Korean traditional music artist Hyun-jun Kang ¡°I will show the K-Korean Wave power with a friendly ¡°modern Korean music¡±¡±
[Solo Interview] Kang Hyeon-joon, CEO of Boo Ji-hwa, "Preparing for the 10th Anniversary Performance of'Bu Ji-hwa', an interesting Chinese music brand"
-Kim Hye-yeon columnist
These days, young people are not familiar with hip-hop, jazz, and dance music, but are not familiar with the delicate Korean music, ¡°gugak¡±. As the performance industry freezes in the aftermath of Corona 19, Korean traditional music and traditional music players who are neglected as an old genre that are not popular in Korea are enduring even more difficult times. Kang Hyun-jun (53), who lives as a Korean traditional music enthusiast and performing artist, is working hard to convey the colorful aspects of our sound in an easy-to-understand and familiar way. The first invention of the Chinese music brand ¡°Bujihwa,¡± which mixes traditional music with musicals and dramas, and has been putting it on the stage for more than 10 years, is to deliver Korean traditional music with the sentiment of the Korean people in a fun and easy way. Representative Kang, who is preparing for an untact (non-face-to-face) performance for the 10th anniversary of ¡°Boo Ji Hwa,¡± emphasized that ¡°the power of Korean traditional music is infinite,¡± and ¡°It will show the potential of K-Korean Wave that surpasses K-pop on the stage.¡± I met CEO Kang and heard the story of a fusion traditional Korean music called ¡°Bujihwa,¡± which is said to be immersed in the diverse and deep world of Korean music and both adults and children.
Creation of a ¡°Bujihwa¡± brand that combines traditional music + musical + drama to promote the diversity of our voices
For 10 years, it has been a local and overseas performance... Easily convey Korean traditional music containing the emotions of the Korean people

¡ªThe spread of Corona 19 seems to be causing great difficulties for artists practicing Korean traditional music. How are you doing these days?
¡ã It is difficult for everyone, not just artists. Everyone is patient and enduring. It is called Gojingamrae (ÍÈò×ÊöÕÎ), and I think that as time passes, he will overcome it well and return to the good times. However, I am worried that there are more artists who do not do Korean music than those who are supported by the government.
'Bujihwa' points out the reality of not knowing traditional music
¡ªI heard that they are preparing for the 10th anniversary performance of the great Chinese music brand'Boo Jihwa'. What does ¡®Bujihwa¡¯ mean?
¡ãBoo Ji-hwa (Üôò±ûþ) means'I don't know a picture even though I see a picture', so would I say that I don't know how to properly see the truth of a picture? This is a statement by Cho Hee-ryong, a painter of the late Joseon Dynasty, to those who could not recognize the paintings of Goram, a genius painter at the time. Goram Biography (ï£Ñ, 1825~1854) is a Namjongmun artist who painted <Gyesanpomudo> <Maehwachookdo> and <Snowgyeongsansudo>. It is said that Shinseon was a calm painting style, but it seems to point out exactly the current situation where we are unable to recognize the beauty of the traditional arts around us because of only Western music.
¡ªWhen was the Bujihwa Arts Group created?
¡ã The original performance plan was branded as ¡®Bujihwa¡¯ to popularize the traditional art, and started in June 2011. In order to be familiar with the public, modern musicals and dramas were grafted with traditional music. Until now, I have had a lot of thoughts about how to make Korean's beautiful traditional arts, dance and sound, familiar to the general public and how to inform them. Even though Korean traditional music is ours, I think it is difficult to enjoy it. Rather than a performance that only visits some Korean music enthusiasts, I thought that the audience should create a brand that is easy and fun to watch and that is sustainable. We set up a company with director Hwang Jin-gyeong, who made the general directing and script, and planned and produced the popular Korean music brand ¡°Bujihwa Performance,¡± but it has already been 10 years. They performed until'Season 20' with various repertoires.

¡ªThe popularization of Korean traditional music is a difficult homework to solve... .
¡ãFor me,'how to reach the public' is the biggest concern. In order to bring out the excitement that all Koreans have, they try to get closer to each other, and they are solving it with popular songs, casual clothes, and modern choreography. In the meantime, only 20 performances of Bujihwa and dozens of charity performances have been held in the Philippines.
And the iron rule that must be observed when performing performances is that Korean music should be the center. Although he was a deceased person now, the help of Ijo Im, a training assistant for the important intangible cultural property Seungmu, was great. In particular, the reaction to the performances of the flute master Choi Kyung-man and Seo-do folk song Yu Ji-sook, who always participates and helps with both sides, is also hot. During overseas performances, I experienced many times when foreigners shed tears over the painful and intense sound and dance even though they are Korean traditional art, but they speak different languages and do not know the contents.
After seeing Lim Ijo¡¯s ¡®Seungmu¡¯, my destiny changes
¡ªHow did you come to connect with Korean traditional music?
¡ã He majored in business administration at university, and after graduation, he made a lot of money by doing business well. However, he also suffered in the aftermath of the 1997 IMF. He became an office worker again and worked at Samsung Life Insurance and turned his eyes to Korean music, and he has been in a relationship with Korean music for 20 years.
My hometown is Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, and I accidentally saw a scene where Ijo Im, who was the artistic director of the Namwon City Korean Traditional Music Training Institute, practiced ¡®seungmu¡¯. The moment I saw the teacher's dance, my heart seemed to stop. An indescribable thrill seemed to flow through my back. As the wind lifts the constellation, the swallows cause the wind, the earth rotates and revolves in space, the long-sleeved ginseng was thrown and reaped. That was an instant, and my destiny changed that way.
¡ªIf there is a Korean classical musician who was influenced while planning the performance.
¡ã I got to know Ms. Maebang Lee at the recommendation of Ijo Im. I can never forget the two who died. There are various types of Hanyangmu and Shaman dance, but I like ¡®Seungmu¡¯. It is so beautiful that the moment when the state of silence without any movement of the dance master stops at the dance floor.
Teacher Lee Mae-bang's dance begins slowly as he puts it together in harmony with the Yeombuljangdan, but it is very exciting to see the arm movements slowly spreading the son-in-law slightly spreading it up and spreading it wide open and slowly lowering it. When I listen to the Jajintaryeong and Gutgeori Jangdan in Seungmu, I think that the ¡®return that has no choice but to go back to the root¡¯ will be a memorable memory for me as well.
¡ªWhat kind of performance he performed with traditional Korean musicians... .
¡ã I attended several performances abroad with two teachers, Maebang Lee and Ijo Im. 'How can I tell you about this wonderful beauty of our dance?' All in my mind was that thought, and in a desire to publicize it, I ¡®mixed¡¯ the sound of the game, the sound of calligraphy, and the Korean traditional music, and made various attempts. They made a variety of formats that the public would like to know abroad as well. He started adding modern choreography and powerful percussion performances to the traditional Korean Wave.
Korean traditional music ¡®fresh¡¯ dancing in casual clothes
¡ªWhat is the reason that the Bujihwa Arts Troupe is doing a lot of charity performances?
¡ã I also remember Lee-jo Im's pressure to never set up a company, saying that it is difficult for performing artists to live. However, the teacher persuaded the young cast, who was her pupils as well as herself during the first performance of Bujihwa, and paid the full amount of her performance as a scholarship to students majoring in Korean music. Teachers Dong-ok Moon and Chun-hee Lee also gave scholarships to their students.
In the second performance of Bujihwa, the ¡°Daeboreum Event,¡± one of the traditional Korean customs, was planned as a performance in conjunction with the Bujihwa performance, and it was well received by setting a sold-out record three times before.
On the one hand, the ¡°Overseas Sharing Volunteer Performance,¡± which traditional Korean musicians have been performing while considering the performance fee, has been converted into a Bujihwa performance in connection with a broadcasting station. These are the 3rd Manila performances of Bujihwa and the 4th detailed performances of Bujihwa, which were performed for low-income middle and high school teenagers in the Philippines. Many people, including the Korean American Association and the consulate, helped to promote Korean traditional music.
The Korean-style rap ¡°pansori¡± that clings to the ear is an exciting ¡°K Hallyu¡±
The role of connecting and soothing Korean traditional music... I want to soothe corona trouble with songs and dances that lead the light
¡ã On the stage of modern Korean music planned and produced by CEO Kang Hyun-jun, when a Korean traditional musician sang a folk song in their casual clothes, the inside of the Korean traditional music industry gave a pincup of ¡°no dignity,¡± but the audience reacted with deterioration. ¡ªThe most memorable performance among the Bu Ji Hwa performances is.
¡ã I think that the 5th performance of Bujihwa will be the first step in popularization by planning and producing a performance in which celebrities of <Infinite Girls> learn Korean music and perform overseas with local support such as Mr. Lee Chun-hee and Baguio Jeong Hae-cheol, the Korean president, on MBC Every1 broadcast. Since then, they have created ¡°Is it Blown by the Wind,¡± a traditional Korean music musical format that is differentiated from the existing sound drama that combines traditional Korean music, folk songs, and traditional Korean dance.
In order to give hope and courage to teenagers and students majoring in Korean music, the flow of the play was created with creative music reinterpreted based on ¡°traditional folk songs,¡± in order to differentiate it from the existing sonar-oriented Korean music. Instead of insisting on hanbok, young people sang folk songs in casual clothes, and in music, they tried new things by singing ¡°Manyo¡± in 1930.
¡ªIt is known that his relationship with Danseong Lee Chun-hee, the bearer of Gyeonggi Sound, is special.
¡ã One day, while searching for a story that could give adolescents dreams and hopes, I remembered the human cultural property teacher Lee Chun-hee, and made it a creative play rather than a basic sound play. I have a long relationship with Dansung and helped me a lot. She has always participated in the various charity shows that I do.
Regarding the ¡®Bujihwa¡¯ brand, in August 2012, he created a modern Korean classical music ¡®Bujihwa Season 6, Was It Blown by the Wind?¡¯ to deal with Dansung¡¯s life as a Korean traditional music. The success story, a traditional artist, was melted into three performances of the site.
The traditional music world is not classy, the audience is enthusiastic
¡ªWhat was the gaze of the Korean traditional music world toward fusion traditional music and modern traditional music performances?
¡ã In a word, it was stinging. The success story of Lee Chun-hee, a part of the lyrics of the planned and produced modern Korean traditional music musical folk song, ¡°I Was Blown by the Wind,¡± was a big economic challenge because I didn't have enough production costs like a national or public organization. In addition, there were glares of planning a performance with a story of a living person. Among the first attempts at various forms, when singing a folk song in casual clothes, criticism from not only the Korean classical music world, but even some teachers as'no class' was heard.
¡ªSo, how was the media reaction?
¡ãIn fact, even though it is a costume concept necessary for the scenes and expressions of the drama that portrays the poor, I heard a bit unfair criticism, but rather, the response from the general audience and the media was good. He broke the prejudice that Korean traditional music performances must wear hanbok, so it was said that the concentration of the performance was high. In the SBS liberal arts program <Culture Song Broadcasting>, the entire performance was broadcast for an hour and later increased to two hours, resulting in a total of 4 broadcasts in the same program.
¡°Inner beauty is the beauty of Korea¡±
¡ªIn 2013, the ninth performance of Bujihwa, hosted by the Korea Economic Daily, ¡°Blooming Flowers and Blooming Love,¡± was a fresh shock in many ways.
¡ã In order to break the prejudice that ¡°traditional Korean music is boring,¡± it was made into a ¡°modern Korean traditional music curl¡± that combines popular songs and modern choreography with traditional art. In order to be familiar with the public, modern musicals and dramas were grafted with traditional music. A variety of performers, from human cultural properties to young Korean musicians, made a reinterpretation of traditional Korean music. All seats were sold out.
¡ªIt wasn't just cursing, it was also well received, but this is the beginning of'Inalchi Band' these days.
¡ã At the time, it was a scene and an attempt that we have not seen before and showed off a dance that adopted the female group Wonder Girls' ¡®Nobody¡¯ in casual clothes instead of Hanbok. Although I was cursed in the traditional Korean music world, the audience liked it very much. It was well-received and badly criticized, but it was also a fun performance. I think this collaboration was a little quicker.
Listen to Inalchi Band¡¯s ¡°Beom Coming Down¡±, which has become a hot topic these days. The rhythm is fast, but how close it is to your ears. Our generation lives with children who have fallen into the rapid fire rap of Jay-Z. However, in this day's band, there is a Korean-style rap that can't even give out a business card. It is also pansori. Modern pansori is placed on restrained drums and bass guitars, and it is harmonized with the amazing dance to give you a glimpse. The screaming vocals are traditional artists who have performed pansori for over 20 years. YouTube views exceeded 300 million views. I think that's'K Hallyu'. K-Korean Wave has no time to be bored. I want to convey my inner beauty to our tunes in an exciting way.

Planning for ¡°K Hallyu¡± Korean traditional music that is comparable to K-pop
¡ªIf you want to create a ball commemorating the 10th anniversary of Bujihwa in the future.
¡ã These days, trot is also popular, and I think it is a time when all genres of music are consumed with a lot of personality. These days, the various attempts and collaborations of young Korean traditional musicians are rather loved by the public. At this time, we would like to plan the traditional Korean music as ¡°K Hallyu,¡± which is comparable to K-pop, and show it to the world. Until the corona is over, I think the method is also possible for untact (non-face-to-face) performances.
In 2015, in a 6th grade elementary school physical education textbook, the modern Korean traditional music'Black Swan' I made was featured as an example. I think that it has been recognized that Korean traditional music must be reinterpreted creatively by popularizing it. I think it is my job to make it easy for young people to imagine and enjoy. There are only a few days left for the New Year's Day, and this New Year's Day, we are going to present an Untact performance that contains the desperate desire to defeat Corona 19. I prayed to the God of Heaven and Earth to help me overcome this difficulty.

¡ªFinally, what if there is a secret of our traditional art crossing the corona era?
¡ã In January 2011, the work was taken by Choi Jae-young, a photographer from JoongAng Ilbo, and co-directed the 5th anniversary photo exhibition of Nam June Paik in Insa-dong, Seoul, and performed a good performance. In the photo, Nam June Paik wore a suit, a shade, and a hanbok, and he was soothing the spirits of the East and the West by performing a piano ritual in memory of the German painter Joseph Boyce. The bowl and the bowl were harmonized, and the guts and janggu, the gong and the drum, and the flute rang as a gut that day.
Korean traditional music has always played a role in connecting, healing, and mediating someone. These days life and death come and go. Songs and dances that lead the world's brightest are not the secret to calling out our deity.
