[Contributed Article] In winter, what is the number 1 target for drivers to be wary of?

Winter was my favorite season as a child.

When I woke up in the morning and saw the gently piled up white snow, I felt so good that I used to walk on the white snow where no footprints were left. However, when I got my license and started driving and saw it snowing in the morning, I was worried about the romance of my childhood for a while.

The reason for this is because of ‘Black Ice,’ an assassin on the road, the No. 1 watchdog in winter that causes various traffic accidents and congestion. What is the black ice that plagues drivers in winter, and how is it made?

Black ice refers to a phenomenon that occurs when things on a shaded road are frozen again in the form of ice after snow or rain. This frozen ice is thin and transparent, so the black asphalt color of the road can be seen as it is, hence the term 'black ice'.

Black ice causes car accidents. It's really dangerous and I can't stress how many times I've said it.

Because it is thin and transparent, many drivers do not know that the road is frozen and drive it as a general asphalt road. can cause

In fact, as an accident caused by black ice, on December 14, 2019, 44 vehicles collided on the Sangju-Yeongcheon Expressway, causing 7 fatalities and 32 injuries. 41 vehicles collided with each other, resulting in 10 injuries.

In our hometown of Dangjin, on December 20, 2019, on National Road 32 from Seosan to Dangjin, a car accident caused by black ice caused a precious loss of life.

If we include general traffic accidents other than the fatal accidents we know, the number will be even higher. In case of snowfall, measures from local governments such as preemptive snow removal and application of calcium chloride are important, but above all, drivers' safe driving habits are particularly required.

Therefore, I would like to inform you of the three most important rules for preventing traffic accidents in winter.

First, secure a sufficient safe distance from the vehicle in front and drive defensively. According to the results of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority's braking distance test, the braking distance due to black ice is usually 4 to 7 times longer. The larger the vehicle, the longer the braking distance.

Second, when passing a section where freezing is expected (shade, tunnel entrance, exit, slope, etc.), you must absolutely decelerate to pass. This section does not receive much sunlight, so there is a high probability of road icing, so always be careful.

Third, sudden acceleration and sudden braking increase the probability of an accident. Sudden vehicle operation on black ice is very dangerous because vehicle turns and lane departure are out of control.

Finally, car accidents are not just other people's business. In Dangjin, the number of fatalities due to traffic accidents in 2021 alone was 34, with about 3 deaths per month.

Like everyone else, he thought it was someone else's business, and he wouldn't have known that such a sad thing would happen to him.

Remember that I can only protect my safety on the road and that our society without worrying about traffic accidents can only be created by working together with all of us.
