무함마드는 랍비나 기독교 사제들이 믿고 있는 경전에서 진리를 발견할 수 없음을 알았다. 무함마드는 당시 아라비아의 현자들이 그러했던 것처럼 일정 기간을 은거하면서 금욕과 기도로 보냈다. 40세가 된 무함마드는 그 동안의 풍족한 생활 속에서 만족을 찾을 수 없었고 절대 고독의 상태에서 열병을 크게 앓게 되었다. 그는 진리를 찾겠다는 일념으로 찾아간 곳이 히라 동굴이었다. 그곳에서의 고행이 무함마드에게 새로운 진리를 터득하는 계기가 되었다. 무함마드가 예언자로서 계시를 받은 히라(Hira) 동굴은 메카에서 북쪽으로 올라간 히라 산 정상에 있는 동굴이었다. 바람소리 외에는 아무것도 들리지 않는 그곳에서 그는 깊은 명상에 잠기곤 했다.

무함마드는 글을 읽을 수 없었지만 그렇다고 천사가 문자로 기록된 신의 계시서(戒詩序)를 가지고 온 것도 아니었다. 천사는 ‘읽어라’는 의미를 ‘암기와 학습을 통해 신을 발견하는 것’으로 무함마드에게 가르쳐주었다. 꾸란에 근본을 두고 있는 이슬람 종교에서는 믿음을 통해서 신을 발견하기보다는 신이 인간에게 부여한 능력으로 학습을 통해서 신을 발견하는 것이 더 합리적인 신앙관으로 권고하고 있다. 또한 신의 말씀을 암기하는 것도 신을 발견하는 지름길이며 어떤 매개체나 중재자가 필요 없이 신과 직접적으로 대화를 나눌 수 있는 유일한 수단이라고 가르친다. 유일신 알라의 이슬람교 경전인 꾸란은 예언자 무함마드에게 들려온 알라의 계시를 집대성한 것이다. 꾸란은 무함마드가 신의 계시를 받은 610년에서부터 632년 무함마드가 죽을 때까지 무함마드가 들은 알라의 음성을 기록한 것이며 이를 보충한 것들이 하디스(Hadith), 이즈마(Ijma)이다.

The story of the awakening of the Prophet Muhammad and the birth of Islam

Muhammad knew that he could not find the truth in the scriptures believed by rabbis and Christian priests. Like the sages of Arabia at the time, Muhammad spent a certain period of time in seclusion, practicing asceticism and prayer. When Muhammad turned 40, he could not find satisfaction in the affluent life he had lived during that time, and he suffered from a severe fever in a state of absolute loneliness. He went to the Hira Cave with the determination to find the truth. The asceticism there became an opportunity for Muhammad to learn new truths. The Hira Cave, where Muhammad received revelations as a prophet, was a cave on the top of Mount Hira, north of Mecca. There, where nothing could be heard except the sound of the wind, he would often fall into deep meditation.
For several years, Muhammad heard a voice as he practiced every year. In 610, Allah's first revelation came down, and Muhammad saw a vision while practicing extreme asceticism. It was the first call from Allah that Muhammad, exhausted from months of asceticism, fell into a deep sleep in a cave, when an angel appeared to him with a piece of paper in his hand and said to him, “Read.” Muhammad asked, “What do you want me to read?” and the angel embraced Muhammad and said, “Read.” Muhammad released himself and asked again, and the angel embraced him again and repeated, “Read.” Then the angel said,
“Read in the name of your Lord, who created all things.
He created man from a drop of blood.

Muhammad could not read, but the angel did not bring him a written book of divine revelations. The angel taught Muhammad that the meaning of ‘read’ is ‘discovering God through memorization and study.’ In the Islamic religion, which is based on the Quran, it is more reasonable to recommend discovering God through study with the ability that God has given to humans rather than discovering God through faith. Muhammad hurried home in a frightened state and asked his wife to cover him with a few sheets of cloth. On the sheets and the cloth were written several words: "Descended," "O clothed one! Arise and warn!” The voices were heard in many different forms, sometimes like the “reverberating of bells.” But soon they became one voice, the voice of the angel Jibril (or Gabriel). When heaven and earth were united and peace was achieved, humanity was on the threshold of a new dawn. Gabriel was the angel who conveyed the faith and truth given to Muhammad, the last of Allah’s prophets. In Islam, this night is called “Laylat al-Qadr,” the Night of Power. After hearing the voices of the angels in the cave of Hira, Muhammad did not even believe in the revelations for a while.
