GC녹십자가 면역항암제 혁신신약 개발의 속도를 내고 있다.
GC녹십자(GC Biopharma)는 기존 면역항암제에 불응하는 환자들을 치료하기 위한 혁신 신약 개발을 목표로 넥스아이(NEX-I)와 공동개발 계약을 체결했다고 11월 18일 밝혔다.
이번 협력은 넥스아이의 종양 미세환경 내 불응성 인자 발굴 플랫폼과 GC녹십자의 고유 항체 개발 기술을 결합하여 새로운 항암 치료 옵션을 제공하기 위한 것으로, 두 회사는 항체 기반 치료제 개발을 위한 후보물질 도출부터 개발 전 과정을 포괄하는 협력관계를 구축하게 된다.
면역항암제는 환자의 미세종양환경 내 면역세포가 암세포를 공격해 암을 치료하도록 유도하는 약물로, 글로벌 블록버스터 의약품인 옵디보(Opdivo®)와 키트루다(Keytruda®)가 널리 사용되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 면역항암제에 반응하지 않거나 치료 후 재발한 암에서는 기존 치료제의 효과가 떨어지며, 대체 치료법이 거의 없는 상황이다.
이에 GC녹십자와 넥스아이는 면역항암제에 불응하는 암 모델을 활용하여 치료제 신규 타겟을 발굴하고, 이에 대한 first-in-class 신약 후보물질을 개발할 계획이다.
넥스아이는 이미 옵디보 개발사인 일본 오노약품공업(Ono Pharmaceutical)에 첫 프로젝트를 기술이전하며 면역항암 불응성 인자를 표적하는 항암 신약 연구개발 역량을 입증한 바 있다.
정재욱 GC녹십자 R&D 부문장은 "이번 협력을 통해 면역항암제 불응성 환자들에게 보다 혁신적이고 효과적인 치료제를 제공함으로써 환자들의 삶의 질 개선에 기여할 것"이라고 전했다.
윤경완 넥스아이 대표는 “GC녹십자와 함께 공동연구를 시작하게 되어 기쁘고, 이 공동연구를 통해 넥스아이의 신규 타겟 발굴 플랫폼 기술이 고도화되고 확장되고 있음을 증명할 것”이라며, “GC녹십자와의 협력으로 양사의 기술력을 결합하여 경쟁력 있는 신약 개발이 이루어질 것”이라고 기대감을 표했다.

GC Biopharma is accelerating the development of innovative immuno-oncology drugs.
GC Biopharma announced on November 18 that it has entered into a collaboration agreement with NEX-I to develop innovative new drugs for the treatment of patients refractory to existing immuno-oncology therapies.
The collaboration will combine NEX-I's platform for identifying refractory factors in the tumor microenvironment with GC's proprietary antibody development technology to provide new cancer treatment options, and will encompass the entire process from candidate discovery to development of antibody-based therapeutics.
Immuno-oncology drugs are drugs that induce immune cells in a patient's micro-tumor environment to attack cancer cells and treat cancer, with global blockbuster drugs Opdivo® and Keytruda® being widely used. However, in cancers that do not respond to these immuno-oncology drugs or relapse after treatment, existing therapies are less effective, and few alternative treatments are available.
GC GlaxoSmithKline and Nexai will utilize cancer models that are refractory to immuno-oncology drugs to identify novel targets for therapy and develop first-in-class drug candidates.
Nexai has already demonstrated its capabilities in R&D of anti-cancer drugs targeting immuno-oncology refractory factors by transferring its first project to Ono Pharmaceutical, the developer of Opdivo.
“Through this collaboration, we will contribute to improving the quality of life of patients by providing more innovative and effective treatments for immuno-oncology refractory patients,” said Dr. Jae-Wook Chung, Head of R&D at GC Green Cross.
