브레이크뉴스는 지난 2020년 8월29일자부터 '구글번역'(Google Translate)을 이용한 기사-글을 영문으로 변역, 게재-보도해왔습니다. 한국어 인터넷 신문의 최초 시도였습니다. 이 글은 그 과정, 4개월째 지속해온 과정에서 느낀 바를 보고하는 내용입니다.
이제 세계는 다양한 콘텐츠 생산의 대결장(對決場)으로 바뀌었습니다. 지구상에 존재하는 콘텐츠 가운데, 콘텐츠가 제작되어 저장되어 있는, 모든 콘텐츠 가운데 영문 콘텐츠를 50% 이상으로 가정한다면, 한글로 제작되어 있는 총 콘텐츠의 량(量)은 과연 얼마나 될까요? 미미할 것으로 단정합니다.
그러하니, 대한민국이 국제적인 뉴스-정보전에서 선진국으로 도약하려면, 영문 콘테츠의 다량 생산이 불가피해졌습니다. 또한 대한민국의 영향력을 높이려면 영문 스토리 만들기 캠페인이 필요합니다.
원래, 뉴스나 정보의 수효가 늘어나면 자연스럽게 스토리(story)가 만들어질 수 있습니다. 뉴스에는 반드시 뉴스스토리(news story)가 있습니다. 대한민국에서 생산된 대다수의 뉴스나 정보가 영문으로 번역되어 구글 등 유명 포털 속에 안장(安藏) 된다면, 세계인들의 선(先) 검색대상이 될 것이고, 이로 인하여 대한민국이 정보의 선진 국가로 변환(變換)될 수 있다고 봅니다. 이때, 국제화된 대한민국의 뉴스-정보 소토리가 만들어지는 것입니다. 이로 인하여, 대한민국의 우수한 문화국가 이미지 스토리가 만들어 졌으면 하는 바람입니다.
한글로 생산된 뉴스나 정보를 영문화(英文化)함은 국격(國格)을 높이는 일일 수 있습니다. 한글로 제작된 콘텐츠를 영문으로 번역해내는 일은 대한민국의 국격을 높이는 일이 될 것이기 때문입니다.
필자는 그러한 의미에서 한글로 된 뉴스-정보-작품, 또는 스토리들을 영어로 바꾸어 나가자는 주장을 폅니다. 또한 그런 취지에서 브레이크뉴스가 생산한 뉴스나 글의 영문화, '구글번역'을 이용한 영문을 그 동안 게재-보도해온 것입니다.
구글이 '구글번역' 서비스(Google Translate) 사업을 시작한 것은 지난 2006년으로 거슬러 올라갑니다. '구글번역'은 지난 15년 간 다양한 언어의 번역 사업을 발전시켜 왔습니다. 지난 2017년 통계에 따르면, 그때 이미 200명 이상의 개발자들이 번역사업에 참여하고 있었습니다. 독일 출신 마이크 슈스터(Mike Schuster)가 '구글번역'의 최고 책임자로 일해 왔습니다. '구글번역'은 그때부터 103개 언어의 번역작업을 지속적으로 추진해오고 있다고 합니다. '구글번역'의 품질향상은 인공신경망을 기반으로 한 번역기술을 받아들이면서부터 획기적인 발전이 가능해졌다고 합니다, 이 역시 ‘구글번역’ 팀의 개가(開架) 입니다.
마이크 슈스터에 따르면, 한글번역의 품질이 중국어를 앞서 있다고 합니다. 조선비즈 2017년 9월26일자는 마이크 슈스터와(Mike Schuster)의 인터뷰를 기사화 했습니다. 이 기사에서 마이크 슈스터는 2006년부터 구글에서 언어인식, 머신러닝, 신경망 분야 연구개발을 맡았다고 소개했습니다, 구글의 번역 서비스인 ‘구글 트랜슬레이트(Google Translate)’를 이끌며 “신경망과 머신러닝을 적용한 번역 기술 개발을 주도했다”고 보도 했습니다.
이 신문의 보도에 따르면, 마이크 슈스터는 “언어는 단순히 도구가 아니라 그 이상의 것”이라고 강조하면서 “언어를 학습하는 것 자체가 도구를 쓰는 게 아니라 소통하고 내 자신의 생각을 정리하고, 언어가 상징하는 문화를 소화하는 것이기 때문에 꼭 필요하다”고 말했습니다. 그는 '구글번역'의 역할에 대해서는 “앞으로 인류 발전에 이바지할 수 있을 것”이라면서 “인류는 소통의 어려움 때문에 사람 사이의 혐오나 오해를 만들어 왔다. 100년 전 국가 단위 소통이 어려웠던 것을 생각하면 구글이 제공하는 번역 서비스가 인류 소통 역량 향상에 도움을 줄 수 있다는 점이 좋다”고 말했습니다. '구글번역'팀의 업적은, 전망하건데 인류 역사에 길이 빛날 것입니다. 필자는 ‘구글번역’ 팀에게 노벨상을 줄만한 가치가 있다고 주장한바 있습니다.
그러함에도, '구글번역'의 한계는 엄연하게 존재합니다. 언어의 다름을 번역만으로 완벽하게 처리할 수가 없기 때문입니다. 변역 또는 통역이란, 오역(誤譯)이 존재할 수 있음을 전제로 합니다. '구글번역' 역시 소통 효율(效率)을 높여 나가는 정도로 이해하면 될 것입니다.
여기에서 아주 중요한 점은 한글 콘텐츠 생산자들이나 한글 사용자들이 '구글번역'을 많이 이용하면, 한글번역의 품질 수준을 높여갈 수 있다는 것입니다.
증산계 민족종교의 창시자인 강일순(姜一淳, 1871~1909) 교조(敎祖)는 우리민족이 만든 국가가 “상등국(上等國)이 된다”는 예언을 했습니다. 대순진리회의 경전인 전경에는 “상제께서 매양 뱃소리를 내시기에 종도들이 그 연유를 여쭈니 대답하여 말씀하시기를 '우리나라를 상등국으로 만들기 위해 서양 신명을 불러와야 할지니 이제 배에 실어오는 화물표에 따라 넘어오게 됨으로 그러하노라.'고 하셨도다.(예시 29절)"고 기록되어 있습니다. 대한민국의 ”대한민국이 상등국이 된다“는 강증산의 예언이 이룩되는 주요한 시기에 살고 있습니다. 필자는 우리나라가 이런 국가를 만들기 위해서는 한글로 된 콘텐츠를 먼저 영문화 하는 일이 선행(先行)되어야 할 것이라고 주장합니다.

경제-문화-기술의 난제들을 격파하고 선진국가-선도국가로 가려면 어떻게 해야 될까요? 국제적인 뉴스-정보전에서 승리(勝利), 첨단 기술-문화 선진국으로 도약하려면, 영문 콘테츠의 다량 생산이 불가피해졌습니다. 이를 위해 '구글번역'을 이용한 영문코텐츠 제작-유통을 적극 권고합니다. 정부기관-지방자치단체-학술기관-작가들의 참여도 권유합니다.
