Published the final edition of the series “Geniuses Loved by the City” by Jo Sung-Kwan Cho

“From Vienna to Seoul, the city raised genius and the genius lit the city!”

-Reporter Park Jeong-dae

“The Geniuses of Seoul Loved by Baek Seok, Yun Dong-ju, Park Su-geun, Lee Byeong-cheol, and Jung Ju-young” by Jo Sung-kwan (publisher = Daelim Yeol) was published. The final edition of Jo's “Geniuses Loved by the City” series was published.

In 15 years after the release of ``Geniuses Loved by Bean'' in 2005, the tenth and final edition, ``Geniuses Loved by Seoul,'' marks the end of the series. The'Geniuses Loved by the City' series is a culture that explores the places where geniuses were born and worked from Vienna, Austria, Prague, London, New York through Petersburg, Paris, Germany, Tokyo, and Seoul, looking into their lives and art world. Art travel book.

The publisher said, “The author has met 54 geniuses in nine cities over 15 years. What is'genius'? The author defines genius as "a person whose achievements have benefited and enriched the community and society materially and mentally." Of the 54 geniuses, artists and writers are the most numerous, but sometimes there are politicians, businesswomen, designers and popular singers. It simply means that you are not a highly intelligent person. Anyone who has lived fiercely in their respective fields and made great achievements and greatly influenced their descendants will be able to fall into the category of geniuses. The face of the city and genius is so gorgeous. Klimt and Freud in Vienna, Kafka in Prague, Chaplin in London, Andy Warhol and Nam June Paik in New York, Dostoevsky in Petersburg, Victor Hugo and Chanel in Paris, Goethe in Germany, Soseki Natsume in Tokyo, and Soo-geun Baek and Park in Seoul. Cities are all beautiful and historic, and geniuses excite us just by name. But did they have a flat and happy life? The lives of geniuses were never happy or glorious because they were more successful in later generations than in their times. Sometimes he had to suffer from poverty and envy, criticism and criticism, disease and solitude. Through this series, we can easily read their pain and joy, glory and frustration, and their intense struggle for art that have been handed down deep in their bones.” “The city is evaluated as pioneering a new genre in the history of Korean intellectuals. The'Loved Geniuses' series is a small story of the characters, a historical book, and a record of their struggles. It was a long campaign over 15 years. Not only does it faithfully restore the world and lives of geniuses, but it also provides the fun of reading as hidden private life and interesting episodes hide like spices. It is full of beautiful photos and valuable material photos taken by the author while on a pilgrimage throughout the city, enhancing the value of the book.”

In the introduction, the author said, “The Geniuses Loved by Seoul” looked into the city of Seoul through five geniuses who were active in Seoul. Poet Baek Seok of <Me and Natasha and the White Donkey>, Yun Dong-ju, the poet most loved by Koreans, Park Soo-geun, the painter of Na Mok, Lee Byung-cheol, founder of Samsung Group, and Jung Ju-young, the modern mythology. 'When I selected 5 people, I saw two things in common that I didn't think of. All of these were born in the 1910s, and no one was born in Seoul. They spent their childhood in colonies and lived in times of war, chaos, and poverty. Modern Korean history is embedded in the rings of their lives. (……) The five members of the “Seoul edition” appeared at the same time at the same time as if they had made an appointment and, after completing their roles, buried their names in history. Baek Suk and Yun Dong-joo were the first generation of poets to embrace modern civilization, and they sublimated the pain of the times with our own language. Park Soo-geun created an original art world that is nowhere to be found through self-taught. Lee Byung-cheol and Jung Ju-young, as good-intentioned rivals, led the Korean economy by exchanging influences from each other.”

Through this book, you can take a closer look at the lives of dramatic geniuses, and you can fully feel the face of Seoul, which preserves freedom and romance in various places such as Seochon alleys, Myeong-dong, Deoksugung stone wall roads, and Gilsangsa temples where the traces of geniuses reside. .

Seoul, Seoul, and Seoul of Baek Seok, Yun Dong-ju, Park Soo-geun, Lee Byeong-cheol, and Jung Ju-young!

Baek Seok, a poet, novelist, translator and essayist. He visits the boarding house and Gilsangsa Temple in Tongui-dong, Jongno-gu, where he stayed while working as a reporter for the Chosun Ilbo in Seoul. Gilsangsa is a temple where Baekseok's lover, “Jaya,” Kim Young-han, gave his entire property to the Buddha. Also known as a “modern boy” English teacher, he became a re-North Korean poet with the division. Following his journey of life.

Yun Dong-ju, the poet of <Seo Poetry>, lived a shorter life than Mozart, who had lived 35 years. The most free period in his 27 years of life was when he attended a specialty in Seoul. It goes to Yonsei University campus, Yun Dong-ju memorial hall, and boarding house in Nusang-dong, Seochon, as well as the universities in Kyoto and Tokyo where Yun Dong-ju studied abroad, as well as Fukuoka prison, where he was arrested and killed. You can also read the touching story that brought you to the world by cherishing Yun Dong-ju's Yugoslavia in harsh times.

Park Soo-geun, a painter familiar to us, such as <Laundry> and <The Tree and Two Women>, is the epitome of genius artists. Park Soo-geun, who lived in poverty without a changeable atelier, is now Korea's representative painter and the most beloved painter. After graduating from elementary school, he was elected several times in the Joseon dynasty as a self-taught student and entered the path of a painter. It is a pilgrimage to the place where the portrait shop used to be, the homes of Changsin-dong and Jeonnong-dong, and the Park Sugeun Museum of Art. In addition, you can fully appreciate Park's representative works.

The biography of Lee Byung-cheol and Jung Ju-young, who led the Korean economy and made the Republic of Korea today, is also interesting. The two businesswomen who were born at the same time have very different backgrounds, but have grown “Samsung” and “Hyundai” into world-class companies. Visiting the birthplace of Lee Byung-cheol in Uiryeong and the former Samseong Chamber of Commerce, Hoam Museum of Art, and Seung Ji-won, which became the mother of Samsung.

“Honor to the genius!” “Thanks to the genius!”

In times of chaos, Seoul had geniuses, and geniuses burned their passion in Seoul. It will be a meaningful experience to reflect on their lives and achievements where the five geniuses have left their mark. But maybe it's a feeling of joy and pain coexisting. What is clear is that because they were there, we are now enjoying more spiritual and material abundance.

In that respect, the author's next words resonate greatly. “I didn't bury the tide in Seoul, but it was Seoul that they were in full bloom. After they came to the world, Seoul and Korea changed into a completely different world. We living in the 21st century owe a lot to five people born in the 1910s.”

So we may have to shout like this. “Honor to the genius!” “Thanks to the genius!”

Below is the main content of <in the text>.

○… The “Baekseok Syndrome” quickly escaped from the barriers of Yeongsaeng High School and spread to Hamhung High School students. It is difficult to remember Baekseok, an English teacher, for a long time only by appearance. His ability was also good, but his teaching method was innovative. He introduced conversational classes to students who were familiar with the memorized teaching method. ― Page 38

○… More shocking was Ran's marriage partner. It was my friend Shin Hyun Joong! I was disappointed. Here is the story. After Baekseok went, Ran's mother came up to Seoul when confusion came in here and there. His mother asked Ran's brother to find out about Baekseok. My brother asked my junior, Shin Hyun-joong, for personal information about Baek-seok, but Shin Hyun-joong brought in Heo Joon from here. Heo Jun only talked about the facts, and added one last sentence. “The man is good, but his mother is said to be the daughter of a gisaeng.” ― Page 41

○… Mong-gyu and Dong-ju saw the light of the world three months apart. The two maintain a common destiny relationship throughout their lives. The two cousins and friends, sometimes as competitors, sometimes as partners, deeply influence each other. The two were even arrested equally in Japan and sentenced side by side in the same prison. Such cases of cousins are very rare worldwide. The intellectual exchanges between the brothers we know include Vincent Van Gogh, his brother Theo, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and his older brother Mikhail Dostoevsky. ― Page 74

○… On the wall of an ordinary family house, a copper plate called "Yun Dong-ju Boarding House Site" was seen. Okin-gil retains the tradition and dignity of Seochon. I don't see a piece of tissue on the side of the road. Cute stories like the Park No-Soo Museum of Art are embedded like jewels in the gaps of the alleyways. Small but elegant cafes and artist's ateliers were seen everywhere. ― Page 93

○… The woman handed out photos to painters, and once a portrait was drawn on a scarf, she returned it to the US military. To the painters, she was “A”. The daily wage went up and down depending on how many jobs she gave. She was 17 years younger than Park Soo-geun, but called Park Soo-geun "Mr. Park." This woman makes her debut as a novelist in 1970 when she was elected as a novelist in the ≪Women's Donga≫ feature novel contest. This is Park Wan-seo, who started late at thirty-nine.

― Page 159

○… From here on, the name of the road is'Park Soo Geun-ro'. Park Soo-geun-ro is stretched through the arteries and thread veins. Even on the shabby low wall, pictures from textbooks are drawn. 'Park Sugeun Village','Park Sugeun Park','Cafe Sugeun Sugeun','Soogeun Sugeun Insect Country'... … . It is noisy with the sound of ‘수근’ everywhere. I even get the illusion that the whole city is not Park Soo-geun Gallery. The walls, the walls of the shopping mall, and the exterior walls of the apartment are all full of his paintings. There is also a sculpture of <Girl with Baby Raised> in the open ground. “Park Soo-geun's hometown” is engraved with the image. The image is the message. His artistic spirit is like a tree root, covering the entire village evenly. ― Page 185

○… Looking at it now, I think sugar production is a great thing, but it was a tremendous event at the time. At the time, sugar was 100 percent dependent on imports. This was 51 percent in 1954 and dropped to 7 percent after two years. In his autobiography he says: “The success of CheilJedang was the first step for Samsung to become a modern producer, and at the same time, it could be said that it was Korea's first pioneer capital that turned away from commercial capital and converted to industrial capital.” ― Page 220

○… After buying three meals and paying the rent, it wasn't comparable to selling a day with nothing left. 12 bales of rice in one year! Two years after coming to Seoul, I got my first job at work in the morning. I was happy and happy that I felt like I had become a proud son to my father in my hometown. That is 1934. The rice shop job wasn't even a job compared to farming. He was ready to do well because he had suffered enough to suffer the gods of the world. The first day after I got a job, I went to the store and cleaned the front of the store and sprinkled with water. As I learned from my father, I did my best to do my best without tricking. ― Page 265
