Cultivate the habit of being rich in our children

-Kim Young-hee, CEO of the Endless Mothers Research Institute

Can I enjoy financial freedom and live a happy life? In the past, these wishes of parents were met to some extent. Lifelong jobs are now disappearing, and more than half of college graduates are unemployed. In addition, as the digital revolution accelerates, the world is rapidly changing with the development of social media as well as the evolution of artificial intelligence and the appearance of the metaverse. How can I prepare my child to enjoy financial freedom in this age?

30% of the world's wealth is owned by Jews. We have a higher IQ than them and are more diligent, so why is that? From the moment they are born to the moment they go to the grave, they learn the importance and sublime of money and practice it. In the lullaby of a newborn baby, there are contents such as ‘What should I sell this for? It is a nation that practices the teaching of 『Talmud』 that not teaching young children how to make money is raising children to be thieves.

Marcus Samuel, founder of the world-famous oil company Royal Dutch Shell, learned business as a child by helping his father, who ran a street vendor in a back alley. He learned firsthand the ‘principle of scarcity’ while working with his father. He thought that even a seemingly useless thing could be sold for a high price if it had a scarce value.

He traveled alone from England to Japan by boat at a young age, and came up with a business item for seashells lying on the mudflats of Japan. At that time, he made quite a lot of money by exporting seashells from Japan to England, which were not common in England. This is why the logo of the Royal Dutch Shell is a seashell. After crossing the Indian Ocean, he started an oil business by purchasing oil that was not of interest to the indigenous people of Indonesia.

What is the driving force that makes them do that? Let's take a closer look at the meaning of 'Bar Mitzvah', the 13-year-old Jewish coming-of-age ceremony. Then they memorize the Torah and become a member of Jewish society. The essence of coming-of-age ceremony is responsibility. Three gifts are given to a boy and a girl: a bible, a watch, and a gift. It means to live as a responsible human being who is not ashamed before God, keep your promises, and cherish your time.

If you collect a gift, the average is 50,000 to 60,000 dollars. Children start making money based on it from an early age. At the age of 20, he starts a social life with about 100 million won. This is a great background for 80-90% of Jewish youth to start a business. A representative figure that was born is the well-known Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg.

There's no such thing as too young to know the value of money. Warren Buffett, a Jew, said, "It's already too late" when asked, "Is it ok to teach money at age 6?" According to The Wall Street Journal, a five-year-old child is capable of determining what five dollars can buy, a seven- to eight-year-old can understand what saving and investing is, and by age 13-14, an account can be opened. It is said that you can open and choose stocks and trade.

So, when is the best time to start economic education for your children? There is a difference in the growth rate of each child, but usually from the age of 4, they learn the difference between coins and banknotes and begin to distinguish the amount of money. It is good to give pocket money occasionally from the age of 7, and to give it regularly from the first year of elementary school. For elementary and lower grades, 2,000 to 6,000 won per week, on average, 10,000 won is appropriate. When giving pocket money for the first time, it is best not to exceed the interval of a week, and when you are in the 3rd or 4th grade of elementary school, it is good to increase the cycle by 2 weeks, and when you are in the upper grades, it is good to increase it by 1 month.

It is also a good idea to set up investment, savings, consumption, and donation piggy banks on your child's desk and teach the 3:3:3:1 rule. The rule of 3:3:3:1 is that 30% of the total pocket money is for investment, 30% for savings, 30% for consumption, and 10% for donation.

A 2002 study by Marty Rothman, professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota, found that children who had been doing household chores from an early age were more insightful, responsible and confident. Harvard Medical School professor George Bailant followed 456 children between the ages of 11 and 16 for 35 years, and found that the only thing in common among successful adults was the chores they experienced from childhood.

It is a living economics education for a child as a member of her family to help with housework and receive pocket money in return. Simple errands can be done from 3 years old. When you can communicate with your child to some extent, it is also good to keep a piggy bank by your side and educate yourself to save the coins you received from running an errand into the piggy bank. For a 5-year-old child, about 200-300 won is suitable for running errands.

When my child cleans the house and separates the collection, I pay 500 won each and create a bankbook in the child's name so that I can see the deposit and withdrawal details on my own. The education expenses paid to the children were a way to inform their parents that they are debts to repay if they earn money later, but they were also used to practice how to properly distribute income and expenses and to develop economic skills.

Therefore, they can save their own cell phone costs and pocket money and appreciate their parents' efforts. It has several advantages, such as knowing that your parents' money is not public money. When I started working, I first saved money, picked up suitable financial products, real estate, and stocks little by little to get into the habit of economy of scale, so that I could easily buy a house.

Ultimately, to be free from money is to broaden your financial knowledge and create an economic avatar where money makes money. In the era of ultra-low interest rates, simply saving the money you have saved will result in a decrease in its value with time, even considering the inflation rate.

In economic life, there is an urgent need for individual freedom to act according to their own will, that is, to re-recognize wealth that derives freedom from money. So, at the end of 2018, I ended up publishing 『My Child's Rich Habits』. This book is a comprehensive educational book that teaches how to develop 'economic intelligence' and a manual for 'studying money' for our children in one book. We have summarized the core of the economic education law for children of the world that we did not know, such as Jews, Germany, the United States, France, and New Zealand.

Being rich is a result of rich habits, a firm mind about money, and parental interest and education about wealth. As Robert Kiyosaki et al. <Rich Dad Poor Dad> assert, what you pass on to your children is not money, but a smart rich habit of dealing with money. Perhaps that is the best legacy.
