민주당 전남도당은 오는 1월 12일 오전 10시, 전남도당 회의실에서 제2차 상무위원회의를 열고 ‘전남·광주 통합 추진’에 대한 당론 의결을 진행한다고 밝혔다.
전남도당은 이번 통합 추진이 단순한 행정구역 개편을 넘어, 현재 지역이 직면한 인구 감소와 산업 정체라는 구조적 위기를 극복하기 위한 '전략적 선택'이라는 점을 명확히 할 예정이다. 광역 단위의 통합을 통해 규모의 경제를 실현하고 지역 경쟁력을 획기적으로 높이겠다는 구상이다.

특히 전남도당은 통합 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 지역 간 갈등을 의식해 “어느 일방의 희생이나 종속은 결코 있어서는 안 된다”는 점을 분명히 했다. 이를 위해 현행 청사 유지와 더불어 행정·재정·권한의 공정한 운영 원칙을 당론으로 못 박을 방침이다.
