명지대학교 미래교육원 문화콘텐츠과 전통 민화반 학생 22명의 작품을 전시하는 단체 전시회가 8월13일부터 21일까지 서울 운현궁 기획전시실(서울시 종로구 삼일대로 464번지)에서 열린다. 주제는 “K-민화를 꿈꾸는 신사임당의 후예들(아래 그림 게재는 무순)>”.
명지대학교 미래교육원 문화콘텐츠과 전통 민화반의 이미형 주임교수는 이 전시회에 대해 “ 조선조 중기 명종 선조 때에 대학자 이이(1536~1584)가 있었다. 호는 율곡이다. 당대 유학계의 거두 이황과 쌍벽을 이루었던 대학자였다. 그의 어머니가 바로 대한민국 최고액 화폐 오만원 권의 주인공인 신사임당(1504~1551년)이다”고 소개하고 “신사임당이라 하면 우리 민화 계에서 빼놓을 수 없는 잠자리, 벌, 나비, 풀벌레 등의 그림을 남긴 ‘초충도’의 주인공이다. 또 자수와 서예에도 뛰어나, 해서 한 폭과 초서 여섯 폭을 남겼다. 그녀가 이이를 낳기 전에 다음과 같은 태몽을 꾸었다. 신사임당이 동해 바닷가에 갔는데 바다 속에서 한 선녀가 살빛이 백옥같이 흰 옥동자를 안고 나와 그녀의 품에 안겨주었다. 그 후 출산하는 밤에도 검은 용이 동해로부터 날아와 산실 머리에 서려 있는 꿈을 꾸었다. 출산 후 신사임당은 아기를 낳은 방을 몽룡실(夢龍室)이라 하고 아기 이름도 현룡(見龍)이라 하였다. 현룡이란 용이 나타났다는 뜻이다. 이 일화를 통해서도 신사임당은 민화에 천부적인 소질을 가지고 있었다는 것을 알 수 있다. 알다시피 용은 민화의 주요 소재 중 하나”라고 강조했다.
신사임당의 효성은 지극했던 것으로 알려져 왔다. 신사임당은 어머니를 두고 대관령을 넘어 서울로 갈 때 아래와 같은 시를 읊었다.

서울 향해 홀로 가는 외로운 마음이여
때때로 머리 돌려 북평을 바라보니
흰 구름은 날아내리고 산은 저물어 가네“
명지대학교 미래교육원 문화콘텐츠과 전통 민화반의 이미형 주임교수는 “명지대 미래교육원 문화콘텐츠과 민화 교육과정 수강생 여러분들은 모두 신사임당 후예들로서 신사임당의 민화의 DNA를 물려받았다”고 피력하고 “지금 세계는 K– 콘텐츠에 열광을 하고 있다. 신사임당이 옥동자의 꿈을 꾸고 걸출한 이이를 낳았듯이, 우리도 용 그림을 그리면서 세계적인 용 그림이 될 수 있는 K- 민화의 꿈을 꾸자. 꿈(★)은 이루어 진다”고 강조했다.

이 대학의 미래교육원 문화 콘텐츠과 민화반 김민지 학생회장은 이 전시회와 관련 “코로나 팬더믹 시대를 맞이하여 밖으로만 돌던 나에게 삶의 무료함이 다가올 때쯤 새로운 경험을 하게 되었습니다. 바로 캘리그라피이다. 제가 차분히 앉아 붓으로 한글을 쓰며 옛 멋에 어느덧 푸욱 빠지게 되었다. 그러던 중 한국의 정서를 담은 그림… 바로 민화를 알게 되었고 정말 운명처럼 만나게 되었다. 좋은 사람들과 뜻깊은 그림에 채색을 한 붓 한 붓 그어나가며 벌써 두 계절이 지나 강렬한 여름을 맞이했다”면서 “태양보다 더 뜨거운 대한민국의 얼이 담긴 민화로 여러분을 맞이해 보려 한다. 민화를 그리는 동안 모두의 마음에 기쁨과 설렘으로 한 장 한 장 그렸다. 마음이 평온해지는 시간이 되었으면 좋겠다. 선조들이 머물고 생활했던 운현궁이라는 이 유서 깊은 곳에서 조상들의 혼이 담긴 민화 전시회를 개최한 ‘명지대학교 미래교육원 문화 콘텐츠과’ 이미형 교수님과 학우 여러분들에게 진심으로 감사드린다”고 알렸다.
