영화 <왕과 사는 남자>는 1457년 청령포, 마을의 부흥을 위해 유배지를 자처한 촌장과 왕위에서 쫓겨나 유배된 어린 선왕의 이야기다.
이번 <왕과 사는 남자>에서 유해진은 인간미 넘치는 광천골 촌장 엄흥도 역을, 박지훈은 왕위에서 쫓겨나 유배된 단종 이홍위 역을, 유지태는 당대 최고의 권력자 한명회 역을, 전미도 단종 이홍위를 보필하는 궁녀 매화 역을, 김민은 엄흥도의 아들 태산 역을 맡았다.

유해진은 <왕과 사는 남자>를 통해 호흡을 맞춘 박지훈은에 대해 “박지훈과는 영화 내내 호흡을 맞췄는데, 박지훈의 눈을 보니 깊이가 대단하더라. 박지훈의 눈을 보면 감정이 자연스럽게 만들어지게끔 해준다. 촬영하면서도 고마웠고, 완성된 영화를 보면서도 그런 생각이 드는 것 같다”고 극찬을 아끼지 않았다.

장항준 감독은 <왕과 사는 남자> 캐스팅 관련해 “유해진은 시나리오를 쓸때부터 생각하고 있었고, 두근거리는 마음으로 대본을 드리니 하고 싶다고 해서 기뻤다. 박지훈은 ‘약한영웅’이라는 드라마를 추천해줘서 봤는데, 단종 역할에 딱이었다. 배우로서 뚜렷한 이미지가 없어서 좋았는데, 캐스팅 후 글로벌 스타가 됐다보니 너무 행복했다. 유해진과 박지훈은 현장에서도 서로를 아끼고 존중하는 것이 보였다. 좋은 태도를 가진 분들이 마음을 열고 연기해주니 좋은 시너지가 나오지 않았나 싶다”고 전했다.
이어 “그동안 여러 작품에서 한명회를 맡았던 분들이 왜소하고 톤이 높은 연기를 주로 선보였는데, 실제 기록을 찾아보니 기골이 장대하고 얼굴이 수려하고 무예에 출중했다더라. 그동안 한명회는 간신의 형태로 그려졌는데, 당대 최고의 권력자로 새롭게 그리고 싶었다. 그때 떠오르는 사람은 유지태, 마동석이었다. 당연히 유지태가 해줬으면 했는데, 흔쾌히 결정해줬다”며 “전미도가 연기한 매화는 실제 있었던 6명의 궁녀를 하나의 캐릭터로 만든 인물이다. 역할이 작다보니 해줄까 싶었는데, 만나고나서 분량이 늘어났다. 제 상상력을 자극시켜줬고, 다음 작품에서도 꼭 함께 하자는 이야기를 건넸다. 김민과는 3번째 작품을 했는데, 많은 것을 가진 배우다. 옆에서 성장하는 것을 계속 보고싶다. 김민은 당연히 출연을 결정해줬고, 좋은 연기를 선보여줘서 고맙다”고 말했다.
<왕과 사는 남자>의 악역 한명회를 연기한 유지태는 “감독님이 기존 한명회와는 다른 힘이 있는 한명회를 그리고 싶다고 해서 저 역시 새로운 한명회를 그리고 싶었다. 제 연기톤이나 제가 영화에서 해야할 부분에 대해 꾸준히 연구하고 연구했다. 실존 인물을 연기한다는 것은 배우로서 큰 부담인데, 제 나름의 인물을 잘 만들어내고 싶었다”고 밝혔다.
