도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 10일(현지시간) 이란 정부의 강경 진압으로 격화되고 있는 이란 내 반정부 시위 사태 관련해 "미국은 도울 준비가 돼 있다"며 전날에 이어 거듭 개입 가능성을 시사했다.
미 'WSJ(월스트리트저널)' '액시오스' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 자신의 트루스소셜 글을 통해 "이란은 아마 그 어느 때보다 자유를 갈망하고 있다"며 이같이 밝혔다.
'WSJ'에 따르면 트럼프 행정부는 이란에 대한 군사 목표물 타격 방안을 검토한 것으로 알려졌다. 또 '액시오스'는 미국 행보 관련해 "이란 내 불안 고조 속 시위대엔 힘을 실어주고, (알리 하메네이) 정권엔 압박을 가하려는 의도로 풀이된다"고 분석했다.
앞서 지난 9일(현지시간)에도 트럼프 대통령은 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 석유·가스 기업 경영자들과의 회의에서 이란 정권이 시위대를 살해할 시 좌시 않겠다고 한차례 경고한 바 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 "이란 상황을 주시하고 있고, 이란 정권이 과거처럼 사람들을 죽이기 시작한다면 개입할 것"이라며 "이란이 아픈 곳을 매우 세게 때리겠다"며 사실상 군사적 개입 가능성을 시사했다.
현재 이란은 물가 폭등·화폐 가치 하락 등에 따른 반정부 시위가 전역으로 확산 중이다. 이에 이란 정부가 지난 48시간 동안 인터넷 서비스를 중단했으나 일론 머스크의 스타링크 위성 서비스를 통해 테헤란 등지 대규모 시위 영상이 계속 소셜미디어를 통해 공유되고 있다.
이날 미국에 본부를 둔 이란 인권단체 'HRANA'는 보도자료를 통해 "지난 2주간 이란 전역 31개 주·185개 도시·총 574곳에서 시위가 벌어졌다"며 "시위로 116명이 사망하고 2638명이 체포됐다"고 밝혔다.
사망자 중 시위대 79명, 보안 요원 38명 등으로 시위대 사망자 중 최소 7명은 18세 미만 미성년자로 파악된 가운데 'HRANA'는 "시위대 사망자 대부분 근거리에서 실탄·산탄총에 맞아 숨졌다"고 실상을 전했다.
