Why did President Yun Seok-yeol cross his legs at the Korea-US summit?

“President Yoon Seok-yeol’s leg twist is not even a special topic, which proves that Korea’s status in the world has risen.”

-Jongpil Yoo, Special Advisor to former President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol

The most impressive thing to my eyes at the Korea-US summit held on May 21st was the scene where the two leaders of Korea and the United States were sitting side by side with their legs crossed. Americans usually cross their legs. Women are no exception. It's not uncommon for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to cross her legs in a skirt. On the other hand, cross-legged legs are a taboo for Koreans. A decent person does not cross his legs even in front of his subordinates. Avoid twisting at the ankle as well as above the knee.

Crossing legs is also said to be very bad for health. In addition to temporarily twisting for stretching, the habit of twisting legs asymmetrically stresses the herniated disc and not only causes indigestion, but also stresses blood vessels. In other words, it is a very bad attitude.

Then, why did President Yoon Seok-yeol sit side by side with US President Biden and cross his legs that he said was harmful? Rather, there was a time when I was called by the nickname ‘Jeobeolnam’, wasn’t there? To my eyes, President Biden's cross-legged legs seemed natural. It was the attitude of a ‘proficient assistant’. On the other hand, President Yoon Seok-yeol's legs crossed looked awkward like a 'novice cross-legged man'. Why did President Yun Seok-yeol take an awkward posture that he does not usually do?

“The way you talk with each other/ The look in your eyes that says I’m the truth/ I have a burning desire to win/ I stretched out my short legs and crossed my legs/ Don’t cross your legs, don’t cross your legs, don’t cross your legs”

The lyrics of Akdong Musician's <Don't Cross Your Legs> fit wonderfully, as if they had predicted this case. I don't know if President Yoon Seok-yeol crossed his legs with a similar mentality.

In fact, there is a case in which a Korean crossed his legs in front of the US president and became a hot topic. Ahead of the 1987 presidential election, Roh Tae-woo, the candidate of the ruling Democratic Party, visited the United States and sat next to President Reagan at the White House. At this event, which was prepared as a result of the relentless diplomatic efforts of the Chun Doo-hwan administration, Candidate Roh Tae-woo displayed his unique agility and made a huge profit outside the net. The appearance of candidate Roh Tae-woo, who sat side by side with Reagan and crossed his legs, was featured in the domestic media, creating a lot of topics. Even though he is not yet a president, “crossing legs” with the president of the world’s most powerful country, who is 21 years older than him, came as a great shock to Koreans. The relatively dwarf candidate Roh Tae-woo's physique was reflected once again as a confident figure. Considering that Korea-US relations at that time were a subordinate relationship that could not be compared to today, it is not an exaggeration to say that it was regarded as a 'big feat of a Korean boy'. Candidate Roh Tae-woo, who returned to Korea, gave a shout out to reporters who asked why he crossed his leg. “President Reagan crossed his legs, so I just crossed my legs,” and the answer, roughly speaking, once again became a topic of discussion.

After that, South Korean presidents, such as former President Kim Young-sam, were often shown cross-legged only when sitting next to the American president. Ex-President Kim Dae-jung, who has a leg problem, was an exception, and former President Park Geun-hye, a woman, did not produce such an appearance.

If Koreans do not regard cross-legging as a rude act, there is no need to confront each other with the same act no matter how much they cross their legs. The paradox that there is no choice is established. In diplomacy, “pictures” are as important as the content, so if this is a kind of diplomatic reciprocity, then it is reciprocity. Now, as the years have passed, President Yun Seok-yeol's legs crossed is no longer a topic of discussion. Isn't that proof that Korea's status in the world has risen?
