필자는 지난 1987년 서울역 인근에 신문사(주간현대) 사무실을 오픈, 27년째 서울역 부근에서 활동해왔다. 필자에게 있어, 서울역은 기다림의 역이다. 남북한이 자유로이 소통(疏通)되는 순간을 대망(待望)해왔다.
우리나라 첫 철도는 경인선(1900년, 광무 4년 개설)이다. 그 이후 경성역(1925년, 일제 강점기 하 이름)-서울역(1946년, 우리 국가가 붙인 이름)으로 개명돼, 한반도의 중심역 역할을 해왔었다.

우리나라 첫 철로는 서울과 인천을 연결하는 철로로 시작했다. 철로역사, 124년이 흘렀다. 서울-평양 간 철도는 일제 강점기 때인 1925년에 연결됐다. 당시 조선 총독부는 “경성역을 도쿄역과 비슷한 규모로 세워 일본 제국의 위세를 선전하려 했다”고 한다. 그러나 그 규모는 일본 도쿄역과 비슷한 외모-크기로 지으려 했으나, 그 크기는 4분의1 정도였다고 한다.

그럼에도 불구하고 서울역은 북한의 평양역과 함께 한반도를 연결하는 종심역(縱深驛)이었다. 일제의 의도는, 대륙으로 진출하기 위한 군인-군수물자의 운송수단이었다. 그러하기에 대륙 지향적인 철로라 할 수 있다. 남북이 통일되면, 서울역-평양역은 당연하게 한민족의 대륙진출 핵심 역(核心 驛) 역할을 하게 될 것이다.
트럼프 미 대통령 당선자는 지난 2024년 7월18일 미국 공화당 전당대회 대통령 후보 수락연설에서 "많은 핵무기를 가지고 있는 누군가(북한 감정은)와 잘 지내는 것은 좋은 일이다. 우리가 재집권하면, 나(트럼프)는 그(김정은)와 잘 지낼 것이다"고 천명했다.
이 말을 신뢰한다면, 머지않아 미국과 북한의 외교 정상화(미-북 외교관계 수립), 즉 평양에 주 미 대사관-워싱턴에 주 북한 대사관을 설치하는 우방국가 체제로 이전할 수 있게 될 것이다. 이렇게 되면, 남북한 국민-인민들의 상호방문, 북일 외교정상화 등의 변화가 뒤따르리라. 이런 시기가 오게 되면, 서울역은 한국의 중앙역에서 글로벌 역으로 승격될 것이다.
