26일 <미나리>의 정이삭 감독, 배우 스티븐 연, 한예리, 윤여정이 함께하는 화상 기자간담회가 개최됐다. 이번 행사는 코로나19(신종 코로나바이러스 감염증)의 확산 방지 및 예방 차원, 사회적 거리두기의 일환으로 온라인 생중계로 진행됐다.
<미나리>는 희망을 찾아 낯선 미국으로 떠나온 한국 가족의 아주 특별한 여정을 담은, 2021년 전 세계가 기다린 원더풀한 이야기를 그린 영화다. 특히 <미나리>는 제36회 선댄스 영화제 심사위원 대상과 관객상 수상을 기점으로 골든 글로브 외국어영화상 및 미국배우조합상(SAG) 후보에 오르며 전 세계 74관왕 157개 노미네이트를 기록해 오스카 유력 후보작으로 전 세계의 스포트라이트를 받고 있다.
<미나리>의 연출과 각본은 <문유랑가보>로 제60회 칸 영화제에서 황금 카메라상, 주목할 만한 시선 부문의 후보에 올라 영화계에 큰 반향을 불러일으킨 정이삭 감독이 맡았고, 스티븐 연, 한예리, 윤여정, 앨런 김, 노엘 케이트 조 등이 출연한다.

이날 정이삭 감독은 “캘리포니아에서 이렇게 인사드리게 됐다. 한국에서 <미나리>에 대해 많은 관심을 보내줘서 감사하다. 3월 3일 개봉을 앞두고 있는데 <미나리>에 대한 한국 관객들의 반응이 어떨지 정말 궁금하다. <미나리>를 촬영하면서 한국 생각을 너무나 많이 했던 것 같다”고 밝혔다.
윤여정은 “현재 캐나다 밴쿠버에서 촬영 중이다. 한국 관객들이 우리 영화 <미나리>를 어떻게 봐줄지 궁금하다. 우리는 식구처럼 작은 금액으로 영화를 만들었다. 그러다보니 이런 관심은 생각도 못했고 기대도 안했다. 뜨거운 반응을 보여주니 처음에는 좋았는데, 지금은 <미나리>를 본 분들이 실망할까봐 조금 걱정스럽고 떨린다”고 말했다.
스티븐 연은 “한국에서 <미나리>를 선보일 수 있어 매우 기쁘다. <미나리>는 인간애를 보여줄 수 있는 영화라고 생각한다. 한국 개봉을 앞두고 있어 너무나 떨린다”고 소감을 전했다.
한예리는 “<미나리>가 조금 있으면 한국에서 개봉하게 됐는데, 제가 한국에 있으니 직접적인 관객들의 피드백과 이야기를 감독님, 배우들, 스태들에게 전달할 수 있을 것 같다. 개인적으로는 제가 이 영화를 사랑하는 만큼 좋은 성적이 있으면 좋겠지만, 영화를 잘 봐줬으면 하는 마음이 크다. 열심히 했으니 많은 관심과 사랑을 부탁드리고 싶다”고 밝혔다.
정이삭 감독은 전 세계 74관왕을 차지한 <미나리>의 보편성과 특별함에 대해 “<미나리>는 제 개인적인 이야기를 담고 있는 영화인데, 이 영화가 많은 호평과 극찬을 받는 사실 자체가 놀랍고 신기하지만 겸허하게 받아들이고 있다. <미나리>가 많은 분들에게 공감대를 불어일으키고 있는 이유는 제 개인적인 이야기라서, 이민자의 이야기라서, 그때 당시의 시대를 담은 이야기라서가 아닌 우리들의 보편적인 인간들의 관계를 그렸기 때문이라고 생각한다”고 답했다.
이어 “많은 분들이 <미나리> 속 가족들이 겪는 갈등과 고충을 공감해주는 것 같다. 그리고 어려운 상황 속에서도 헤쳐나가는 가족들을 보며 공감하는 것 아닐까 싶다”며 “이런 이야기를 함에 있어 나라, 국적은 문제가 되지 않는다고 생각한다. 스토리의 힘이라고 말하고 싶고, 스티븐 연, 한예리, 윤여정, 앨런 김, 노엘 케이드 조 등 배우들이 너무나 훌륭했다고 생각한다. 깊이 있는 연기를 선보여줬다. 모든 배우들이 열린 마음으로 배역에 임했고, 각자 맡은 역할을 완벽히 소화해줬다”며 감사함을 표했다.

한예리는 <미나리> 촬영 에피소드와 관련해 “저와 윤여정 선생님은 공유숙박서비스를 이용해 한 집에서 지냈는데 모두가 함께 밥도 먹고, <미나리> 시나리오에 대해서도 이야기를 나누는 등 많은 시간을 함께 했다. 그 시간 동안 번역본을 문어체에서 구어체로 바꿀 수 있었다”며 “촬영 들어가기 전 모여서 한주 한주 찍을 분량만큼의 대본을 수정할 수 있었다. 그런 시간이 있었기 때문에 빠르게 진행될 수 있었고, 깊이 있게 시나리오에 대해 이야기를 할 수 있어 좋았다”고 말했다.
스티븐 연은 <미나리>을 함께 한 감독과 동료들에 대해 “모든 것들을 함께 잘 해나갈 수 있었던 건 감독님의 캐스팅 덕분이다. 훌륭한 동료 배우들과 함께 해 지금의 <미나리>가 완성될 수 있었다고 생각한다”며 “동료 배우들 뿐만 아니라 저 역시 작품에 헌신하며 많은 노력을 기울였고, <미나리>는 시나리오 자체가 훌륭했다. 시나리오에 가장 잘 맞는 배우들이 출연해 더욱 시너지가 났던 것 아닐까 싶다. 모두가 합심해 만들다보니 가족같은 느낌이 잘 담긴 것 같다”고 밝혔다.
특히 이민자로서 <미나리>를 통해 1세대 이민자를 연기한 스티븐 연은 “저는 실제 이민 가정에서 자랐고, 제가 4살때 부모님과 미국으로 건너오게 됐다. <미나리> 속 제이콥이 좋았던 건 진실된 캐릭터고, 제가 몰랐던 아버지 세대를 더욱 이해할 수 있게 된 점이다”며 “제 아버지를 제이콥 역 롤모델로 삼았다고 이야기할 수는 없지만, 궁극적으로 배역을 소화해나가면서 ‘내가 내 아버지구나’란 생각을 하게 됐다. 그렇지만 틀에 박히 그 시절, 그때의 아저씨 모습을 연기하고 싶지는 않았고, 그 시절을 살았던 제이콥이라는 사람 자체를 제가 공감하는 모습으로 표현하려고 했다”고 전했다.
윤여정은 <미나리>로 벌써 연기상 26관왕을 수상했다. 수상 소감에 대해 “축하해줘서 감사하다. 그런데 상패는 지금까지 1개를 받았다보니 체감은 전혀 못하고 있다. 그리고 제가 미국 할리우드 배우도 아니다보니 그냥 ‘나라가 넓으니 상도 많구나’ 정도로 느끼고 있다”고 너스레를 떨었다.
