브레이크뉴스 박동제 기자= 대한민국 대표 ‘믿고 보는 배우’ 엄지원이 최근 인기리에 종영한 ‘산후조리원’을 통해 다시 한번 빛나는 열연을 선보였다.
엄지원은 지난 24일 종영한 tvN 드라마 ‘산후조리원’(연출 박수원, 극본 김지수, 제작 tvN·래몽래인, 8부작)에서 회사에서는 최연소 임원이지만 병원에서는 최고령 산모인 오현진 역을 맡아, 출산과 육아를 통한 여성의 진정한 성장기를 보여줬다. 특히 엄지원은 끝없이 넘나드는 감정의 파고 속 유연한 완급조절 열연을 선보여 드라마가 방송되는 내내 뜨거운 찬사를 이끌어냈다.
엄지원을 비롯해 박하선, 장혜진, 최리, 임화영, 최수민, 이세랑, 최자혜, 김윤정, 윤박, 정성일, 남윤수, 무진성, 김민철 등 많은 배우들이 열연을 펼친 ‘산후조리원’은 회사에서는 최연소 임원, 병원에서는 최고령 산모 현진이 재난 같은 출산과 조난급 산후조리원 적응기를 거치며 조리원 동기들과 성장해 나가는 격정 출산 느와르를 담아냈다.
‘산후조리원’ 마지막회인 8회 시청률은 수도권 가구 기준 평균 4.8%, 최고 6.7%, 전국 기준 평균 4.2%, 최고 5.6%를 기록했고, 이는 자체 최고 시청률을 경신한 기록으로 완벽한 피날레를 장식했다. tvN 타깃인 남녀 2049 시청률에서도 수도권 기준 평균 3.2%, 최고 3.8%, 전국 기준 평균 2.9%, 최고 3.6%를 기록, 케이블과 종편 채널을 포함한 동시간대 1위의 자리를 굳건히 지켜내며 완벽한 끝맺음을 지었다.
지난 2000년 영화 <찍히면 죽는다>로 데뷔한 엄지원은 이후 영화 <오버 더 레인보우>, <똥개>, <주홍글씨>, <극장전>, <스카우트>, <그림자 살인>, <아직도 결혼하고 싶은 여자>, <불량남녀>, <페스티발>, <박수건달>, <소원>, <경성학교: 사라진 소녀들>, <더 폰>, <미씽: 사라진 여자>, <마스터>, <기묘한 가족>, 드라마 ‘황금마차’, ‘폭풍 속으로’, ‘매직’, ‘온에어’, ‘싸인’, ‘세 번 결혼하는 여자’, ‘봄이 오나 봄’ 등 장르불문 다양한 작품에 출연하며 명실고공히 최고의 여배우로 자리매김해왔다.
특히 엄지원은 지난 3월, 폭발적인 열연을 선보여 관심을 모았던 화제작 tvN 드라마 ‘방법’에 이어 많은 시청자들의 공감을 자아낸 이번 ‘산후조리원’까지 연이어 히트시키며 진정한 ‘흥행퀸’으로 거듭났다.
엄지원은 최근 코로나19(신종코로나바이러스감염증)에 따른 사회적 거리두기 2단계 격상으로 인해 서면으로 진행된 <브레이크뉴스>와의 ‘산후조리원’ 종영 인터뷰를 통해 작품에 대한 남다른 애정부터, 연기 호평, 증량투혼, 배우들과의 케미, 차기작까지 다양한 이야기를 전했다. 남녀노소 누구나 사랑하는 ‘믿보배’ 엄지원의 끝없는 매력 속으로 빠져보는 건 어떨까.
-다음은 엄지원과의 일문일답.

-‘산후조리원’으로 코믹 멜로 액션까지 모두 소화, 또 하나의 ‘인생캐’를 경신하며 호평을 받았다. 종영 소감은? 또 이런 뜨거운 반응을 예상했는지.
▶ 이렇게까지 뜨거운 반응은 전혀 예상하지 못했다. 동 시대에 살고 있는 평범한 한 여자의 성장이야기라는 관점에서 내가 느꼈던 것들을 이야기할 수 있는 장이 마련돼 기쁘고, 함께 울고 웃어 주고, 공감해주고 응원해 줘서 너무 감사하다. 모든 배우, 스태프들이 애틋한 마음으로 촬영에 임했다. 작품을 끝내면 “잘 끝났다” 라는 생각이 드는 작품도 있지만 이번 작품을 끝내고 “우리도 다시 모일 수 있을까?” 라는 아쉬운 마음이 들었다.
-수많은 맘 카페 회원은 물론 남성들도 공감하는 드라마로 화제가 됐다. 반응을 예상했나, 시청자들이 드라마를 좋아한 이유가 무엇이라고 보는지, 또 본인 스스로는 어떤 부분이 가장 공감이 갔나.
▶ 바로 내 옆에 그리고 내 삶 속에 있는 이야기지만, 가까이에 있기 때문에 미처 들여다보지 못했던 이야기이기 때문에 친근하게 느끼신 것 같다. “저거 내 이야기인데?” 라는 생각 때문에 좋아해주지 않으셨나 생각이 든다. 촬영하면서 출산이나 육아에 경험이 없으신 분들도 좋아해 주실까 우려도 있었지만, 특히 실제 경험이 있으신 분들의 공감을 얻어낼 수 있을지 걱정을 많이 했다. 감사하게도 많이 사랑해줘서 기쁘다.
-가장 기억에 남는 시청자들 반응과, 시청자들이 붙여준 별명 중 가장 마음에 드는 게 무엇인지.
▶ 사실 촬영스케줄로 댓글들을 많이 살피진 못했다. “진짜 산모 같았다”, “출산했을 때가 생각난다” 등 실제 경험이 떠오른다는 반응들이 아무래도 기억에 남는다. 출산 시 내가 느꼈던 감정을 똑같이 표현해줘서 고맙다는 반응들을 볼 때 마치 나의 이야기처럼 생각해주는 것 같아서 좋았다.
-‘산후조리원’은 오직 출산을 중심으로 여성의 감정 변화부터 워킹 맘, 모성애 등을 중심으로 지금까지 없었던 소재를 다뤘다. 처음 작품을 접했을 때는 어떤 느낌이 들었나.
▶ ‘산후조리원’ 대본을 읽었을 때 너무 재미있어서 하고 싶다는 생각을 했다. 조리원이라는 한정된 공간 속 한정된 사람들이 드라마틱한 감정들을 겪어내는 게 마음에 들었고, 출산을 통해 한 순간에 최연소 상무에서 최고령 산모 로 사회적 위치가 확 대변되는 설정이 좋았다. 그 중 가장 좋았던 건 시의성을 가지며 코미디적 요소를 담고 있는 작품들을 하고 싶었는데, 완성도가 높은 작품이라 더욱 끌렸다.
또 1부 저승사자 신을 읽고 욕심이 났다. 아이를 낳다가 생사의 경계에 놓이지만 불굴의 의지로 돌아오는 모습이 캐릭터를 너무 잘 보여주는 것 같았다. 내게 “이렇게 만들어보면 좋겠다” 키를 쥐어 줬던 장면이었다. 이를 통해 잘 할 수 있다는 자신이 생기기도 했다.
-전작 ‘방법’과 너무나 다른 연기 변신이다. 주어진 역할에 맞게 바로 변신하는 비결이 있다면.
▶ 연기 변신이라기보다, 작품 속 역할에 맞게 연기했다. ‘방법’ 같은 경우 차갑고, 지적인 프레임 안에서 절제해야 하는 부분들이 있어서 약간의 답답함이 있었다. 하지만 ‘산후조리원’ 현진의 경우 드라마틱한 감정들을 가지고 있기도 하면서 정극과 코미디를 넘나들며 중간중간 상상신들로 다양하게 표현할 수 있다는 지점이 재미있었다.
나의 이야기가 될 수 있는 이야기였기 때문에 ‘우리 모두의 이야기로 만들어 가보자’ 라는 생각을 했다. 배우로서 항상 연기를 하면서 조금 더 보여주고 싶은데 현진이는 그런 부분들이 가능했다. 그래서 ‘산후조리원’ 촬영을 하고 지금 <방법> 영화 촬영에도 연기적으로 도움이 된 것 같다. 드라마 ‘방법’과 같은 인물이지만 조금 더 편안하게 리액션하고 연기하게 됐다.
-캐릭터 오현진 캐릭터를 실감나게 표현하기 위해서 욕심을 가지고 중점을 둔 부분이 무엇인가.
▶ 집, 회사, 조리원에서 각기 다른 모습을 보여드리고 싶었다. 회상(패러디)신 같은 경우 아무래도 재미있게 쓰여져 있었기 때문에 드라마틱하게 표현을 해야겠다는 생각을 했고, 그 안에서 무엇보다 공감이 중요하다고 생각했다. 캐릭터 빌드 업의 문제 라기보다 내가 느낀 감정을 느낀 그대로 시청자들이 느끼게끔 표현하고 싶었다.
-‘나’에 집중하는 현진에게도 공감했을 거 같은데, 싱크로율은.
▶ 현진이가 곧 ‘나’ 라고 생각한다. 지금까지 한 작품들 중 싱크로율이 가장 높지 않았나.(웃음) 그만큼 공감이 많이 갔고, 내 안에 있는 현진 같은 모습들을 최대한 많이 끌어내서 보여주려고 했다. 특히 일하고 육아에 있어서 갈등하는 현진이 같은 경우 진짜 나를 표현하려고 노력했다.
-증량투혼에 특수분장까지 하면서 열연을 펼쳤다. 어려웠던 장면이 있다면.
▶ 나에게 증량이 크게 어려운 일이 아니었는데, 많은 분들이 관심을 가져 줘서 놀랐다. 가장 어려웠다기보다 가장 많은 공을 들였던 장면은 아무래도 1부였다. 그 중 출산신이 가장 힘들었다. 지금까지 했던 연기들은 대게 보는 사람이 겪어보지 않은 이야기를 하는 경우가 많았지만 현진 같은 경우 많은 분들이 경험을 하셨던 과정을 연기하는 것이었기 때문에 보는 분들이 온전히 몰입할 수 있도록 연기하는 것이 무엇보다 중요했다.
-드라마 한 장면을 위해 4kg 증량을 했다고 들었는데 본인의 판단이었는지. 완성된 화면을 보면서는 보람을 느꼈나.
▶ 산모 같아 보이기 위해 어느정도 살을 찌우는 것은 필요하다고 생각했다. 보는 사람들이 ‘진짜구나’ 라고 느끼기 위한 약간의 노력이었다. 많은 분들이 리얼하다고 해줘서 만족스러웠다. 영화 촬영 등 스케줄을 소화하며 살은 자연스럽게 빠졌다.(웃음)

-연기자가 경험을 해본 역할만 하는 건 아니지만 실제로는 경험이 없는 임신, 출산과 육아 연기를 어떻게 준비했는지 참고한 것이나 지인들에게 조언을 들었는지.
▶ 실제 대본에 ‘현진이 불편해 잠을 못 이루고 뒤척인다’ 라는 지문이 있었다. 지문 그대로 불편한 듯 연기할 수 있었지만, 경험을 해본 지인들에게 어디가 불편한지, 어디가 아픈 건지 구체적으로 물어봤다. 자문을 구했던 게 현장에서 연기할 때 도움이 됐다. 출산 신 같은 경우 적나라하게 나오진 않지만 다큐멘터리를 참고하기도 했다. 가장 우려했던 임신, 출산을 경험하신 시청자분들이 공감해 주셔서 마음이 놓였다.
-유튜브 등을 통해 동료 배우들과 시장에 놀러가는 등 친분을 보여줬다. 유난히 여성 배우, 스태프가 많은 현장이었을 듯한데, 현장 분위기는 어땠나.
▶ 모든 배우, 스태프들이 애정을 가지고 촬영에 임했기 때문에 촬영현장에서 분위기는 당연히 좋았다. 물론 장혜진 선배님도 계셨지만, 현진의 이야기로 문을 열고 극을 끌어 가기 때문에 나의 역할이 중요하다고 생각했다. 촬영에 들어가기 전 배우들끼리 프라이빗 영화관을 빌려 다같이 영화를 보고 밥을 먹기도 하면서 사석에서 시간들을 많이 가졌다.
덕분에 배우들과 자연스럽게 친해질 수 있었고, 현장에서도 친근한 분위기가 나올 수 있었다. 7화같은 경우 배우들끼리 모여서 방송을 같이 보기도 했다. 이 작품의 리더로서 현장에서 배우들이 편하게 연기할 수 있도록 애드립도 마음껏 치라고 이야기해주며 분위기를 이끌어갔다.
-8부작이라는 짧은 작품을 모두 마치고 다시 돌아봤을 때 만족하는지. 가장 좋았던 것과 아쉬웠던 부분이 있다면 무엇인가.
▶ 8부작은 처음이었다. 기존의 미니시리즈보단 짧다 보니 아쉬운 점이 많다. 하지만 방송이 시작하니까 너무 빨리 끝나버려서 아쉬움이 컸다. 반면 배우로서 체력적으로 16부작 촬영 때보다 덜 힘들었던 것 같고, 드라마가 짧은 만큼 전개가 지루하지 않게 진행된다는 점도 좋은 것 같다.
-제작발표회에서 말했 듯 아직 출산과 육아 경험은 없다. 어머니(손숙 분)의 사랑이나 주변 산모들과의 우정, 관계도 두드러졌다. 이번 드라마를 통해 간접적으로 접하면서 특별히 얻은 깨달음이나 새롭게 배우게 되신 점이 있다면.
▶ 내가 엄마가 된다면 처음이지만 생소하게 느껴지지 않고, 경험했던 사람처럼 느껴질 것 같다. 실제로 경험해 보진 못했지만 육체적인 고통을 제외한 감정적인 면에서 두번째 출산을 하는 것처럼 덜 낯설고, 편안하게 받아 드릴 수 있을 것 같다.
-은정 역의 박하선, 혜숙 역의 장혜진, 루다 역의 최리, 윤지 역의 임화영 등 배우 들과의 호흡은 잘 맞았는지, 기억에 남는 촬영 에피소드가 있다면.
▶ 각자의 다른 매력과 장점이 있었다. 장혜진 선배 같은 경우 소년 같은 털털함, 개구장이 같은 면이 있었고, 박하선 배우는 육아경험이 있어서 그런지 배우들에게 “잘한다”, “예쁘다” 등 기분 좋은 칭찬을 잘해줬다. 최리 배우는 너무 사랑스럽고, 순수하고 재능이 있는 친구다. 임화영 배우는 내공이 있는 좋은 배우고, 좋은 사람이었다. 늘 촬영장에 가면 여자친구들끼리 수다 떠는 편안한 느낌이 들었다.
촬영을 하기 전 출산과 육아 경험이 있는 배우들과 그렇지 않은 배우들이 머리를 맞대고 고민을 많이 했다. 결국은 지금의 나의 이야기, 내 주변 친구들의 이야기, 우리의 이야기를 하자라는 결론을 내고 촬영에 임했다. 대화를 통해 방향을 찾아가고 고민하는 과정이 재미있었다.
-이번 작품을 통해 필사적이고 진한 모성애 연기는 물론, 엄마(손숙 분)과의 현실 모녀 연기를 펼쳤는데, 기억에 남는 촬영 에피소드가 있다면.
▶ 엄마와의 이야기는 경험해보지 않았어도 읽으면 눈물이 뚝뚝 떨어지는 이야기였다. 내 마음을 많이 움직였고, 잘 표현하고 싶었다. 전형적인 모녀연기가 아닌 진짜 엄마한테 떼쓰고 어리광 피우는 모습들을 표현하고 싶었다.
모든 신들이 다 좋았고, 손숙 선생님이 엄마같이 제가 하는 연기를 다 받아 주셔서 너무 감사했다. 손숙 선생님도 아직까지 “손숙 엄마야~” 라고 불러 주시고 “올해 가장 잘한 일은 너를 딸로 맞은 거야” 라고 말씀해 주시며 친 엄마처럼 따뜻하게 대해 주셨다.

-남편 김도윤 역을 맡은 배우 윤박과 육아는 부부가 함께 하는 거라는 메시지를 보여주는 것 같았다. 연기 호흡은 어땠나.
▶ 8부작으로 비교적 짧은 작품이다 보니까 처음에 알콩달콩한 부부연기가 낯간지럽기도 했지만, 윤박 배우도 워낙 코미디를 잘하고 욕심이 많아서 애드립도 많이 했던 기억이 난다. 실제 윤박이라는 사람이 도윤이 같은 순수한면을 가지고 있었다. 그래서 더 좋은 케미가 나오지 않았나 싶다. 가슴 마사지나, 수유하는 신이 글로 쓰여져 있을 때 어떻게 구현시킬 지 혹 보는 분들이 불편해 하지 않으실 까 걱정을 많이 했는데 감독님이 고민을 많이 하신 흔적이 느껴졌다.
-‘딱풀이’ 목소리를 실감나게 연기한 안 선생 역을 맡은 차태현 모친 배우 최수민과의 촬영 에피소드가 있다면.
▶ 워낙 성우로서는 최고의 위치에 있으고 프로페셔널한 분이지만 정극 연기를 처음 하다보니, 동선이나 앵글의 위치 시선처리 부분에서 현장에서 많이 물어봤다. 오랜 시간 이어지니 힘드실 법한데 힘든 내색 하나 없이 즐겁게 촬영에 임하는 모습이 기억에 남는다. 선생님의 태도와 열정을 배우고 싶었다.
-차태현, 정상훈, 이준혁, 정문성, 강홍석, 소주연, 박시연 등 많은 특별 출연 배우들이 있었다. 특히 박시연에 대해서는 SNS로 칭찬을 하기도 했는데, 특별출연 한 배우들과 어떤 에피소드가 있었나.
▶ 이번 작품에 유독 많은 배우분들이 특별출연을 해줘서 극이 더 풍성해진 것 같다. 특히 정문성 배우는 전 작인 ‘방법’에서 남편 역으로 호흡을 맞췄었는데 다른 배우의 와이프가 돼 아이를 받아주는 산부인과 의사로 출연해 신선했다. 정문성 배우가 현장에서 “너무 하는거 아니에요 여보? 내가 애를 받아 주다니” 라고 장난도 치며 재미있게 촬영했다. 당시 코로나19 이슈로 촬영 로케가 변동이 많아서 한 장면임에도 불구, 5번이나 현장에 나와서 고생해줘서 고마웠다.
-극 중 다양한 작품을 패러디 했는데요. <설국열차>, <로마의 휴일> 무술 고수 등 다양한 분장을 하며 극의 재미를 더했다. 기억에 남는 패러디 장면과 관련된 촬영 에피소드가 있나.
▶ 다양한 패러디 장면이 있었지만 무협신이 기억에 남는다. 너무 재미있게 촬영했고, 촬영 전 이미지화 시키는 과정에서 박하선 배우랑 ‘와호장룡’이나 ‘협녀’의 시안을 직접 들고 감독님을 찾아갔었다. 어떻게 찍으면 멋있을까 고민을 많이 했다. 또 설국열차신도 장혜진 선배와 재미있게 촬영했던 기억이 있다.
-워킹맘 오현진의 룩도 화제가 됐는데. 패션, 메이크업에 포인트를 둔 부분은 무엇이고, 본인의 아이디어도 반영됐는지.
▶ 늘 작품에 들어가기 전에 고민하는 작업이고 의견을 많이 내는 편이다. 매 작품 돋보이지 않게, 인물에 맞게 인물이 입을 법한, 할 법한 옷과 메이크업을 고민한다. 스타일리스트와 회의 끝에 회사에서 현진은 블랙 앤 화이트 의상과 레드 립으로 포인트를 줬고, 조리원에서의 현진은 최대한 내추럴함을 살리려고 했다.
-‘산후조리원’ 속 시청자들의 눈시울을 붉힌 명대사들이 많았다. 드라마 속 대사 중 가장 기억에 남는 대사와 그 이유는 무엇인가.
▶ 유독 현진은 내레이션이 많았었다. 7부에서 아이를 떠나보내며 슬퍼하는 임화영 배우의 신에서 “딱풀이는 엄마가 지어준 고운 이름(건우)을 입고 떠났다” 라는 현진의 내레이션이 있었는데 가슴이 먹먹 해져서 담담하게 읽어 내기가 힘들었던 기억이 난다. 또 이준혁 선배님이 도윤에게 “와이프에게 가까이 가지도 멀리 가지도 말아라” 라는 대사가 재미있었다.
-작품 하면서 엄마에 대해서도 생각이 났을 것 같은데, 어떤 딸이었고, 어머니는 어떤 분이었나.
▶‘산후조리원’이라는 작품을 촬영하면서 엄마 생각이 났다. 엄마도 현진이 엄마처럼 딸이 하는 일과 커리어 존중해주는 분이시다. 다만 엄마도 이제는 연세가 있어서 신체가 여기저기 좋지 않아 마음이 아프다.
-앞으로 어떤 엄마가 되고 싶은지.
▶ 내가 만약 엄마가 된다면 일과 워킹맘 현진이 같지 않았을까 생각이 든다. 일과 육아를 병행하는 워킹맘 들에게 장혜진 선배의 대사처럼 “좋은 엄마가 완벽한 게 아니다. 이기적인 게 아니다. 엄마가 행복해야 아이가 행복하다” 라는 말을 해주고 싶다. 내가 행복해야 행복한 에너지를 줄 수 있듯 본인이 선택의 폭이 가장 중요한 거니까.
-‘산후조리원’ 결말에 많은 시청자들이 감동을 받았다는 의견이 많다. 결말에 만족하나.
▶ 열린 결말이었지만, 10부작이었으면 더 좋지 않았을까 하는 약간의 아쉬움이 있었다.(웃음) 현진이는 ‘산후조리원’ 마지막회에도 나왔듯 현진의 길을 가지 않을까 싶다. 일을 하며 놓친 부분들은 남편 도윤이 챙겨주고 부족한 정보들과 육아고민들은 조리원동기들을 통해 조언을 구하고 살아갈 것 같다.

-배우들의 연기부터 드라마 내용 전반적으로 호평을 받았고, 시즌2가 제작된다면 출연하고 싶다고 했다. 배우, 스태프들과 이야기 나눈 적은 없는지, 만약에 돌아온다면 ‘산후조리원’이 아닌 어린이집, 유치원 등 어떤 소재로 돌아올 수 있을지 그 안에 현진은 어떤 모습일지 궁금하다.
▶ 이번 작품에서도 그랬듯 만약 ‘산후조리원’ 시즌2가 제작된다면 어떤 소재이던 경험한 사람들만 공감하는 이야기가 아닌 모두가 공감할 만한 코드를 찾아내는 것이 숙제인 것 같다. 행운이 주어진다면 시즌2를 통해 시청자분들을 다시 한번 싶다는 바람이 있다.
-그동안 주로 검사 등 커리어 우먼이나 전문직, 강한 캐릭터를 연기했는데 이번에 연기 변신을 제대로 했다. 엄지원에게 ‘산후조리원’이 갖는 의미는 무엇인가.
▶ 기존의 코미디가 아닌 스릴러, 느와르 등 다양한 장르적 재미가 있는 복합 코미디여서 좋았다. “시의성 있는 작품으로도 코미디를 풀 수 있다” 라는 생각을 했다. 처음에는 해보고 시작한 작품이지만, 해냈기 때문에 다음 단계로 갈 수 있는 가능성이 생겼다. 내게 있어서 이 작품은 또 다른 기회가 생긴 의미 있는 작품이다.
-작품을 고르는 본인 만의 기준이 있다면.
▶ 책임감보단 사명감이 있다. 배우로서 할 수 있는 이야기를 많이 하면 좋겠다는 생각이 있었다. 작품을 선택할 땐 내가 하고 싶은가 하고 싶지 않은가 가 제일 중요한 것 같다. “내가 느끼고 있는 걸 하면 되겠다” 라는 생각이 늘 있다.
여성이 극을 끌어 나가는 이야기들이 생긴 게 정말 몇 년 되지 않았다. 그 안에서 조금은 다른 거, 주체적인 걸 하려고 노력했던 것 같다. 중 늘 새롭고 재미있는 장르에 대한 갈증이 있기 때문에 어느 쪽이든 방향이 맞는 작품을 만나면 하려고 한다.
