지난 11월 7일, 윤석열 대통령이 전격적으로 사과의 기자회견을 한다는 소식을 듣고 왠지 불안했다. 여기에서 진솔한 사과가 되지 않으면 물이 배를 엎어버릴 것이다. 그러나 반면에 대통령이라는 직책에 어울리는 위엄을 절대 허물어뜨려서는 안 된다. 이래저래 한 발 삐끗하여 잘못 내디디면 천 길 낭떠러지 밑으로 떨어질 수 있는 위태위태한 형국이었다.
그러나 기자회견을 쭉 보며 차츰 몸 전체로 안심의 기운이 뻗쳐나갔다. “역시 윤석열이구나!”하지 않을 수 없었다. 이것은 21년 7월에 내가 그를 처음 만나고 나서 가진 강렬한 소감이기도 했다. 그동안 내가 믿고 지지했던 그의 진면목이 그대로 살아있었다. 그는 진솔하고 성의 있는 사과를 하면서도 결코 위엄의 벽을 허물지 않았다. 안도의 한숨이 절로 새어 나왔다.
