―코로나19 확산으로 국악을 하는 예술인들의 어려움이 클 것 같은데, 요즘 어떻게 지내는가?
▲예술인들만 아니라 모두가 어렵다. 다들 인내하며 견디고 있다. 고진감래(苦盡甘來)라고 시간이 가면 잘 이겨내어 좋은 시절로 돌아갈 것이라고 생각한다. 다만 정부의 지원을 받는 국악인들보다는 그렇지 않는 예술인들이 더 많아 걱정이다.
‘부지화’는 전통음악 몰라보는 현실 지적
―대중국악 브랜드 ‘부지화’ 10주년 공연을 준비하고 있다고 들었다. ‘부지화’란 무슨 뜻인가?
▲부지화(不知畵)는 ‘그림을 보고도 그림을 모른다’는 것이니, 그림의 진면목을 제대로 볼 줄 모른다고 할까. 조선후기 화가 조희룡이 당시 천재화가인 고람의 그림을 알아보지 못하는 이들에게 한 말이다. 고람 전기(田琦, 1825~1854)는 <계산포무도> <매화초옥도> <설경산수도>를 그린 남종문인화가다. 신선이 도를 닦듯 담담한 화풍이었다고 하는데 서양음악에만 빠져 우리 주변에 있는 전통예술의 아름다움을 알아보지 못하는 현 상황을 정확히 지적하는 것 같아 따온 말이다.
―부지화 예술단은 언제 만들었나?
▲원래 해오던 공연 기획을 전통예술의 대중화를 위해 ‘부지화’로 브랜딩하여 2011년 6월부터 진행했다. 대중에게 친숙하게 다가가기 위해 국악에 현대 뮤지컬과 드라마를 접목했다. 그동안 한국의 아름다운 전통예술인 춤과 소리를 일반 대중들에게 어떻게 하면 친숙하게 다가가 어떻게 알릴까 하는 고민이 컸다. 국악은 우리 것인데도 즐기기가 어렵다고 생각한다. 일부 국악 마니아 층만 찾는 공연보다는 관객이 쉽고 재미있게 볼 수 있으면서도 지속성 있는 브랜드를 만들어야 한다는 생각을 했다. 총연출과 각본을 만든 황진경 단장과 함께 회사를 설립해 국악 대중화 브랜드 ‘부지화 공연’을 기획·제작 하게 되었는데, 벌써 10년이 지났다. 다양한 레퍼토리로 ‘시즌 20’까지 공연했다.

―국악의 대중화는 풀기 어려운 숙제인데….
▲내게는 ‘어떻게 대중에게 다가갈까’ 이것이 가장 큰 고민거리다. 한국인이라면 모두 가지고 있는 흥을 이끌어내기 위해 일단 친근하게 다가가려는 노력을 했고 대중가요, 평상복, 현대적인 안무로 이를 풀어내고 있다. 그동안 부지화 공연만 20차례, 필리핀 등지에서 자선공연도 수십 차례 열었다.
그리고 공연을 할 때 반드시 지키는 철칙은 국악이 중심이 되어야 한다는 것이다. 지금은 고인이 되셨지만 중요무형문화재 승무의 전수조교 임이조 선생님의 도움이 컸다. 특히 지금까지도 물심양면으로 도움을 주고 항상 참여하는 피리 명인 최경만 명인, 서도민요 유지숙 명창의 공연에 대한 반응도 뜨겁다. 해외공연 때 외국인들이 한국 전통예술인데도 언어가 다르고 내용을 잘 몰라도 그 구슬프고 강렬한 소리와 춤사위에 눈물을 흘리는 것을 여러 차례 경험했다.
임이조 ‘승무’ 본 후 운명 바뀌어
―국악과는 어떻게 인연을 맺게 됐나?
▲대학에서 경영학을 전공했고, 졸업 후 사업을 잘해 한때 돈도 많이 벌었다. 하지만 1997년 IMF 여파로 고생도 했다. 다시 직장인이 되어 삼성생명에 근무하다가 국악에 눈을 돌린 것이 계기가 되어 20년째 국악과 관계를 맺고 있다.
내 고향은 전북 전주인데 당시 남원시립 국악연수원 예술감독으로 있던 임이조 선생님이 ‘승무’를 연습하는 장면을 우연히 보게 되었다. 선생님의 춤을 보는 순간 심장이 멎는 듯했다. 뭐라 말할 수 없는 전율이 등허리를 타고 흐르는 듯했다. 바람이 대자리를 들추듯, 제비가 바람을 일으키듯, 우주 속에 지구가 자전과 공전을 하듯 장삼을 뿌리치고 거둘 때마다 아찔한 마음에 가슴이 먹먹해졌다. 그건 찰나였고 내 운명도 그렇게 바뀌었다.

▲임이조 선생님의 권유로 이매방 선생님을 알게 되었다. 고인이 된 두 분을 영원히 잊지 못한다. 한량무와 무당춤 여러 가지가 있지만 나는 ‘승무’를 좋아한다. 춤고수의 움직임이 전혀 없는 고요한 그 경지가 춤사위에서 ‘딱’ 하고 멈추는 그 순간이 너무 아름답다.
이매방 선생님의 춤은 염불장단에 맞추어 합장하면서 춤이 느리게 시작되는데, 사위를 살짝 뿌려 천천히 펼쳐 올리다 위로 크게 뿌려 팔을 넓게 펴 천천히 내리는 팔놀림을 보면 넋이 나갈 지경이다. 승무에 실린 자진타령과 굿거리 장단을 들어보면 장삼이 뿌려질 때의 그 맺고 풀고 ‘근원으로 돌아갈 수밖에 없는 되돌아옴’이 내게도 선생님에게 잊지 못할 추억이 아닐까 생각해본다.
―전통 국악인들과 어떤 공연을 했는지….
▲이매방·임이조 선생님 두 분을 모시고 외국으로 여러 차례 공연을 다녔다. ‘우리 춤의 이 경이로운 아름다움을 어떻게 알릴까?’ 머릿속에는 온통 그 생각뿐이었고 대중적으로 알리고 싶은 마음에 경기소리, 서도소리, 국악 연주를 ‘믹스’해 다양한 시도를 하게 되었다. 해외에도 알리고 대중도 좋아할 다양한 형식을 만들어 본 것이다. 정통 한류에 현대적인 안무와 힘 있는 타악 퍼포먼스도 더하기 시작했다.
평상복 입고 춤추는 국악 ‘신선’
―부지화 예술단이 자선공연을 많이 하는 이유는 무엇인가.
▲공연예술인은 먹고 살기 힘들다며 회사를 절대 차리지 말라던 임이조 선생의 만류도 기억난다. 하지만 선생님은 부지화 첫 번째 공연 때 자신은 물론이고 제자인 젊은 출연진을 설득하여 출연료 전액을 국악을 전공하는 학생들에게 장학금으로 지급했다. 문동옥·이춘희 선생님도 제자들에게 장학금을 지급했다.
부지화 두 번째 공연에서는 한국의 전통 풍습 중 하나인 ‘대보름 행사’를 부지화 공연과 연계하는 공연으로 기획해 3회 전 회 매진 기록을 세우며 호평을 받기도 했다.

―부지화 공연 중 가장 기억에 남는 공연은.
▲부지화 5회 공연은 MBC 에브리원 방송에 이춘희 선생과 바기오 정해철 한인회장 등 현지 후원으로 <무한걸스>의 연예인들이 국악을 배워 해외공연을 하는 공연을 기획제작해 대중화의 첫발을 디뎠다고 생각한다. 이후 국악과 민요, 한국 전통무용 등을 결합한 기존의 소리극과는 차별화된 국악 뮤지컬 형식의 ‘바람에 날려를 왔나’를 만들게 되었다.

―앞으로 부지화 10주년 기념 공을 연출한다면.
▲요즘은 트로트도 인기이고 모든 장르의 음악이 개성 넘치게 소비되는 시대라고 생각한다. 요즘 젊은 국악인들의 다양한 시도와 콜라보는 오히려 대중들에게 많은 사랑을 받고 있다. 이때 우리가 전통예술 국악을 K팝 못지않은 ‘K한류’로 기획해 세계에 선보이고 싶다. 코로나가 끝나기 전까지는 그 방식은 언택트(비대면) 공연도 가능하다고 생각한다.

Our generation lives with children who have fallen into the rapid fire rap of Jay-Z. However, in this day's band, there is a Korean-style rap that can't even give out a business card. It is also pansori. Modern pansori is placed on restrained drums and bass guitars, and it is harmonized with the amazing dance to give you a glimpse. Planning for “K Hallyu” Korean traditional music that is comparable to K-pop

At this time, we would like to plan the traditional Korean music as “K Hallyu,” which is comparable to K-pop, and show it to the world. Until the corona is over, I think the method is also possible for untact (non-face-to-face) performances.
In 2015, in a 6th grade elementary school physical education textbook, the modern Korean traditional music'Black Swan' I made was featured as an example. I think that it has been recognized that Korean traditional music must be reinterpreted creatively by popularizing it. I think it is my job to make it easy for young people to imagine and enjoy.
