브레이크뉴스 노보림 기자= 작품은 작가를 닮는다는 말이 있다. 어찌보면 창작자의 생각이나 작업 환경은 그대로 작품에 투영될 수 밖에 없다. 때문에 작품을 들여다 보기 이전에, 작가를 먼저 들여다 보면 그 작품을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있다. 이에 브레이크뉴스는 국내 작가들과의 릴레이 인터뷰를 통해 작가의 작품은 물론, 삶의 이야기를 들어보는 시간을 가지려고 한다. <편집자 주>
-작품을 그릴 때 주로 어디에서 영감을 받나.
특정한 장소에 국한되지 않고 다양한 매체와 일상에서 영감을 받는다. 드라마, 영화, 애니메이션을 감상하다가 문득 떠오르는 아이디어를 바로 스케치로 옮기기도 하며, 친구들과의 만남, 산책, 충분한 휴식도 창작에 큰 도움이 된다고 느낀다. 이렇게 일상 속에서 접하는 모든 것에 작품에 대한 프레임을 씌우는 상상을 하며, 그러한 과정 속에서 아이디어가 점차 구체화되어 작품으로 이어진다.
-독자들에게 자신의 작품 2~3점 소개해 달라.

이 작품은 화선지와 먹물 이외의 재료를 처음으로 사용한 작업이다. 건축적 관점에서 접근하였으며, 쉬는 중에 건물을 거꾸로 바라보는 순간에서 영감을 받았다. 건물의 모습이 피아노 건반처럼 보였고, 그로 인해 마치 선율이 느껴지는 듯한 인상을 받았다. 이러한 경험을 이미지로 표현하며, 건축과 음악이 자연스럽게 어우러지는 순간을 담아냈다.

작업실에서 작업하던 중, 창문과 창틀, 커튼 사이로 깊숙이 들어오는 빛이 눈에 들어왔다. 창문을 열어보니 선선하게 바람도 스쳐 지나간다. 작품에 지쳐 잠시 창 밖을 바라보았을 때, 그 순간의 풍경을 형상화해 보았다.

애니메이션 ‘인사이드 아웃’을 정말 재미있게 보았다.
등장하는 감정 캐릭터들이 귀엽고 유쾌하게 다가와서, 저만의 느낌으로 그 캐릭터들을 재구성해 보았다.
-왜 작가로서의 삶을 선택했나.
나는 건축설계를 전공하고 약 10년간 설계사무소에서 건축 프로젝트를 담당해 왔다. 이 시기에 취미로 캘리그라피를 시작하게 되었고, 이는 본격적인 작품 활동을 시작하는 계기가 되었다. 다양한 시도를 통해 작업을 점차 확장하면서, 건축과 캘리그라피는 나의 창작 세계에 중요한 요소로 자리잡았다. 비록 서로 다른 분야처럼 보이지만, 두 영역에서 얻은 이론적 지식과 경험들이 현재의 작업에 자연스럽게 녹아들고 있다. 이러한 창작의 즐거움이 나를 작가로서의 삶으로 이끌었으며, 앞으로도 지속적인 도전을 이어갈 원동력이 될 것이다.
-작가로 활동하며 가장 힘들었던 순간이 있다면 언제였나.
나는 미술이나 서예 분야의 전공자가 아니다. 처음 ‘캘리그라피라’는 분야를 접하고, 그 후 ‘그림’ 형태의 작품을 창작하고자 했을 때, 그 출발점(컨셉 등)을 어떻게 설정해야 할지, 창작 활동을 어떻게 지속해야 할지, 그리고 일상생활을 어떻게 조화롭게 유지해야 할지에 대한 막연한 불안감이 가장 큰 도전 과제였다. 이러한 불확실한 상황 속에서 방향성을 찾는 것이 쉽지 않았다.
-반대로 가장 행복했던 순간은?
저는 거창한 행복보다 소소한 행복을 더욱 중요하게 여긴다. 작품을 창작하는 과정에서 고민을 거듭하고, 그 사이에 잠시 휴식을 취하는 시간이 주는 즐거움이 크다. 또한, 작품을 완성한 후, 동료 작가들과 함께 간단한 술 한잔을 나누는 순간이 나에게는 큰 행복으로 다가온다.
-앞으로의 전시 계획은
이번 전시가 나의 첫 개인전인 만큼, 다음 전시에 대한 구체적인 계획을 세울 여유가 부족했다. 그러나 작가로서의 활동을 지속하기 위해 꾸준히 작품을 창작하며, 차근차근 다음 전시에 대한 구상을 진행할 예정이다.

-Where do you mainly get inspiration when you draw your works?
I am not limited to a specific place, but I get inspiration from various media and daily life. I sometimes sketch out ideas that suddenly come to mind while watching dramas, movies, or animations, and I also feel that meeting friends, going for a walk, and getting enough rest are also very helpful for my creative work. I imagine putting a frame for my work on everything I encounter in my daily life, and through that process, my ideas gradually become more concrete and lead to my works.
-Please introduce 2-3 of your works to the readers.
This work is the first time I used materials other than rice paper and ink. I approached it from an architectural perspective, and I was inspired by a moment when I looked upside down at a building while I was resting. The building looked like piano keys, and because of that, I felt like I could hear a melody. I expressed this experience as an image, and captured the moment when architecture and music naturally come together.
While working in my studio, I noticed the light coming in deep between the windows, window frames, and curtains. When I opened the window, a cool breeze passed by. When I got tired of my work and looked out the window for a moment, I tried to visualize the scenery at that moment.
I really enjoyed watching the animation ‘Inside Out’. The emotional characters that appear are cute and cheerful, so I tried to reconstruct them with my own feelings.
-Why did you choose to live as an artist?
I majored in architectural design and worked on architectural projects at a design firm for about 10 years. During this time, I started calligraphy as a hobby, which became the opportunity to start my full-fledged artistic career. As I gradually expanded my work through various attempts, architecture and calligraphy became important elements in my creative world. Although they seem to be different fields, the theoretical knowledge and experience I gained from the two fields are naturally incorporated into my current work. This joy of creation led me to life as an artist, and it will continue to be the driving force for me to continue to challenge myself in the future.
-When was the most difficult moment while working as an artist?
I am not a major in art or calligraphy. When I first encountered the field of ‘calligraphy’ and then wanted to create a work in the form of a ‘painting’, the vague anxiety about how to set the starting point (concept, etc.), how to continue creative activities, and how to maintain harmony with daily life was the biggest challenge. - Future exhibition plans
Since this is my first solo exhibition, I did not have enough time to make specific plans for the next exhibition. However, in order to continue my activities as an artist, I plan to steadily create works and gradually proceed with planning the next exhibition.
