브레이크뉴스 노보림 기자= 작품은 작가를 닮는다는 말이 있다. 어찌보면 창작자의 생각이나 작업 환경은 그대로 작품에 투영될 수 밖에 없다. 때문에 작품을 들여다 보기 이전에, 작가를 먼저 들여다 보면 그 작품을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있다. 이에 브레이크뉴스는 국내 작가들과의 릴레이 인터뷰를 통해 작가의 작품은 물론, 삶의 이야기를 들어보는 시간을 가지려고 한다. <편집자 주>
-작품을 그릴 때 주로 어디에서 영감을 받나.
전시회에서 받은 감동이나 책 속의 한 구절처럼 외부적 요인에서 영감을 받기도 하지만 대부분은 일상 속 순간순간 떠오르는 개인적인 감정들이 작업의 원천이 된다. 때로는 이런 감정들을 작품으로 구체화하는데 오랜 시간이 걸리기도 하고, 어떤 때는 순식간에 완성된 그림이 머릿속에 그려지기도 한다.
-독자들에게 직접 작품 몇점을 소개해달라.

이번 작품은 모두 Self-Concealment 시리즈다. 현재 진행 중인 'Self-Concealment' 시리즈는 인간의 은폐와 드러냄, 그리고 욕망의 본질을 탐구한다. 이 작품들에서 '태우기'라는 행위는 이중적 의미를 지닌다 - 소멸과 은폐의 수단이면서 동시에 새로운 선과 색을 드러내는 표현 방식이다. 저는 제 내면의 욕망이 불길 속에서 정제되어 종이 위에 흔적으로 남기를 바란다. 그렇게 은폐와 폭로의 경계에서 멈춘 욕망의 흔적들이 작품이 된다.

-왜 작가로서의 삶을 선택했나.
제가 전하고 싶은 이야기를 작품을 통해 표현하고 싶었다. 비록 짧은 순간일지라도, 제 작품을 마주하는 분들의 마음에 작은 울림을 전하고 싶은 바람이 있다.
-작가로 활동하며 가장 힘들었던 순간이 있다면 언제였나.
단순히 색만 다른 반복적인 작업을 지양하고, 매 전시마다 새로운 시도를 하면서도 제 작품 세계의 일관성을 유지하고 싶다. 하지만 늘 새로운 아이디어가 떠오르는 것은 아니어서, 이 균형을 맞추는 것이 가장 큰 도전이다.
-반대로 가장 행복했던 순간은?
제 작품은 노동의 집약체라고 생각한다. 작가의 삶이 항상 행복할 것이라는 환상은 갖고 있지 않다. 작업에 대한 열정은 있지만 그 과정에서 행복만을 추구하지는 않는다. 오히려 작품 활동은 때로는 고된 노동이 될 수 있다고 생각한다.
-앞으로의 전시 계획은.
앞으로도 꾸준히 작품 활동을 이어가며, 새로운 전시 기회를 만들어갈 계획이다.

- Where do you mainly get inspiration when you draw your works?
You may get inspiration from external factors, such as the impressions you received at an exhibition or a passage from a book, but most of the time, personal emotions that come to mind in everyday life become the source of your work. Sometimes it takes a long time to materialize these emotions into a work, and sometimes a completed picture is drawn in your head in an instant.
- Please introduce a few of your works to the readers.
All of these works are from the Self-Concealment series. The ongoing 'Self-Concealment' series explores the nature of human concealment and revelation, and desire. In these works, the act of 'burning' has a dual meaning - it is a means of annihilation and concealment, but at the same time, it is a method of expression that reveals new lines and colors. I hope that my inner desires are refined in the flames and leave traces on paper. In this way, the traces of desire that stop at the boundary between concealment and revelation become works of art.
-Why did you choose to live as an artist?
I wanted to express the stories I wanted to tell through my works. Even if it is only for a short moment, I hope to convey a small resonance in the hearts of those who encounter my works.
-When was the most difficult moment while working as an artist?
I want to avoid repetitive work that is simply different in color, and maintain the consistency of my work while trying something new for each exhibition. However, I do not always come up with new ideas, so striking this balance is the biggest challenge.
-On the other hand, what was the happiest moment?
I think my work is a labor-intensive product. I don’t have the illusion that an artist’s life will always be happy. I have a passion for my work, but I don’t pursue happiness alone in the process. Rather, I think that creative work can sometimes be hard work.
-What are your future exhibition plans?
I plan to continue my creative work and create new exhibition opportunities in the future.
