미술평론가 김종근씨가 고흐가 태어난 네덜란드 고향에서 마지막자살한 오베르 쉬르 와즈까지 그의 발자취를 따라 30여회로 연재를 시작한다. (편집자 주).
2006년 지금으로부터 18년 전. 나는 반 고흐가 태어난 네덜란드 고향 준데르트에서 마지막 프랑스 근교의 오베르 쉬르 와즈의 무덤까지 여행을 시작했었다.
그가 탄생한 네덜란드 고향을 시작으로 그림을 그리며 옮겨 다닌 집과 아틀리에, 헤이그, 암스테르담, 벨기에 보리나쥬의 탄광촌, 그가 고갱과 머물렀던 별이 빛나던 밤의 남 프랑스의 아를르, 셍 레미드 프로방스, 그가 입원했던 병원까지.
그리고 마지막 그가 권총으로 자살한 까마귀가 나는 밀밭이 있는 오베르 쉬르와즈 ,고흐 형제의 무덤까지가 답사의 마지막 3주간의 일정이었다.
그러면서 암스테르담의 고흐미술관은 물론 그의 작품이 70여 점이 소장된 크롤러 뮐러 미술관도 방문했다.
렌터카와 기차와 TGV로 약 20여 일에 걸쳐 그가 그림을 그렸던 곳들과 살았던 아틀리에를 둘러보고 난 고흐를 새롭게 보고 발견했다.

그가 살아온 진지한 삶과 뜨거움, 그 모든 흔적이 편지와 그림 속에 그리고 그가 그렸던 현장, 현장에서 생생하게 묻어났다.
수없이 시작하고 오랜 시간이 지났지만, 이제 그를 다시 회상하고 추억하기로 했다.
언제 끝날지 나는 아직 모른다. 그 이후에도 나는 프랑스 파리 오르세이 미술관의 특별전은 말할 것도 없이, 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄, 런던 내셔널 갤러리, 일본 국립 서양미술관 등에서 난 거의 그의 작품을 보았다.
그의 모든 편지가 수록된 도록도, 화집도 거의 구입 소장하고 있다.
나는 다만 고흐의 아름다운 예술가의 영혼이 내가 글을 쓰는 동안 함께 했으면 좋겠다는 간절하고 소박한 희망 외에는 없다. 굿 모닝, 반 고흐.

Art critic Kim Jong-geun begins a 30-part series following Van Gogh's footsteps from his birthplace in the Netherlands to his final suicide in Auvers-sur-Oise. (Editor's note).
18 years ago in 2006, I started my journey from Zundert, the Dutch hometown where Van Gogh was born, to the grave in Auvers-sur-Oise, the last suburb of France.
Starting from his Dutch hometown where he was born, I visited the houses and studios he moved around while painting, The Hague, Amsterdam, the mining towns of the Borinage in Belgium, Arles in southern France where he stayed with Gauguin on a starry night, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and the hospital where he was hospitalized.
And finally, Auvers-sur-Oise, where he committed suicide with a pistol and where crows fly, and the graves of the Van Gogh brothers were the last three weeks of the tour.
In the meantime, I visited the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam as well as the Kroller-Müller Museum, which houses over 70 of his works.
After spending about 20 days in a rental car, train, and TGV, I looked around the places where he painted and the studio where he lived, and discovered Van Gogh in a new way.
His serious life and passion, all traces of them were vividly embedded in his letters and paintings, and in the places where he painted.
I have started countless times and a long time has passed, but now I have decided to recall and remember him again.
I still don’t know when it will end. Since then, I have seen almost all of his works, not to mention the special exhibition at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, France, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery in London, and the National Museum of Western Art in Japan.
I have almost all of his letters and art books that contain them.
I only have one earnest and humble hope, that Van Gogh’s beautiful artist’s soul will be with me as I write. Good morning, Van Gogh.
