더불어민주당과 조국혁신당이 드디어 대통령 '탄핵'의 깃발을 힘껏 들었다. 민주당은 장외집회를 시작하고 지지자들에게 총동원령까지 내렸다. 혁신당은 11월10일 조국 대표가 직접 나서서 윤석열 대통령에게 남은 2년 6개월 임기를 ‘반납’하라며 하야를 요구하고, 이를 받아들이지 않으면 탄핵하겠다고 으름장을 놓았다.
하지만 민심은 싸늘하다.
이재명 더불어민주당 대표의 공직선거법 위반 1심 선고와 위증교사 1심 선고가 오는 11월15일과 11월25일로 예정된 상황에서 민주당의 대규모 장외집회는 누가 보더라도 ‘법원 겁박’을 위한 ‘방탄 집회’에 불과한 까닭이다.
실제로 더불어민주당은 지난 11월2일과 9일 서울 도심에서 대규모 장외집회를 열었다. 친명(친 이재명 계의 준말)계 최대 조직인 더민주혁신회의는 오는 11월15일 공직선거법 위반 혐의 1심 선고일에 서울중앙지법 앞에서 장외 투쟁을 예고했다. 그다음 날인 11월16일에는 야 4당과 함께 장외집회를 공동 개최하기로 했다.
이재명 대표 1심 선고일을 전후해 이처럼 대규모 장외집회를 여는 것에 대해 국민의힘 한동훈 대표는 “이재명 대표를 위한 ‘판사 겁박용’”이라고 비판했다.
국민 다수의 생각도 크게 다르지 않을 것이다.
이재명 더불어민주당 대표가 인천 계양을 민주당 당원들에게 직접 문자를 보내 “서울시청 역을 가득 메워 달라"며 집회 참여를 독려하고 나섰는데도 참여자 수가 되레 줄었다는 게 그 방증이다. 이를 기점으로 그동안 윤석열 대통령 부부를 겨냥했던 한동훈 국민의힘 대표의 총구(銃口)가 이재명 대표 쪽으로 선회한 것은 여간 다행스러운 일이 아닐 수 없다.
실제로 한동훈 국민의힘 대표는 전날 오전 민주당의 집회를 “판사 겁박 무력시위”로 규정하면서 “역풍을 받을까 두려워 마치 따로따로 하는 것처럼 말하지만, 누가 보아도 ‘민노총+촛불행동+더불어민주당’이 한날 한 무대에서 원팀(,하나의 팀)이라는 것”이라고 지적했다.
앞서 지난 11월8일에는 “이재명 더불어민주당 대표가 본인 범죄 혐의에 대한 법원의 형사 판결 선고를 1주일 앞두고 총동원령을 내렸다”면서 “대한민국 건국 이래 특정인의 범죄 혐의에 대한 법원의 유죄 판결을 막기 위해 진영 전체에 총동원령을 내리는 이런 장면은 없었다”라고 질타했다.
윤석열 대통령에게는 날을 세우면서도 이재명 더불어민주당 대표에 대해서는 직접적인 비판을 자제하던 모습과는 확연히 달라진 모습이다. 그동안 한동훈 대표는 윤석열 대통령 면담 이후 김건희 여사의 대외활동 중단, 참모진 인사개편, 특별감찰관 임명 등을 요구하며 대통령실을 향한 압박 수위를 높이는 등 윤석열-한동훈 갈등 구도를 확장하는 모습을 보였었다.
특히 최근 당 게시판에서 한동훈 대표와 그의 가족 이름을 도용해, 한동훈 대표를 지지하며 윤석열 대통령 부부를 저격한 다수의 게시글이 논란이 되면서 갈등이 더욱 커졌다. 급기야 민주당 장외집회 맞불형식으로 광화문 광장에서 진행된 보수 집회에서는 “이재명-한동훈 감옥!” 등의 구호가 터져 나오기도 했다.
이러다 한동훈 대표가 과거 김무성이나 유승민처럼 ‘보수의 배신자’로 낙인찍힐지도 모른다는 우려가 당 안팎에서 나오기도 했다. 특히 현재 권력과 미래 권력 간 갈등 구도는 최근 윤석열 대통령의 지지율 하락 추세와 맞물리며 과거 탄핵을 경험한 여권의 중진급 인사들을 중심으로 ‘당정 공멸’ 우려가 터져 나왔다. 당 상임고문인 정의화 전 국회의장이 한동훈 대표에게 “당내 화합과 대야 투쟁에 좀 더 적극적으로 나서 달라”고 요구한 것은 그런 연유다. 이런 요구들을 한동훈 대표가 수용하고 내부를 향하던 총구의 방향을 이재명 더불어민주당 대표 쪽으로 돌린 건 여간 다행스러운 일이 아닐 수 없다.

사실 한동훈 대표에 대한 당원과 국민의 지지는 그가 법무부 장관 재임 시절 범죄혐의자인 이재명 더불어민주당 대표를 향한 매서운 질타를 기억하고 그런 한동훈을 지지하는 것이지, 윤석열 대통령 부부를 향해 내부총질 하는 한동훈에 대한 지지가 아니다. 비록 윤석열 대통령의 처신에 고구마를 먹은 것처럼 답답함을 느낀다고 해도, 현 정권이 무너지는 것을 바라는 당원과 국민은 그리 많지 않을 것이다. 한동훈 대표는 이 점을 간과해선 안 된다. 한동훈 대표의 총구가 법치를 무너뜨리려는 이재명 대표를 향한 것은 옳은 선택이다.
