도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 8일(현지시간) 향후 중국의 대만 침공 가능성 관련해 "그(시진핑 중국 국가주석)가 그걸(대만 침공) 하면 매우 기분 나쁠 것이고, (시진핑은) 하지 않을 거라 생각하며 그러지 않길 희망한다”고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 공개된 미 'NYT(뉴욕타임스)' 인터뷰에서 "그(시진핑)는 대만이 중국 일부라 여기며 (대만에 대해) 뭣을 할지는 그가 결정할 일”이라며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 '최근 (베네수엘라) 상황을 틈탄 중국의 대만 공격·봉쇄 가능성' 질의엔 "우리가 다른 대통령을 갖게 된 이후 그렇게 할지도 모르나 내가 대통령으로 있는 동안 그렇게 할 거라 생각치 않는다”고 밝혔다. 중국이 베네수엘라 마두로 축출을 빌미로 대만 침공에 나서지 않을까 하는 우려를 일축한 것이다.
또 "베네수엘라가 미국에 실제적 위협이었고, 중국에 마약이 쏟아지진 않았다"며 "대만 감옥이 열려 중국으로 사람들이 쏟아져 들어가진 않았다”고 설명했다.
