브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 유럽연합(EU)에도 관세 부과를 시사한 것과 관련, EU집행부는 당황한 기색이 역력하면서도 실제로 부과된다면 단호히 대응하겠다는 입장을 내놨다.
AP통신에 따르면 2025년 유럽연합(EU) 의장국인 폴란드의 도날드 투스크 총리는 3일(현지 시간) 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 열린 비공식 EU 정상회의 후 기자들과 만난 자리에서 "동맹국간의 이런 갈등은 처음이기 때문에, 매우 이상한 맥락에서 심각한 도전"이라고 입장을 밝혔다.
투스크 총리는 "(동맹국 간에) 완전히 불필요하고 어리석은 관세 전쟁, 무역 전쟁을 피하기 위해 모든 것을 해야 한다"면서 "러시아의 직접적 위협과 중국의 확장이 있는 동안 EU와 미국이 동맹국간 갈등에 휘말린다면 잔혹한 역설이 될 것"이라고 우려를 쏟아냈다.
EU 행정부 수반인 우르줄라 폰데어라이엔 EU 집행위원장은 "EU와 미국의 유대는 평화, 안보, 번영을 증진하기 위해 중요하다"면서도 "EU는 스스로를 방어할 준비가 돼 있다. 불공정하거나 자의적으로 표적이 되면 단호히 대응할 것"이라고 강조했다.
EU의 외교 분야 수장인 카야 칼라스 외교안보 고위대표도 "무역전쟁에는 승자가 없다"며 "관세를 부과하면 비용이 증가해 서로 국민들에게 좋지 않을 것이다. 무역전쟁 옆에서 웃는 것은 중국일 것"이라고 했다.
