민주당이 처음에는 내란 선전죄를 운운하며 민주파출소를 운영하겠다고 하더니, 이재명 대표가 갑자기 "아버지가 담배 값 떼먹고 도망갔다느니, 어릴 때 이○○ 성폭행하고 감옥 갔다 왔다느니" 하는 식의 가짜뉴스를 카톡 검열을 통해 뿌리 뽑겠다고 공언하고 나섰다.
가짜뉴스 추방을 반대할 사람은 없다. 그러나 자신에 대한 가짜뉴스에 보복하기 위해 내란선전을 꺼내드는 것은 군사독재 시절 공안 사건을 때려잡던 방식과 꼭 닮아있다. 무엇이 가짜뉴스인지 명확히 제시하지도 못하고 있다.
여기저기 ‘내란’이라는 접두사를 마구잡이로 가져다 붙이며 공포 분위기를 조성하는 모습이 70여 년 전 매카시가 설쳤던 모습과 비슷하다. 6·25 시절 반동분자로 몰아 마구잡이로 처단했던 그때 그 시절로 되돌아간 착각이 든다.
윤석열 대통령 탄핵심판이 시작됐고, 관련자들은 전부 구속돼 재판을 받고 있다. 그런데도 여전히 '내란이 진행 중이다'라며 과장된 정치선동으로 불안을 부추기는 세력들이야말로 내란 주모자들이다.
민주사회의 기본 중의 기본인 표현의 자유를 내란 선전죄라는 공포 스러운 언어로 억누르려하는 수법은 스탈린이나 히틀러 같은 일극체제의 수법이다.
하지만 한 세기가 지난 구시대적 방식으로 표현의 자유를 탄압하려 하는 것은 시대착오적이며, 커다란 오산이다. 국민과 민심을 깔보는 낡은 방식은 오히려 거센 역풍의 철퇴를 맞게 될 것이다.
민주 파출소가 민주 파국소로 전락되어서는 안 된다. 이쯤에서 이재명 대표에게 잠재된 독재 리더십이 드러난 것이 차라리 다행이다.
