“백두산의 푸른 정기 이 땅을 수호하고”로 시작되는 가사는 40여 년 전 ROTC 후보생 시절 처음 접했던 ‘나의 조국’이라는 군가의 첫 소절이다. 그 당시엔 군가 경연대회를 앞두고 군가를 암기하기에 급급해서인지 ‘백두산 푸른 정기’를 실감할 수 없었는데 이번 여행에서 광활한 천지를 접하고 나니 ‘눈앞에 가득했던 백두산의 푸른 정기’를 단번에 이해할 수 있었다.
백두산을 다녀온 주위 분들이 많은데, 천지를 보았느니 못보았느니가 백두산 여행의 Key word이고 천지를 본 이들은 “3대가 덕을 쌓았다”고 하는 등 오로지 천지에 모든 것이 집중된 기분이 든다.
지난 9월 추석연휴 후 3박4일 일정으로 지인 소개로 알게 된 분이 주선해준 여행팀에 올해 말로 폐기되는 모항공사 마일리지도 소진할 겸 합류해 생각지도 못했던 백두산과 연길 일대를 여행하게 되었다.
중국은 이전 회사에 근무할 때 업무적으로 상해 출장을 몇 번 가보았지만 여행으로 중국행 비행기에 몸을 싣는 건 처음이라 설렘이 가슴속에 가득했다.

‘한국어 간판’
연길공항에 도착해 아주 특이한 광경을 목격했는데 그것은 중국어와 한국어가 나란히 자연스레 표기된 모습들이었다. 물론 일본도 어느 공항에 가더라도 우리말로 간판이나 안내문구가 표기되어있는 것을 봤지만 연길은 공항을 빠져나와 시내로 들어가는 길목 건물마다 수많은 한국어 간판이 있는 게 아닌가!
가이드가 설명을 해줬다. 예전에는 중국어가 대부분이었으나 우리 중국동포들이 부단히 요청을 하여 중국어와 한국어가 나란히 표기될 수 있었노라고. 하여튼 우리 한글이 중국이라는 외국에서 당당히 쓰이고 있는 것을 보니 기분은 뿌듯하고 이를 이룬 연변 동포들도 대견한 생각이 든다.

‘백두산 천지’
아침 일찍 식사 후 버스를 타고 백두산을 향했다.
가이드 왈 “중국인들의 생활수준이 오르고 코로나 이후엔 백두산 관광의 수요가 폭증해서 많은 사람들이 승용차로 찾아오고 있습니다. 이 때문에 교통체증이 빚어져 백두산에 쉽게 오를 수가 없을 정도가 되었습니다.”
이에 대한 방편으로 곳곳에 2~3개소의 일종의 버스환승 장소를 마련하고 이곳에 승용차를 주차 후 셔틀버스를 타고 백두산과 장백폭포 등을 방문하게 만들었다고 한다. 물론 우리들도 타고 온 버스에서 내려 길게 선 줄을 통과하여 셔틀버스를 세 번이나 갈아타고 비로소 꿈에도 그리던 백두산에 올랐다.
백두산을 오르는 마지막 셔틀에서 내려서 천지까지는 약 200미터 정도를 줄지어서 오르니 코발트색의 천지가 나의 입을 순간적으로 벌리게 하고 다물 줄을 모르게 한다. 왔노라! 보았노라! 느꼈노라! 백두산의 푸른정기를,,.
천지를 볼수 있는 곳은 동서남북의 네 곳이라고 한다. 우리가 올라간 곳은 북쪽으로 통상 북파라고 하였다. 천지의 푸른 물과 규모에 정신이 없는 사이 나머지 세 곳을 보았다. 이중 북·남·서파는 중국지역이고 오로지 동파만이 북한 지역이라고 한다. 뭔가 참 찜찜한 기분이 들었다. 동파를 보니 몇 년 전 문재인 전 대통령이 방문했던 곳이라고 한다. 어쨌거나 잘 되었으면 오늘날 나도 중국땅이 아닌 한반도인 동파에 가서 천지를 감상하고 있었을지도 모를 일이다, ‘피식’ 웃음이 나온다.

‘장백폭포’
천지의 웅장함으로 인해 가슴이 벌렁벌렁한 상태로 또 다시 셔틀버스 두번을 환승하고 우리는 장백폭포 앞에 내렸다. 여행오기 전 유튜브를 보니 장백폭포 입구에 온천으로 삶은 달걀을 판다기에 일행들과 온천수로 삶은 달걀을 사먹었다. 달걀 맛은 거기가 거기지만 백두산 천지에 나온 온천수로 삶았다고 생각하니 한결 색다른 맛이 난다. 장백폭포로 가는 길, 유황온천수가 곳곳에서 흘러나오는 온천지역을 뒤로 하고 드디어 폭포를 눈앞에 마주하니 “와아”하는 함성이 나오는 동시에 북한 지역에도 장백폭포 못지않는 백두폭포 등이 있다고 들었는데 그 곳에 가면 어떤 느낌일까 하는 생각도 들었다.
‘도문’
북한과 마주하고 있는 도문시. 여러 경로를 통해 도문시와 북한지역에 대해 들은 것에 비해 직접 와보니 정말로 가깝다는 느낌이었다. 그렇지만 최근엔 북한과 중국의 국경이 155마일 휴전선처럼 철조망이 쳐져 있었다. 다행이 중국국경에서는 관광보트를 타고 두만강을 두루 올라 북한지역을 가까이 가볼 수 있다고 하는데 남북국면의 경색화로 중국인만 가능하고 우리 국민은 불가능하다고 한다. 내 고향 강화도에서도 북한 황해도 땅이 한눈에 보이지만 도문은 소리지르면 들릴 수 있는 거리인데도 고향이 북한 땅인 분들은 이곳에 와서 어떤 기분일까? 이런 저런 생각 속에 야속한 두만강은 말없이 흐르고 있다.

‘명동촌’
뭔가 섬뜻한 표현에 놀랐다! “중국 조선족 민족시인 윤동주”라니. 아니, 우리 대한민국 정부에서는 뭐를 했나? 일제치하에서 고향을 떠나 독립운동을 하거나 독립군에 도움을 준 수많은 분들한테 조금의 자책감도 못 느끼는 걸까? 잠시 안타까움으로 울분이 터져 나온다. 명동촌에 들러 윤동주시인 외할아버지가 설립한 명동학교를 들러보니 그 당시 그리운 고향을 떠나 만주벌판에 자리를 잡고 민족혼을 담은 교육을 위해 명동학교를 세운 선각자였음을 다시금 생각게 한다. 민족시인 윤동주의 시비를 보면서 중국조선족이 아닌 “대한민국 민족시인 윤동주 ”로 표기된 이정표를 볼 날을 고대한다.
