‘The granddaughter of General Jeon Bong-jun is still alive.’…May the truth be revealed!

-Dr. Yongkyu Park

Last year, I published a series of articles about Dr. Jeon Jang-su (acquired a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Korea University Graduate School in 2008), who revealed that he is the great-grandson of General Jeon Bong-jun four times through Break News (the media) last year. This time, I would like to introduce the surviving General Jeon Bong-jun's granddaughter, Jeon Su-geum.

Jeon Bong-jun (1855-1895)'s first wife, Yeosan Song ((1851-1877, 27 years old), had their eldest daughter Jeon Ok-rye and second daughter Jeon Seong-nyeo. , the descendants are hoping to reveal whether Jeon Bong-joon is a survivor.

Jeon Bong-jun's second wife, Lee Soon-young (1860-1903, 44 years old), the second wife of the Nampyeongi clan, had the second son Jeon Jeon-hyeon (1882-1941, 60 years old) born. The person who claims to be a descendant of Jeon Jeon-hyeon is Dr. Jeon Jang-soo. Dr. Jeon Jang-soo is said to publish his collection of poems <The Longing of My Life> (Subtitle: Jeon Jang-soo Poems, a great-grandson of General Nokdu Jeon Bong-jun, Bomin Publishing House) on May 30th. The point is that in this collection of poems, Dr. Jeon Jang-soo proudly states that he is the 'great-grandson of General Nokdu Jeon Bong-jun'.

Jeon Bong-jun's third woman was the first to be revealed to the media. She had a first lady, Kim Geum-hae (金錦海) of the Gimhae Kim clan. The information about Kim Geum-hae and her descendants was obtained last year from Jeon Jin-hee, who has been studying Jeon Bong-joon's ancestry. Jeon Jeom-dong (now deceased) was born to Jeon Bong-jun and Kim Geum-hae. Jeonjeom-dong had three children. Son Jeon Heung, Jeon Won, and daughter Jeon Soo-geum fall into this category.

Jeon Su-geum (photo provided by Jeon Su-jeong on May 21, 2022)

Jeon Heung (gun number: 1306911) was a military veteran who participated in the Korean War and was killed on June 25, 1950. She is enshrined in the memorial pavilion at the National Cemetery in Seoul National Cemetery, 29th edition, page 3, number 118. Jeon Jeong-ja, the daughter of Jeon Heung, was transferred to the Army Lieutenant Colonel, and she is currently alive. The former (now deceased) has two sons, two of whom are still alive. Jeon Su-geum (born in 1939, now 84 years old) has one son. All are alive.

On April 15, 2021, Jeon Jin-hee told me that her grandmother Jeon Su-geum had told me, "She is the descendant of a rebel, so don't tell me that she is the descendant of Jeon Bong-jun." Hearing this, I was amazed. As she thinks of the pain her grandmother must have suffered while she was alive, her heart ached and ached.

Son Ju-gap (born 1949), grandson of General Son Yeo-ok, leader of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, was well aware of Jeonjeom-dong and Jeonsu-geum. On March 19, 2021, Joo-Gap Son gave the following important testimony to the author.

“I have a granddaughter of General Jeon Bong-jun. There was a little father (Jeonjeom-dong) at a tofu house in Jeongeup. Jeon Soo-geum is the daughter of Jeonjeom-dong. Her older sister Jeon Soo-geum is about 83 years old. When she was a child she looked down at the ceremonies. She has been on the phone since 2004 when she spoke to her sister one day she gave up. She said, "Her father was Jeon Bong-jun's wealthy man." His grandfather was Jeon Bong-jun. Your grandfather was General Son,” she said. After that, she met Kim Dong-hoon, a former principal of Jeonju, Jeon Jin-hee, who lived in Cheongju, and I went to meet Jeon Soo-geum. Her older sister Jeon Soo-geum resembles Jeon Bong-jun in her head and all. The teaching of the Jeon Su-geum family was “Let’s live quietly”. Jeon Su-geum's older brother Jeon Won was alive. The former said, "Let's live quietly." I (Son Ju-gap) met Jeon Su-geum's female alumni in Jeongeup, and the female alumni said, "Oh, Jeon Bong-jun's granddaughter." It is said that a classmate who had seen Jeon Bong-jun's portrait at Jeongeup City Hall said to Jeon Soo-geum, "Hey, I went to Jeongeup City Hall, and there was a person just like you."

It was a vivid testimony. On May 21, 2022, near Samsong Station, I met Jeong Su-jeong Jeon (54 years old), the son of Jin-hee Jeon. Su-Geum Jeon said that her father was very interested in General Bong-Jun Jeon’s family lineage, and that her father went to the place where her grandmother Jeon Su-Geum was, and that she drove a lot to the writer when her father visited her grandmother, Su-Geum Jeon. he said a lot Jeon Soo-Jung gave me one photo of Jeon Soo-Geum and one photo of Jeon Soo-Geum and her father, taken on November 5, 2019 at the Yeoju Nursing Home.

In a subsequent phone call with the author, Sujeong Jeon gave the following important testimony. “I have a child of an electron source. Jeon Soo-geum's son is around 50 years old. Jeon Su-geum's son said, "I've never gotten a candy cane or a piece of gum from people with the Jeon surname. If you get a candy cane and eat it, I will bow down and cooperate. Being a descendant of Jeon Bong-jun is uncomfortable. Don’t come forward.” He told me (Jeon Soo-jeong).”

From this testimony, we can confirm that Jeon Soo-geum and his son received no benefit from the state just because they were descendants of Jeon Bong-jun.

Afterwards, I was introduced to Jeongeup Seo Elementary School classmate of Jeon Su-geum by Son Ju-gap. Hong Bok-rye (born in 1938, 85 years old, living in Seoul) said to me on May 22, 2022, “I was in the same class as Jeon Su-geum from the first to sixth grades of elementary school. Jeon Su-geum was smart and a very good friend. He studied well. He was poor and had no money, so he could not go to middle school. When I was in elementary school, Soo-Geum Jeon told me, “Jeon Bong-Jun is his grandfather.”

On May 23, 2022, alumni Heo Ok-seon (born in 1938, 85 years old, living in Busan) told me, “I was in the same class with Jeon Su-geum from the 3rd grade to the 6th grade. Jeon Soo-geum had a manly personality, and was bubbly like a man. When he was in elementary school, he was learning Donghak-ran, and Jeon Su-geum told him, “It was his grandfather who started the Donghak-ran.” He has a photo of Jeon-Geum,” he said. On May 24, 2022, alumni Okseon Heo sent me a photo of Jeon Soo-geum. The photo states that it was taken on October 12, 1962.

Currently, General Jeon Bong-jun is evaluated as a fighter in the anti-feudal democratic revolution in Korea who led the first and second Donghak Peasant Revolutions and as the commander-in-chief of the anti-Japanese armed struggle. Therefore, direct descendants of Jeon Bong-jun are descendants of the democratic revolutionary fighters and they deserve respect as descendants of the commander-in-chief of the anti-Japanese armed struggle.

Genetic testing includes a paternal blood test and a maternal blood test. When descendants participate in genetic testing, it is said that it will be revealed whether they are of the same paternal lineage or the same maternal lineage. The Donghak Peasant Revolution Participant's Honor Restoration Deliberation Committee hopes that the descendants who wish to find out whether Jeon Bong-jun is a survivor will be given consideration for genetic testing. I hope that the survivors who are undergoing genetic testing will be generously provided with daily wages and transportation expenses.

Within the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Foundation, a special corporation of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, there is a ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution Deliberation Committee on Restoration of Honor’. Shin Soon-cheol, chairman of the ‘Donghak Peasant Revolution Participation Review Committee for Restoration of Honor’, which took office in April 2022, hopes to finish the registration of General Jeon Bong-jun’s bereaved family as soon as possible.

Journalist Lee Young-hee said in an interview with KBS (‘Modern History of People’) on June 4, 2004, “It is not the state that I try to protect, even at the risk of my life. It's definitely not patriotism or anything like that. It's true,” he said. The same goes for me. It's true. For those who claim to be the relatives of General Jeon Bong-jun, the South Korean government has a responsibility to reveal the truth as to whether they are survivors or not. hispak@hanmail.net
