도덕과 빵이 균형을 이루는 민주주의가 필요
민주주의가 무너지는 소리를 누가 먼저 들었을까? 독일 바이마르공화국이 히틀러에게 미소를 보낼 때 들었다. 부르주아혁명(시민혁명)으로 시작된 서구민주주의의 붕괴였다.
훨씬 전에 로마공화정이 왕정으로 바뀔 때도 들었도 그 전에 아테네 민주주의가 무너질 때도 들었다.
시간이 흘러 세계대전이 끝나고 히틀러 체제가 무너지고 민주주의가 확산될 때 역사의 새로운 진전에 대한 희망을 가졌지만 살상을 동반한 이념대결과 빈발하는 군부쿠데타로 무너질 때 다시 들었다.
그 시기에 우리도 두 차례 군부쿠데타를 겪었다. 그래도 그 반동의 시절을 잘 견뎌냈다.
그러나 민주주의가 오고가는 계절과 같고 차고 기우는 달과 같은 것인지 우리는 점쟁이도 예측못한 윤석열 시대를 맞았고 미국은 악동 트럼프 시대를 맞았다. 러시아에서 푸틴의 시대는 20년을 넘었다.
짧았던 인민민주주의의 구호는 흔적도 없이 사라졌고 번성하던 자유민주주의도 길을 잃었나 보다.
이제 민주주의의 시대는 저무는 것일까? 힘이 빠진다. 민주주의를 떠받치는 대중은 왜 민주주의를 외면하나? 그러나 다시 또 생각해본다.
민주주의에 어떤 결함이 있는 것일까? 민주주의를 정신의 작용으로만 간주한 오류가 아닐까? 정신의 작용인 동시에 물질적인 것으로 민주주의를 다시 바라보아야 할 것 같다.
