려 있다.
이제는 정부와 정치권, 국민 모두가 정신을 차려야 한다. 더불어민주당과 이재명 정부는 안보를 정치적 쟁점으로만 다루지 말고, 실질적 대응과 국민 의식 제고에 책임을 져야 한다. 국방부는 이름만 방위부가 아니라, 미국처럼 전쟁부로 전환해 전쟁과 위협에 즉각 대응할 수 있는 체계를 갖춰야 한다. 언론은 안보를 정치적 도구로 삼는 대신, 사실과 위험성을 명확히 전달해야 한다. 국민 각자는 안보 불감증에서 벗어나, 실질적 위협을 인식하고 경계하는 사회적 습관을 가져야 한다.

김정은의 경고는 단순한 외교적 수사가 아니다. 우리의 안보 체계와 국민 의식이 준비되지 않은 상태에서, 그의 발언은 현실적 위협이 될 수 있다. 더 이상 ‘잠자는 호랑이’를 지켜보기만 해서는 안 된다. 지금이야말로 대한민국 안보와 국민 안전에 대해 모든 국민과 정치권, 언론이 냉정히 점검하고 행동해야 할 시점이다.

The problem does not stop at a simple lack of public awareness. Are South Korea’s current security system and intelligence agencies prepared to counter the level of Kim Jong-un’s remarks? The Ministry of National Defense remains “defense-oriented” only in name and organization; it has not transitioned to a crisis response structure centered on war and operations, like that of the United States. Even more serious is the fact that it is questionable whether the agencies responsible for actually monitoring and responding to espionage and intelligence activities are functioning properly. With the very systems responsible for national defense, intelligence, and public safety in a state of "blank space," the threat from North Korea is looming not merely as a threat, but as an existential danger.
Even more shocking is the attitude of the media and some public opinion. When the United States and Israel take military action against nations like Iran that threaten the security of the free world, some domestic media and citizens adopt an attitude that seems to "defend" them. Coupled with a social atmosphere where security apathy and political logic take precedence over vigilance even in the face of North Korea's threat, public safety is being pushed to the back burner.
Now, the government, political circles, and the public must all come to their senses. The Democratic Party of Korea and the Lee Jae-myung administration must not treat national security merely as a political issue, but must take responsibility for practical responses and raising public awareness. The Ministry of National Defense must not remain a Ministry of Defense in name only, but must transform into a Ministry of War, like the United States, to establish a system capable of immediate response to war and threats. The media must clearly convey the facts and the dangers, rather than using national security as a political tool. Every citizen must break free from security complacency and cultivate a social habit of recognizing and guarding against real threats.
Kim Jong-un's warning is not mere diplomatic rhetoric. In a situation where our security system and public awareness are unprepared, his remarks can become a real threat. We must no longer simply stand by and watch the "sleeping tiger." Now is the time for all citizens, the political sphere, and the media to coolly assess the security and safety of the Republic of Korea and take action.
