기독교의 성서 지상주의나 유태교의 경전 정통주의 그리고 이슬람의 꾸란 숭배주의 모두 인류문명사적인 관점에서 볼 때 해악이 많은 사상이라는 것은 나도 동의하는 바이다. 다만 어느 한 종교에 포비아적 발상은 옳지 못하다는 것이다.
가장 큰 문제는 이를 정치에 활용하는 자들이 문제이다. IS, 알카에다, 보코하람, 와하비즘, 하마스의 문제는 경전 중심에 있다. 종교를 인문학으로 공부한 분들은 잘 아실 것이다. 경전에는 직설적인 것을 말하는 것도 있지만 은유적인 부분, 그리고 은닉적이면서 뭔가 비유적인 부분으로 돌려서 비판하는 부분, 그리고 그 안에 숨겨진 어떠한 암호적 진리 같은 것 등 다양하다.
문제는 그걸 모두 직설적이고 사실적으로 받아들인다는 것에 있다. 예를 들어 예수가 물을 포도주로 만드는 기적을 보였는데, 이걸 문자 그대로 읽으면 실제로 그가 포도주로 만들었다는게 된다. 그러나 현실적으로는 말도 안 되는 얘기다. 여기에서 가장 중요한 것은 신에 대한 충만한 믿음으로, 혹은 그가 신의 아들이거나 신 그 자체였을 경우니까 가능하다는 것이다. 그보다 더한 지옥 같은 현실적인 얘기도 전부 신의 뜻을 곡해하거나 아니면 글자로 그대로 받아들인다는 것이 문제가 있다.
세월은 진화하고 경전을 해석하는 것도 시간이 지나면서 그 트랜드에 맞춰 바뀌게 되어 있다. 이슬람의 수니파도 시아파도 7세기 때와 달리 많은 부분에서 바꼈고 수많은 이슬람 종파들도 시대의 흐름에 따라 트랜드가 변해가고 있다. 그게 세속주의의 참 발상이라 볼 수 있는데 문제는 그런 이슬람 교리를 이용하는 자에게 있다. 정치적인 특성과 사회적인 특성상 이를 이용해 자기에게 유리한 것만 갖다 쓰는 것이다. 성경이나 꾸란, 토라에 나와 있는 문자 그대로 해석해도 저러지는 않는다.
그럼 무엇이 문제일까? 지도자들이 자기 입맛에 따라 경전의 원뜻을 곡해하고 해석한다는 것에 있다. 그리고 여기에 정치와 연결시키려 한다. 이게 원리주의이다. 근본주의는 말 그대로 경전애 나와 있는 문구 그대로 가자는 것에 있다. 원리주의와 근본주의의 차이는 여기에 있다. 그 중에서 가장 위험한게 원리주의이다. IS, 알카에다, 보코하람, 하마스가 여기에 속한다. 와하비즘이나 탈레반은 근본주의에 속한다.
근본주의는 차라리 덜 위험하다. 자신들의 목적만 달성하면 거기까지인게 근본주의이다. 사우디의 와하비즘이나 탈레반이 더 이상 테러했다는 얘기는 없다. 사우드 가문이 아라비아를 통치하고 탈레반이 아프가니스탄을 통제하자마자 테러는 더 이상 일어나지 않고 있다. 그 대신 철저하게 교리 중심주의로 가는 것이다. 이와 같은 경우, 타인에게 끼치는 해악은 없다. 다만 원리주의는 타인, 특히 비종교인들에게 해를 끼친다. lukybaby7@gmail.com

Scriptures include things that are straightforward, but there are also metaphorical parts, parts that are hidden and criticized by turning them into metaphorical parts, and some kind of cryptic truth hidden within them.
