베이징 동계올림픽이 10개월 앞으로 다가왔다. 내년 2월 4일~20일 중국 베이징에서 치러지는 동계올림픽은 여러모로 국제적인 관심을 끌고 있다.
우선 오는 7월 23일~8월 8일 치러질 예정인 도쿄 하계올림픽이 코로나19 팬데믹으로 실패로 돌아갈 가능성이 커졌다.
북한은 지난 6일 도쿄올림픽 불참 결정 사실을 전격 공개했다. 북한 당국이 내세운 이유는 코로나19 사태로부터 선수들을 보호하기 위한 조치라는 것이다. 이로써 가뜩이나 어려움에 처한 도쿄올림픽은 더욱 곤궁한 처지에 놓이게 되었다. 당초 지난해 치러질 예정이었던 올림픽이 국내외의 취소 여론 등으로 혼란을 겪은 끝에 1년 연기돼 겨우 개최되게 되었으나, 해외관중 입국 금지로 반쪽 올림픽이 되는 바람에 수조원의 경제적 손실은 물론 국가 이미지에도 심각한 타격을 입게 됐다. 특히 북한의 불참 선언이 다른 국가들의 연쇄 불참으로 이어질 경우 도쿄올림픽은 역대 최악의 올림픽이라는 오명을 뒤집어쓰게 될 것이다. 북한의 참여로 평화 올림픽을 구현했던 한국의 2018 평창 동계올림픽과 크게 대비 되는 모습이다.
반면 베이징 동계올림픽은 10개월 후에 처러지게 돼 코로나19 사태가 상당히 안정된 상황에서 열릴 전망이다. 현재 세계 각국이 코로나19 백신 접종에 속도를 내고 있어 베이징 동계올림픽이 열릴 시점에는 집단면역이 이뤄질 가능성이 크다는 전망이다. 또한 현재의 북중 우호 관계로 미루어 볼 때 북한도 참가해 국제적인 관심을 끌 것으로 보인다. 코로나19 팬데믹 탓에 흥행에 실패한 도쿄 하계올림픽과 달리 베이징 동계올림픽은 코로나19 극복 이후 처음으로 치러지는 국제 스포츠 축제가 될 가능성이 크다.
중국 당국도 베이징 동계올림픽의 성공을 위해 큰 관심과 노력을 기울이고 있다. 시진핑 국가주석이 올림픽 경기장 건설 상황을 직접 점검하고, 왕이 외교 담당 국무위원 겸 외교부장도 최근 중동 국가들을 순방하며 베이징올림픽에 대한 국제사회의 지지를 요청했다.
