2020년 코로나 팬데믹 시기, 러시아는 세계에서 최초로 코로나 백신인 스푸트니크 V를 만들었다. 이렇게 빨리 개발할 수 있었던 이유는 이미 개발된 중동호흡기증후군(메르스) 백신을 기반으로 개량했기 때문이다. 3상 결과가 발표된 이후, 세계적인 주목을 받고 있는 가운데 비용은 매우 저렴하면서도 우수한 예방효과 및 적은 부작용, 간편한 유통, 라이선스 개방에 관대하여 각국 내 생산, 수급이 용이하기 때문에 펜데믹 종료와 더불어 게임 체인저가 될 백신이기 때문에 하루 빨리 도입해야 한다는 평가가 지대했다. 전 세계는 이와 같은 러시아의 기술에 깜짝 놀랐다.
그러나 그 놀라움은 서방 세계와 미국이 발표하기를 러시아 백신은 너무 급조되어 만들었기에 그 효능성에 대해 의심스럽다며 러시아 백신을 믿지 않았다. 그러면서 화이자, 모더나를 출시하여 열심히 팔아먹었다. 게다가 일각에서는 체르노빌 원자력발전소도 폭발한 러시아인데 그런 러시아가 만든 백신이 믿을 수 있냐며 WHO 공식 백신에 등록되는 것을 거부했다. 또 어떤 일각에서는 체르노빌보다 더한 인류의 해악을 끼칠 것으로 주장하기도 했었다. 그러나 러시아 백신의 효능에 대해서 러시아에 거주하고 있는 교민들도 믿을만 하다는 반응이 대부분이었고 특히 유튜버인 모스누나도 직접 스푸트니크를 접종하여 상황별로 항체가 얼마나 생기는지, 방송까지 했을 정도로 당시에는 가장 믿을만한 백신이었다.
그리고 이 글을 쓰고 있는 나도 스푸트니크 라이트 백신을 맞고 항체가 살아있는 6개월 동안 그 흔한 감기도 걸리지 않는 효능을 겪어보았다. 그리고 화이자나 모더나와 달리 부작용도 훨씬 덜했다. 화이자와 모더나의 부작용으로 인해 사망자가 세계 곳곳에서 속출했지만 스푸트니크 맞고 부작용으로 죽었다는 사람은 거의 보거나 들어본 적이 없다. 그러나 본래 러시아인들은 백신 없이도 자신들의 건강을 유지해 왔다며 맞지 않았기에 정부조차도 더 이상 백신을 생산하는 것을 멈추게 되었다. 그러나 펜데믹이 진행 중인 현재까지도 러시아 백신은 물백신 의혹을 받은 중국 시노백 및 시노팜에 밀려 WHO 주요 백신으로 인정받지 못하고 있다.
개발국인 러시아의 전신이 제2세계의 선봉이었던 공산주의 소련이였고 30년 전 소련 붕괴 이후 자본주의와 민주주의 체계로 바뀌었지만 최근 10년 동안 미국과 유럽연합 등 제1 세계와 다시 대립각을 세우고 있기 때문에 외교적인 이유로 도입하기 껄끄럽다는 의견이 공존했다. 미국과 서구는 온 인류가 말라죽든, 전염병으로 죽든 상관하지 않고 이데올로기적인 측면을 강조하여 믿을 수 없다고 러시아 백신을 받지 말자는 의견을 공론화시켰다. 그러면서 최근 공개된 미국 외교문서에 의하면 미국이 브라질에 스푸트니크 V 채용을 하지 않도록 압박을 넣어야 한다고 주장까지 했다는 의혹이 재기되었다. 이는 러시아라면 정치적인 자존심 경쟁 및 대립에 몰두해 있기에 진정한 인류애와는 거리가 먼 부분이라고 생각된다.
인류가 죽든 말든, 러시아가 만들면 무조건 불신임, 모든 인류에 있어 악의 축으로 돌리기 위해 안간힘을 쓰고 있는 것이다. 이제 코로나 백신에 대해 러시아는 다른 서구나 미국보다 한 단계 더 진보했다. 러시아가 전 세계에서 사상 처음으로 신종 코로나의 '비강 백신' 접종을 시작한 것이다. '코로나 비강 백신'은 기존의 러시아 '스푸트니크V' 백신을 코에 분사하는 '스프레이 형식'으로 만든 것이다. 즉, '주사형'보다는 접종이 쉽다. 또헌 코 점막이에 강력한 면역층을 형성하게 되면서 바이러스의 체내 침투를 막을 것이라는게 아나스타시아 라코바 모스크바 부시장의 설명이다. 이러한 스푸트니크 비강 백신은 올해 4월 1일 러시아 보건부에 코로나 백신으로 정식 등록되었다. 주로 부스터용으로 사용되는 스푸트니크 라이트에 이어 러시아는 5번째 백신을 개발한 것이다.
스푸트니크 V를 개발한 가말레야 센터는 기존 스푸트니크와 같은 성분인 아데노바이러스-26형과 5형으로 스프레이형 비강 백신을 만들었고, 이 비강 백신에 대한 임상 실험에는 푸틴 대통령도 참가했다. 허권날 코 쑤시며 PCR 검사하는 것보다 훨씬 더 낫다. 왜냐면 이백신은 한 번 분사하면 끝이기 때문이다. 한국에서도 PCR 테스트와 백신 접종에 대해 강한 불만을 재기한 사람들이 많았다. 가장 큰 문제는 백신에 대한 불신임보다는 백신을 맞고 이후의 후유증이다. 백신 맞고 나서 후유증 때문에 고생하는 사람 많이 봤다. 1~2차까지는 타이레놀로 버틴 사람이 있다 하지만 사람의 체질에 따라 어떤 증상이 올지 알 수가 없다. 심각한 경우, 목숨까지 잃는 사람도 봤다. 게다가 백신이 효험이 있는게 아니라 돌파감염이 된다는 것이 문제다. 사람의 체질에 따라 다르겠지만 화이자나 모더나를 맞고 심한 후유증에 시달리는 사람도 있는 스푸트니크나 비강 백신은 그런 후유증이 거의 없다.
그럼에도 불구하고 영국에서는 비강 백신은 우리가 기대했던 것 만큼의 임상에서 효과를 보이지 못했다고 폄하했다. 코와 폐에 백신을 직접 전달하는 것은 유망한 방법이지만 이번 임상시험 결과는 비강백신의 효과를 입증하는 데 어려움이 있을 것이라고 평가절하한 것이다. 참 이상한 일이다. 러시아가 개발하면 무조건 평가절하가 주류를 이루고 서구 언론들은 러시아에 대해 적개심을 갖도록 유도하는 기사를 써댄다. 세계 최초로 우주에 위성을 쏘고 우주 비행을 한 국가인데도 말이다. lukybaby7@gmail.com
