무더웠던 여름이 완전히 가시지 않은 10월 중순의 주말에 필자는 음악회의 초대장을 받았다. 초대장을 보낸 단체는 창단한 지 49주년을 맞는 서울싱잉커플즈였다. 매년 가을에 나의 귀를 즐겁게 해 주었고 필자는 창립은 49년이 되었고 43회를 맞는 정기연주회였다. 이 단체와의 인연은 초등학교 동창인 이종엽 군 때문이었지만 멤버 중에는 대학원 동창인 정재웅 군도 있었기에 특별히 애정이 가게 되었다. 필자는 10여년 전부터 매년 참석을 해왔는데 이 날은 더욱 발전된 합창단의 모습을 보게 된 것같다.
우리나라에 많은 합창단체가 있지만 부부합창단은 거의 보지 못했던 것 같다. 이 단체는 부부로 구성된 합창단체로는 유일한 사단법인이 아닐까 하는 생각이다. 서울싱잉커플즈 단원들은 음악을 전공하지 않은 순수 아마츄어 출신들이 대부분이고 이중 일부는 실력이 현저한 음악 전공자들도 있는 듯했다. 특히 조익현 지휘자는 널리 알려진 분이고 최은미 반주자도 경력이 풍부한 반주자였다. 특별히 초대된 모듬북의 최영진 무형문화제 판소리고법 전수자의 북소리는 관객의 탄성을 이끌어냈다. 특히 최영진 전수자와 정유나 팀파니 연주자의 국악과 양악의 조화로움이 관객들에게 감동을 선사했다.
지난 10년간의 공연을 보면서 느낀 점은 단원들의 실력이 엄청난 발전을 이룬 것 같다. 음악을 소화하는 깊이가 해가 갈수록 달라지고 있음을 느꼈다. 특히 이번 공연에서는 라퓨즈 필하모닉 오케스트라와 협연을 함으로써 음악회의 수준을 한층 더 높였던 것이다. 이날 이들이 선 보인 작품 중에 “평화로운 세상을 그리며” 라는 부제속에 Karl Jenkins의 2000년도에 작곡한 “The Armed Man”과 “평화를 위한 미사”를 합창했다. “무장한 군인”은 종교와 민족 간의 갈등으로 일어난 보스니아 내전이 끝난 직후 이슬람교도가 주류인 코소보 지역에서 분리독립을 요구한 50만명의 코소보 주만들이 세르비아계로부터 대학살을 당하거나 추방당한 사건이다. 이들 희생자에 대한 추모의 음악을 영국 왕립무기박물관의 제안을 받고 칼 젠킨스가 총 13곡의 미사곡을 작곡했는데 .”The .Armed Man”은 찻 번 째와 열두 번 째의 타이틀 곡이다.
전쟁의 위험으로 빠져드는 과정과 후회의 순간들, 전쟁의 참혹함이 음악에 내포되어 있었다. 평화를 위한 미사곡에는 “주여 자비를 베푸소서” 라는 테마곡과 주의 영광과 찬미와 평화를 위한 갈구가 각 장마다 표현되고 있다, 총 13곡의 작품 중에 서울싱잉커플즈에서는 7곡을 연주했다. 이들의 진지함과 열정은 음악을 웅장한 서사시로 표현하며 청중을 감동시켰다, 필자는 공연을 보면서 이런 곡을 아마츄아 합창단이 결코 완성할 수 없을 것이라는 생각을 했다. 그런데 이들은 관객에게 감동을 주며 완성했다.

또 하나의 감동곡이 있었다. 우효원 작곡가의 역작인 “아 대한민국”은 총 4악장으로 4괘를 뜻하는 “건” “곤” “감” “리” 로 이루어진 곡은 최영진 고수의 북소리와 하나가 되는 가슴이 뭉클한 연주였다. 함께한 친구도 연주에 감탄하는 모습이었다. 참석했던 청중들은 대부분이 합창단원의 가족들이나 지인들이었을 것인데 그들의 연주에 환호하고 진심의 박수를 보내고 있었다. 여의도 KBS 콘써트홀을 합창단과 청중들의 열기로 가득 찬 가을 밤의 축제였다. 1년에 한차례의 관객을 만나기 위해서 이들이 얼마나 많은 열정과 노고를 쏟았는지 생각하면 부부합창단에 존경심이 들 정도였다. 앞으로도 서울싱잉켜플즈 단원들을 응원하며 훌륭한 연주를 기대한다.

Seoul Singing Couples’ 49th Anniversary Regular Concert
On a weekend in mid-October when the hot summer had not yet completely subsided, I received an invitation to a concert. The group that sent the invitation was Seoul Singing Couples, which was celebrating its 49th anniversary. Every fall, they delighted my ears, and this was the 43rd regular concert since their founding. My connection with this group was due to my elementary school classmate Lee Jong-yeop, but I also had a special affection for them because one of their members was my graduate school classmate Jeong Jae-woong. I have been attending every year for the past 10 years, but on this day, I felt like I saw a more developed choir.
There are many choir groups in Korea, but I have rarely seen a couples’ choir. I think this group is the only corporate choir group comprised of couples. Most of the members of Seoul Singing Couples are pure amateurs who did not major in music, but some of them seem to be music majors with outstanding skills. In particular, conductor Cho Ik-hyun is widely known, and accompanist Choi Eun-mi is also an experienced accompanist. The drum sound of Choi Young-jin, a specially invited intangible cultural heritage pansori master, drew cheers from the audience. In particular, the harmony of Korean traditional music and Western music by Choi Young-jin and timpani player Jeong Yu-na impressed the audience.
Watching the performances over the past 10 years, I felt that the members’ skills have improved tremendously. I felt that the depth of their ability to digest music has changed year by year. Most of the audience members who attended were probably the choir members' families or acquaintances, cheering and applauding their performance. The KBS Concert Hall in Yeouido was a festival on an autumn night filled with the passion of the choir and the audience. Thinking about how much passion and effort they put into meeting the audience once a year, I felt respect for the couple's choir. I will continue to support the Seoul Singing Couples members and look forward to their excellent performances.
