제가 고등학교시절 친구와 함께 여름방학에 진주 촉석루를 방문한 적이 있었습니다. 그때 의기(義妓) 논개가 적장 ‘모곡촌육조(毛谷村六助)’를 끌어안고 시퍼런 남강 물에 몸을 던졌다는 ‘의암(義巖)’에 서서 감상에 젖어 본때가 있었지요.
저는 그때부터 부끄럽게도 논개가 의로운 기생이라고만 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 요즘에 와서야 논개에 대해 잘못알고 있었다는 것을 알았습니다. 그것은 우리가 학교교육을 잘못 받은 탓이기도 합니다. 지금도 백과사전에 <논개>를 쳐 보면 ‘의기’로 쓰여 있습니다.
