더불어민주당이 4.7 재보선에서 참패했다. 민주당 지도부를 제외한 모두가 예견한 패배였고, 이변은 없었다. 선거를 지휘한 이낙연 전 민주당 대표가 '3% 이내 박빙 승부'를 주장했으나, 결과는 두 자리 수 표차의 완패였다. 특히 서울시장 선거에서 박영선 서울시장 후보는 39.18%를 득표해 57.50%를 얻은 국민의힘 오세훈 서울시장 후보에게 무려 18.32%나 뒤진 것으로 나타나 충격을 주고 있다.
이번 선거는 첫 단추부터 잘못 꿴 선거였다. 선거의 원인을 제공한 민주당이 무리하게 당헌ㆍ당규를 고치면서까지 후보를 내면서 민심을 거슬렀다. 명분을 잃더라도 실리를 얻겠다는 전략이었으나, 결과는 실리와 명분을 모두 잃은 최악의 정치적 선택이었음이 드러났다.
선거 기간 내내 각종 여론조사를 통해 야권 후보의 승리가 예견되었음에도 불구하고, 민주당은 고정 지지층의 지지에 기대 승리의 헛꿈을 꾸고 있었다. 민주당 사람들이, 특히 지도부와 의원들이 얼마나 민심에 어두운지 잘 알 수 있는 대목이다. 거대여당이 주는 달콤한 권력에 취해 집권 세력의 불공정과 부동산 정책의 무능에 분노하는 민심의 폭발을 모르고 있었던 것이다. 왜적이 쳐들어 올 때까지 술판을 벌이는 고을 수령의 모습에 다름 아니다.

이번 선거의 패인은 민주당 내부에 있다. 승패를 결정한 중도층과 청년층은 국민의힘이 좋아서 찍은 것이 아니라 민주당을 혼내기 위해 '징벌 투표'에 나선 것이다. "패자는 여당이되 승자는 분명치 않다"는 윤희숙 국민의힘 의원의 선거 평이 이를 말해주고 있다. 그 누가 야당 후보가 되었더라도 민주당은 참패할 수밖에 없었다. 문제는 민주당 내부에서 이를 인정하지 않는다는 것이다.

가장 큰 문제는 대선을 앞둔 집권당으로서의 정체성이 부족하다는 것이다. 지금 민주당의 절대적인 목표는 정권재창출이다. 그런데 당은 친문 강경파들이 좌지우지하고, 청와대의 눈치만 보는 '관변 정당' 같은 모습을 하고 있다. 청와대의 변창흠 국토부 장관 유임 결정에 한 마디도 못하고 선거를 치르는 모습에서 과거 민정당의 어두운 그림자를 떠올리게 된다. 지금 민주당은 청와대만 바라보는 안타까운 모습이다.
소수 강경파 의원들의 부적절한 언행도 문제다. 잘못을 반성하지 않은 채 중도층과 청년들의 분노를 폄하하거나 꾸짖는 언행은 결국 중도층과 청년층의 이반이라는 정치적 부메랑이 되었다.
국민의힘 등 야당과 대화하지 않는 지도부의 태도도 문제다. 야당과 충분한 대화 없이 다수당의 힘으로 법안을 통과시키고, 인사청문회를 무력화시키는 것은 거대여당의 오만으로 비쳐진다. 정의당과의 약속을 저버리고 협치를 말하는 모습도 표리부동하다.

이번 선거는 민주당 대선구도에 큰 영향을 미치게 될 것이다. 선거의 키를 쥔 중도와 청년의 표를 몰아올 후보가 대선 승리를 가져올 수 있다는 것이 분명해졌다. 이는 결국 확장성의 문제로 이어져 영남 출신인 이재명 경기도지사의 경쟁력이 더욱 부각될 전망이다. 상대적으로 호남 출신인 이낙연 전 민주당 대표와 정세균 총리의 입지는 좁아질 것으로 보인다. 친문 후보로는 정권재창출이 어려워졌다는 것도 자명해졌다.
