브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 최태원 SK 회장이 8일(현지 시간) 미국 라스베이거스에서 열린 CES를 찾아 전시관을 둘러보고 국내 언론과 간담회를 가졌다.
최 회장은 이 자리에서 젠슨 황 엔비디아 CEO와의 만남에서 이뤄진 사업 논의 내용을 언급하고 SK의 AI 사업 비전 등을 밝혔다.
최 회장은 황 CEO와의 만남에 대해 묻는 기자들의 질문에 “서로 만나 사업 관련한 여러 논의를 했다”며 “(기존에는)상대의 요구가 ‘더 빨리 개발을 해 달라’는 것이었는데 최근 SK하이닉스의 개발 속도를 선제적으로 높여 헤드투헤드(Head-to-Head)로 서로 빨리 만드는 것을 하고 있다”고 답했다.
이어 “(엔비디아가)컴퓨팅을 잘 이해해 컴퓨팅 관련 솔루션을 가장 효율적으로 찾아서 만드는 회사라는 것이 황 CEO의 생각이었고 실제로 그렇게 움직이고 있었다”고 설명했다.
아울러 3년 연속 CES를 찾은 데 대한 소감을 묻는 질문에는 “전부 AI화 되어가고 있다. 모든 것에 AI가 들어가기 시작했다는 것을 볼 수 있는 전시”라며 “속칭 피지컬 AI라고 하는 로봇이나 우리 주변 기기 안에 AI가 탑재되는 것이 일상화되고 상식화됐다는 것을 확인하는 자리였다”고 답했다.
최 회장은 SK의 AI 사업과 관련, 데이터 센터 사업 추진의 비전을 소개하기도 했다. 최 회장은 “(지금은)AI 반도체를 하고 있지만 새롭게 하고 있는 것은 AI데이터 센터 솔루션이 될 수 있는 모델을 찾는 것이며 AI 데이터 관련 비즈니스를 중점 추진 과제로 삼고 있다”고 말했다.
이어 대한민국이 AI산업 경쟁에서 뒤쳐져서는 안 된다는 점을 누차 강조하며 “AI는 이제 좋든 싫든 해야만 하는 것이고 이 경쟁에서 뒤쳐지면 반도체, 조선, 철강 등 그동안 우리가 자랑하던 모든 산업의 경쟁력이 위협 받을 것으로 보인다”며 “AI는 선택사항이 아니고 인터넷 환경이나 증기기관처럼 모든 분야에 걸쳐 전방위적 변화를 만들고 있는 산업이다. 가능하면 최전선에 서서 이 변화를 이끌어갈 것이냐 따라갈 것이냐에 따라 경제적 부침이 달려 있을 수 밖에 없다”고 강조했다.
최 회장은 대한민국의 AI산업 발전을 위한 제언도 덧붙였다. 최 회장은 “우리 스스로 어떤 형태로든 API(Application Programming Interface)를 개발해야 한다”며 ”제조업 관련 AI 라든지 로봇 관련한 AI라든지 특정 지역을 삼아 전략화 하든지 하기 위한 지원도 필요하다”고 말했다. AI 산업의 특화 없이 전반적인 성장을 추구하면 일개 기업이나 조직 단위 규모와 실력으로 세계 경쟁에서 이기기 어렵다는 것이다.
마지막으로 최 회장은 AI 인프라와 사람을 강조하면서 “교육을 통해 얼마나 많은 AI를 상시적으로 쓸 수 있는 사람이 되는지, AI를 만들고 연구하는 사람이 AI를 가지고 실험해 결과가 나오는 기본 환경이 만들어져야 한다”며 “다른 나라, 다른 곳에 전부 의존하게 되면 우리 스스로 미래를 개척하는 것은 상당히 어려워질 것이다. 우리가 필요한 건 스스로 만들어야지 남에게 영원히 의존할 수만은 없는 상황이 계속될 것이다”고 말했다.
