이 의원은 지난 10일 목포에서 열린 ‘전남의 목소리, 타운홀 미팅’에 참석해 “광주와 전남의 통합은 기정사실화된 흐름”이라며, 특히 “지난 9일 이재명 대통령과의 오찬 간담회에서도 통합의 필요성에 대해 자연스럽게 의견 일치를 봤다”고 밝혀 통합 논의가 급물살을 탈 것임을 시사했다.(사진)
이 의원은 행정통합의 시급성을 강조하며 구체적인 목표 시한으로 ‘오는 7월 이전’을 제시했다. 그는 “곧 있을 2차 공공기관 이전에 있어서도 분산된 대응보다는 통합된 지역이 압도적인 이익을 확보할 수 있을 것”이라며 통합이 가져올 실질적인 실익을 강조했다.
아울러 서남권의 오랜 숙원인 ‘목포·무안·신안 통합’에 대해서도 긍정적인 입장을 내놨다. 과거 목포 부시장을 역임한 이 의원은 “통합의 절실함을 누구보다 잘 안다”며 “광주·전남이 통합하는 흐름 속에서 언젠가는 합치는 것이 반드시 필요하다”고 덧붙였다.
급격한 인구 감소에 따른 지역 소멸 위기에 대해서는 ‘양질의 일자리’를 핵심 해법으로 꼽았다. 이 의원은 목포 인구가 20년 사이 6만 명이나 감소한 점을 언급하며, 전남 해안의 해상풍력 잠재력을 활용한 경제 활성화 방안을 제시했다.
그는 “목포와 전남 해안은 원전 20기 분량에 달하는 22GW의 해상풍력 잠재력을 갖추고 있다”며 “이 전기를 지역에서 직접 소비하는 ‘RE100 산단’을 조성해 목포를 남부권 반도체 벨트의 중심축이자 에너지 산업의 모(母)도시로 부활시켜야 한다”고 역설했다.
현재 난항을 겪고 있는 전남권 의과대학 신설 문제와 관련해서는 ‘투 캠퍼스(Two-Campus) 체제’라는 구체적인 중재안을 내놓았다.
이 의원은 “목포대와 순천대의 통합 논의가 학생들의 반대에 부딪힌 상황에서 가장 현실적인 방법은 정원을 50대 50으로 나누는 것”이라며 “부속병원은 기존 의료 시설을 활용해 사업비를 줄이는 방식으로 돌파해야 한다”고 주장했다. 또한 “국회 보건복지위원으로서 정부로부터 2028년 개교 확답을 받아냈으며, 대통령의 추진 의지도 확고하다”고 설명했다.
