윤석열 대통령이 28일 국내 최초 자연임신으로 생긴 다섯 쌍둥이가 입원 중인 병원을 찾아 이른둥이 출산·치료·양육 등 관련 의견을 청취하고 "이른둥이(미숙아)에 대한 맞춤형 지원을 더욱 확대하고 부모님 의료비 부담을 완화할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
앞서 경기 동두천 거주 30대 교육공무원 부부는 지난 9월 20일 다섯쌍둥이를 출산한 가운데 이는 세계적으로도 드문 것으로 자연 임신에 다른 다섯 쌍둥이 탄생은 국내 첫 사례다.
윤 대통령은 엄마·아기가 안심하고 치료받을 수 있도록 출산·치료·양육 전 과정 '토털 서비스'를 정부가 제공하고, 의료진이 안정적으로 이른둥이 등 고위험 치료에 나설 수 있도록 보상을 강화하겠다고 했다.

윤 대통령은 "이른둥이는 수개월 간 인큐베이터서 여러 합병증 치료를 받는 경우가 많아 (부모) 부담이 많다"며 "현재 최대 1000만 원까지 지원되는 의료비 지원 한도를 대폭 상향해 의료비 부담을 완화할 것"이라고 했다.
또 퇴원 후 관리 지원 강화 부분도 언급 후 "힘든 일하는 의료진에 대한 지원을 강화하겠다"며 의료진을 격려했다.
그러면서 "이른둥이를 비롯 신생아·고위험 사고 집중 치료에 대해선 보상을 아주 강화하겠다"며 "고난도 의료 행위에 대해 수가를 인상해 의료진에도 힘을 실어드릴 것이고, 이런 문제를 근본 개선키 위한 의료 개혁에도 더욱 박차를 가할 것"이라고 강조했다.
현재 서울·부산 등 6개 광역 지자체에서 전문코디네이터가 이른둥이 건강 상태·발달 과정을 계속 확인하고 의료진과의 상담 치료를 연계해 주는 지속 관리 서비스가 제공되고 있는 가운데 내년부터 전국 17개 광역단체로 확대할 방침이다.
또 현재 출생일 기준으로 돼 있는 건강보험 본인 부담 경감·방문 건강관리 지원 기한은 출산 예정일 또는 퇴원 시점 기준으로 조정해 필요한 지원을 적기에 받을 수 있도록 개선한다.
