윤석열 대통령이 5일 김용현 국방장관 면직안을 재가하고 후임에 최병혁 주사우디아라비아 대사를 지명했다.
정진석 대통령 비서실장은 이날 오전 용산 대통령실 브리핑에서 이같은 인선안을 전했다.
정 비서실장은 신임 국방장관 후보자에 대해 "안보 전반에 넓은 식견을 갖췄을 뿐 아닌 야전 경험이 풍부한 작전 전문가"라며 "헌신적 자세로 임무를 완수하고 규정을 준수하는 원칙주의자"라고 소개했다.
그러면서 "국방 분야 풍부한 경험·높은 식견을 바탕으로 굳건한 한·미동맹에 기초해 확고한 대비 태세를 유지하는 등 군 본연 임무를 확실히 수행할 적임자라 판단했다"고 덧붙였다.
앞서 김 전 장관은 4일 "비상계엄과 관련한 모든 사태의 책임을 지겠다"며 사의를 표한 후입장문에서 “비상계엄 사무 관련해 임무를 수행한 전 장병들은 장관 지시에 따른 것으로 모든 책임은 본인에게 있다”고 했다.
