자칭 보수우파라는 사람들이 나에게 DM을 보내왔다. 나를 진정한 보수우파로 인정할 수 없다는 것이다. 그 이유는 윤석열 대통령을 비판해서라고 한다. 윤석열 대통령을 옹호하면 보수우파고 비판(Critique)하면 보수가 아닌가? 당신들에게 있어 진정한 보수우파의 가치는 무엇인가? 내가 보기에는 그 가치가 내 편이 아니면 무조건 빨갱이라는 이분법 사고에 있다. 진정한 보수의 가치는 비판의 수용(Acceptance of critique)에 있다. 그러나 많은 보수우파는 이러한 비판을 수용하지 않는다. 오로지 비난(Blame)과 비방(Slander)으로 받아들일 뿐이다.
보수의 성지(聖地)인 영국의 보수연합당(Conservative and Unionist Party)을 보면 그 보수적 행동과 가치의 원천이 토리당에서 비롯되고 있다. 이 보수연합당은 무조건 마그나카르타(Great Charter of Freedoms) 대헌장의 원칙을 준수하고 그 원칙에 입각한 시대의 흐름에 따른 점진적인 개혁을 추구하는 당으로 유명하다. 즉 이는 절대적인 폐쇄성의 논리인 수구주의에 기대지 않고 일부 신(新) 자유주의 체제를 받아들이면서 내부의 진보를 거듭한 것이다. 영국의 보수연합당은 한국의 국민의 힘 정당과는 차원이 다른 보수다. 그리고 우리가 말하는 중도 보수, 중도 우파가 이런 보수연합당 같은 형태의 정당을 말하는 것이고 그들이 가지고 있는 성향 및 속성을 말하는 것이다.
이러한 보수연합당의 명제는 전통적으로 원칙(Principle), 책임(Responsibility), 명예(Honour)로 나타난다. 이 3대 명제가 800년을 이어온 영국 보수의 심장이라 말할 수 있다. 3대 명제에서 중시하는데 흔히 우리가 말하는 명예(Honour)는 몽테스키외가 주장하는 『법의 정신(The Spirit of Law)』의 표본으로 등장한 군주제 원리인 명예(Ehre)와는 차원이 다른 원칙과 명제이기 때문에 이를 잘 구분해야 한다. 나는 솔직히 대한민국의 자칭 보수라고 주장하는 사람들에게 그들이 가지고 있는 최대의 프라이드이자 가치인 원칙(Principle), 책임(Responsibility), 명예(Honour) 3개의 명제 중 무엇을 갖추었는지 묻고 싶어진다. 특히 윤석열 대통령은 이 3대 명제 중 무엇을 갖추었는지도 궁금하다.
원칙없는 보수는 진보보다도 못하며 책임 없는 보수는 원칙을 지킬 수 없게 된다. 명예 없는 보수는 보수로써의 가치가 없다. 보수가 보수로써의 가치와 프라이드가 없다면 존재의 이유 또한 없다. 그러면 나한테 페메를 보낸 자칭 보수라 부르는 당신들은 보수가 가지는 프라이드와 생명력이 무엇이라 보는가? 나는 그것을 비판(Critique)으로 인한 채찍으로 설정했다. 현재 국제 사회는 급변하고 있고 양대 체제가 다시 생겨나고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 국제 정세와 외교적인 부분, 국익을 위한 경제적 실익에 대해서는 아직 명확한 플렌을 보지 못했다. 윤석열 정부가 취임한지 6개월이 지났는데 아직까지 이런 명확한 플렌이 없다는 것은 심각한 문제가 아닌가?
명확한 플렌이 없으니 "북한이 비핵화에 나선다면 '담대한 구상'에 따라 전폭적 지원을 제공할 것"라는 말이 나오는 것이다. 예를 들어 어제 했던 발언 중에 "북한이 대륙간 탄도미사일을 재차 발사하거나 핵실험을 감행한다면 국제사회가 단호하게 대응해야 한다"고 했다. 현재 돌아가는 국제 정세를 모르니 이와 같은 발언을 하는 것이다. 아마 북한이 이번 달 안에 미사일을 계속 쏘았는데도 국제 사회가 전혀 대응하지 않았다는 사실조차 모르는듯 하다. 날마다 어찌 변하는지 알 수 없고 늘 관계와 관계가 충돌하며 급변하는 국제 정세에 이 정도의 식견이라면 그에 대한 호된 비판은 당연한 것이다. 그런 상황에서 무슨 뜬금없이 보수우파가 맞느냐 아니냐 등의 사상 검증도 아니고 왜 그런 얘기가 나오는지 전혀 이해가 안 된다.
중국에 과거부터 수많은 명군과 명재상들이 있었다. 나는 그 중에서 대당제국(大唐帝國)을 가장 높이 평가하는 사람이다. 중국 최고의 명군이자 당나라 최고의 명군인 태종(太宗, 598~ 649, 재위 : 627~649)은 정관의 치(貞觀之治)를 통해 중국 역사상 가장 번영했던 시대를 일구었다. 이러한 당 태종이 중국에서 최고 명군으로 칭송받고 당나라가 당시 세계적인 대제국이 되었던 이유는 그의 곁에 위징(魏徵, 580~643)이 있었기 때문이다. 위징은 황제의 비위를 거스르면서 직언을 서슴지 않았다. 태종의 자그만한 실수에 대해서도 호된 질책과 꾸지람, 그에 대한 강도 높은 비판을 마다하지 않았다. 그에 대한 일화로 방상수라는 옛 신하가 뇌물을 받은 것이 드러났는데도 옛정을 생각해서 죄를 용서하고 비단을 100필이나 보내 선처하자 위징은 바로 직언했다.
"상을 내릴 때는 관계가 소원한 사람도 잊지 말아야 하고, 징벌을 내릴 때는 측근과 귀족들에 대한 정리를 염두에 두지 말아야 합니다. 모든 상벌은 공정과 인정을 원칙으로 해야 사람들을 설복할 수 있습니다."
태종은 자신의 처사를 철회할 수밖에 없었다. 어느 날 태종은 위징에게 물었다.
"어떻게 하면 명군이 되고 어떻게 하면 암군이 되는가?"
그러자 위징은
"널리 신하의 의견을 물으면 명군이 되고, 일부 사람들의 말만 믿으면 암군이 된다고 생각합니다. 명군의 예로는 요순을 들 수 있고, 암군의 예는 진시황, 양 무제, 수 양제 등입니다."
위징의 직언은 유명하다. 그는 늘상 직언으로 태종의 심기를 건드렸다. 다음과 같은 일화가 전해 온다. 어느 날 태종이 또 위징의 직언을 듣고 화가 나서 내전에 들어와 이렇게 외쳤다.
"또 조정에서 나를 모욕했으니 저놈의 영감놈을 오늘은 꼭 죽이고야 말겠다."
그러나 장손황후가 갑자기 사라지더니 잠시 뒤 황후의 정장으로 갈아입고 나와서 태종에게 큰 절을 하며 말했다.
"감축드립니다. 자고로 명군 밑에는 바른 말하는 신하가 있다고 들었습니다. 위징 같은 신하가 있다는 것은 폐하가 명군이라는 뜻이 아니겠습니까?"
태종은 기분이 좋아져 없던 일로 했다 한다. 당나라가 세계 제국이 되고 당 태종이 명군의 반열에 오르내리는 것은 위징이라는 신하의 비판과 채찍, 호된 야단과 꾸짖음을 겸허히 수용했기 때문이다. 그런데 지금의 청와대, 윤석열 대통령의 주변에는 이러한 위징과 같은 인물이 없다. 보면 그를 감싸는 보수우파부터 하나 같이 Yes Man들이다. 하물며 일개 회사에도 Yes Man들만 있으면 망하는 회사다. 일개 회사라도 그런데 국가도 마찬가지다. Yes Man들만 있으면 국정 운영도 어렵고 이는 망하는 길이다. 이에 대한 정당한 비판은 차단해버리고 오로지 자기 편, Yes Man의 말만 절대적으로 신뢰한다. 비판의 수용(Acceptance of critique)이라고는 전혀 없는데 여기에 무슨 희망이 있겠는가? 나보고 진정한 보수우파가 아니라고 했는가? 진정한 보수우파의 가치는 원칙(Principle)과 책임(Responsibility), 명예(Honour)에 입각하여 이에 어긋날 경우, 혹독한 비판이 수반되어진다는 것을 명심하길 바란다. 그것이 대한민국과 보수의 존재 가치, 윤석열 대통령 모두를 지키는 일이다.

People who call themselves conservatives sent me DMs. They said they could not recognize me as a true conservative. They said it was because I criticized President Yoon Seok-yeol. If you support President Yoon Seok-yeol, you are a conservative, and if you criticize him, you are not a conservative. What is the true value of conservatives to you? In my view, the value lies in the dichotomous thinking that if someone is not on my side, they are definitely a communist. The true value of conservatism lies in the acceptance of criticism. However, many conservatives do not accept such criticism. They only accept it as blame and slander.
If you look at the Conservative and Unionist Party in the UK, the holy land of conservatism, you can see that its conservative actions and values originate from the Tory Party. This Conservative Union Party is famous for unconditionally adhering to the principles of the Great Charter of Freedoms and pursuing gradual reforms in accordance with the flow of the times based on those principles. In other words, it is a party that has made internal progress while accepting some new liberal systems without relying on the logic of absolute isolationism. The Conservative Union Party in the UK is a conservative party of a different level from the People Power Party in Korea. In such a situation, I don’t understand why such a story is being brought up, not even a ideological examination of whether or not the conservatives are right.
China has had many great kings and ministers since ancient times. Among them, I highly regard the Tang Empire (大唐帝國). The greatest king in China and the greatest king of the Tang Dynasty, Taizong (太宗, 598–649, reign: 627–649), created the most prosperous era in Chinese history through the reign of Zhenguan (貞觀之治). The reason why Taizong was praised as the greatest king in China and the Tang Dynasty became the world’s greatest empire at the time was because he had Wei Zheng (魏徵, 580–643) by his side. Taejong was so happy that he pretended it never happened. The Tang Dynasty became a world empire, and Emperor Taizong of Tang was able to rise to the ranks of wise rulers because he humbly accepted the criticism, whip, harsh scolding, and reprimand of a minister named Wei Zheng. However, there is no one like Wei Zheng in the current Blue House or around President Yoon Seok-yeol. If you look, even the conservatives who protect him are all Yes Men.
