시간은 흐른다. 민주주의의 거인(巨人) 김영삼 전 대통령이 서거한지 벌써 9주년이다. 11월22일, 그 추모식에 다녀왔다.
시대마다 소명이 있기 마련이다.
구한말에는 개화, 일제암흑기에는 독립, 해방공간에서는 건국, 60~70년대에는 탈후진을 위한 산업화, 80~90년대에는 탈권위주의를 위한 민주화, 이것이 시대가 요구하는 소명이었다.
이승만은 건국의 소명을, 박정희는 산업화의 소명을 성공적으로 받들었다. 그리고 거산 김영삼은 민주화의 소명을 완수했다.
대통령이 된 거산은 불꽃같은 투지로 개혁의 칼을 휘둘렀다. 역사를 바로 세우고 민주주의의 확고한 토대를 구축했다. 기득권세력의 부패를 청산하기 위해 금융실명제, 공직자재산공개등 과감한 개혁을 단행했다.
이런 질풍노도 같은 개혁으로 오늘 대한민국은 불가역적 민주주의 시대를 열고 부패의 함정에 빠질 위험을 벗어나게 되었다. 거산(김영삼 전 대통령)의 삶은 그의 자서전 책 제목처럼 민주주의를 위한 투쟁과 헌신 그 자체였다.
그러나 그(민주주의의 거인 김영삼 전 대통령)의 정치적 유산은 아직도 어둠 속에 갇혀있다. 낡은 이념세력의 공격과 투쟁을 잊은 보수 세력의 비겁함 때문이다. 그러나 시간은 위대한 힘을 발휘한다. 그의 개혁과 헌신에 대한 정당한 평가가 머지않아 빛을 발할 순간이 올 것을 믿는다.
