Google “It was difficult for Naver and Kakao to succeed globally without Google Play”

Google's decision to charge a 30% commission on all content payments sold on its Google Play is "to build a sustainable global ecosystem," he explained.

Funima Kochika, head of global game and app business development at Google Play, explained this at an online conference with Korean reporters on the morning of the 29th.

According to a statement from Google, Google Play, an app marketplace, is helping content developers grow in the Android ecosystem and giving them opportunities to enter the global market. It also emphasized that it provides a convenient experience for users.

If the 30% commission policy was deemed unfair, he said that he could not use Google Play.

“The Google Play payment system provides powerful tools and services for digital content developers to enter the global market,” said Coach Car. “Kakao's Piccoma has been ranked in the top 10 apps in the Japanese market, and Naver Webtoon’s line Manga is also gaining steadily in popularity in Japan, and this success would have been difficult without Google Play's payment system.”

Regarding the 30% fee, it is used for app development and testing, system maintenance and management, and developer support, saying, "It is to charge a fee for the successful business of the developer and for the stable use of content by the user. The proceeds from the fee are reinvested in the entire ecosystem." He expressed his position.

Google also announced that it will operate a “K-reate” program worth 115 billion won ($100 million) over the next one year to develop the Korean digital content ecosystem. This seems to have entered into an operation to appease the situation that will be a burden on users by applying a 30% in-app payment fee.

Through the Create program, Google will provide support for developers that provide digital content services such as webtoons, web novels, music streaming, and e-books, as well as provide a wide range of benefits, including price cuts, to users who use the service.

Following the'Google Play Indie Game Festival' and'Callout Program', which were programs supported by existing developers, it plans to provide discounts on webtoons, web novels, and music streaming, as well as various Google Play point accrual promotions.
