POSTECH and Korea University Research Team Develop Next-Generation Transparent Cooling Film Based on Radiation Cooling Principle

A next-generation transparent cooling film has been developed based on the radiation cooling principle that blocks the hot sun and keeps you cool.

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) announced on the 6th that the research team of Professor Noh Jun-seok of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering, and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, alumnus Koh Byeong-su of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Jae-beom Noh, an integrated course in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, in collaboration with the research team of Professor Lee Heon of the Department of New Materials Engineering at Korea University and Dong-woo Chae, an integrated course, developed a transparent radiation cooling film that uses a structure with holes like a mosquito net to control solar heat and lower the internal temperature.

This research was recently published in the international academic journal in the materials field, ‘Advanced Functional Materials.’

When an object is exposed to sunlight, its temperature generally increases, but there is a technology that lowers the temperature by emitting heat on its own without separate power. This is called ‘radiation cooling.’ Recently, research has been actively conducted to apply this technology to transparent films like glass, but there was a limitation that the cooling effect was not sufficient because solar heat was transmitted together.

To solve this problem, a joint research team of POSTECH and Korea University succeeded in developing a film that had both radiant cooling performance and transparency by combining a perforated silver (Ag) substrate, a Bragg mirror, and a PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) coating.

A Bragg mirror is a mirror designed with a multilayer thin film structure to reflect near-infrared light that absorbs a lot of solar heat. In addition, the research team designed a structure like a screen by drilling micrometer (㎛)-sized holes in the silver substrate to allow some light to pass through and secure a field of view. In addition, a silicon-based PDMS coating with a high absorption rate was used to emit far-infrared rays in the atmospheric window1) region.

The film, which was made by stacking layers of perforated silver substrates, Bragg mirrors, and PDMS coatings, simultaneously achieved excellent cooling performance and secured visibility, and the glass applied with this film maintained a temperature 22.1°C lower than the PDMS-coated glass.

Professor Noh Jun-seok, who led the research, said, “This technology can be mass-produced and applied to actual industries, and has great potential in the fields of architecture and the environment.” He added, “Above all, it can effectively release heat and reduce energy consumption, so it is very significant as a core technology for a sustainable future.”

Meanwhile, this research was conducted with the support of the POSCO Holdings N.EX.T IMPACT Metasurface-based Planar Optics Research Institute and the Ministry of Science and ICT/National Research Foundation of Korea’s Leading Future Technology Research Lab.
