Writer Kim Young-sik publishes'The Cross on Manguri Hill', a story of Christians in Manguri Park

The story of countless Christians sleeping in Manguri Park, Jungnang-gu, Seoul

-Artist Kim Soo-jong

Many Christians are asleep in Manguri Park, Jungnang-gu, Seoul. It is located on the border between Seoul and Guri and has been used as a cemetery for 40 years. In the early days, people mainly lived in Seoul, but people who were not related to the province occupied the place.

After liberation, many people from North Korea who sought freedom of religion from South Korea descended and settled in Seoul, and Christians without regional origins mainly settled. So, you can easily find small crosses on tombstones all over the place. Anyway, there are more tombs of Christians in Manguri Park than I thought.

A book titled <The Cross on Manguri Hill> (Homeros) by Kim Young-sik was published in early March, focusing on the stories of celebrities that can be understood by just hearing their names. In the early 2000s, 20 years ago, what would have happened if writer Kim Young-sik's story of Manguri Park, <Walking Between Him and Me-Humanities Reading in the Manguri Road> (published in 2009) was published?

Kim said, “If books were released sooner than 10 years ago, the number of people who moved to the National Cemetery would have decreased, and Manguri Park would have become a more important place in terms of history and culture.” Growing up in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, where Manguri Park is located, artist Kim has been researching only Manguri Park and related modern and contemporary history and human history for the past 20 years.

He is a person who is so immersed in Manguri Park that he starts his daily routine by turning on his computer and searching for'Mangwoori' when he comes to work in the morning at his office in Jungnang-gu. He unearthed about 60 celebrities sleeping in Manguri Park and published his first <Walking Between Him and Me-Humanities Reading in Manguri Road> in 2009.

It has been reinforcing data and increasing the number of people each time, publishing three revised editions so far. Manguri Park was used as a municipal communal cemetery from 1933 to 1973 by the Japanese imperialism, and it has been 50 years since it has been planted continuously in the place where it has been relocated, and now it has been transformed into a civic park.

Now Manguri Park is a huge museum of modern and contemporary history with independent governors such as Han Yong-un, Oh Se-chang, Moon Il-pyeong, Bang Jeong-hwan, Jo Bong-am, and Park Hee-do, and cultural artists such as poet Park In-hwan, painter Lee Joong-seop, Lee In-seong, sculptor Kwon Jin-gyu, playwright Ham Se-deok, and singer Cha Jung-rak. have.

At one time, the Manguri Cemetery was a place of worries that no one wanted to find (it cannot be called Mangwoo). But now, walking along the road between life and death, between the deceased and me, it is becoming a park of "Nak Yi Mang-woo (joy 而忘憂-the words in the thesis), who enjoys enlightenment and forgets worries."

It can be said that the humanities foundation for this change was published in 2009 and published in 2009 and continues to be loved by readers until now, by author Kim Young-sik's book ``Walking Between Him and Me-The Humanities Reading on the Road between Manguri''.

After the publication of the book, Kim has steadily communicated the value of Mangwoori through hundreds of lectures, and has been continuously discovering celebrities through additional research. During this research process, a new branch called “Christians” is the recently published “Cross on Manguri Hill Footprints of Korean Christian History”.

In his new book, Kim is re-examining the history of Christianity in Korea, focusing on Manguri Park. It is said that he read the entire Bible from the beginning, not a Christian for data research and research. In this book, first of all, Ahn Chang-ho, a leader of the Korean people who worked hard to unify the provisional government, appears.

In addition, Taeheo Sang-gyu Yoo, the eternal secretary of Dosan Ahn Chang-ho as a first-year student in Gyeongseongjeon, Kim Bong-seong, a patriotic governor of Dosan, a niece-in-law and a member of the Heungsa Dan, Hyangsan Lee Young-hak, a patriotic governor who studied Hangeul. , Adventist Sunan Medical School educator Chudam Heo Yeon, and Kang Hak-rin, who led the March 1st Movement in Seongjin, Hambuk, known as the great-grandfather of singer Kang Su-ji.

In addition, Elder Songam Seo Byeong-ho Saemunan Church, who was the first Christian infant baptist in Korea, who was the grandfather of Pastor Kyung-seok Seo, who served as secretary general of Gyeongsil-ryeon, Novelist Kim Mal-bong, who was the first female Christian elder, Patriot Governor Seo Gwang-jo, and Yu Gwan-soon's motive of Lee Hwa-dang. Mrs. Kim Bun-ok is introduced.

In addition, we dealt with Dr. Jo Bong-am Joksan, head of the Progressive Party, and Eung-seon Oh, who served as the first medical missionary in Korea and former director of Severance Hospital. In addition, he is one of the 33 Declaration of Independence Declaration of Independence, Park Hee-do, who served as the head of the Central Childcare School, the first Jupil of the Dong-A Ilbo, Seolsan Deoksu Jang, and Dr. Kong, Dr. Kong, Hosik Kim, who was the first Mormon believer in Korea.

In addition, we discussed the lives of 24 Christian figures who fell asleep at the tomb of Manguri, such as Socheon Kang, a children's literary writer who filled the vacancy of Bang Jeong-hwan, Takumi Asaka and a Japanese folk craft researcher who became our eternal friends, Otosaku Saito, the first forest manager of the Chosun Governor General who planted poplars and acacias on the Korean peninsula. have.

As can be seen from the fact that 16 out of the 33 national representatives of the March 1st Movement were Christian figures, Christianity, which was secretly introduced into the public from the 18th century, contributed significantly to industrialization and democratization after liberation, as well as the modernization and independence movements in Korea.

In other words, you need to know the history of Christianity in Korea to see the full picture of our modern and contemporary history. Therefore, <The Cross on Manguri Hill-The Footsteps of Korean Christian History> is a must-read for educated people who enjoy the humanities, not limited to Christians.

Manguri Park has many pioneers with the modifiers ‘first’, ‘invitation’, and ‘initial’ in one place due to the nature of the period of use of the cemetery. The same is true of Christianity. It conveys the history of Korean Christianity, which is the background of their lives, as well as their lives with numerous people and Christianity.

Also, as Christian figures, not only the patriotic governor, but also the regrettable apostasy and long-established death, both Japanese people, are embraced, so this is the same as the Christian spirit. Manguri can be said to be a place that retains more diverse religious and humanistic stories than the National Cemetery, in that they all forget all the spiritual desires of the world and live together in Manguri.

Among these, five members, including Ahn Chang-ho, Seo Byeong-ho, Civilization, Kim Bong-seong, and Kang Hak-rin, were relocated to the Hyeonchungwon, but the remains of them vividly convey their traces. Their tombstones are valuable cultural assets that are evidence of history.

At the end of the article, the author also added stories of commoners who are Christians, but not famous. The writings that the husband dedicates to his wife and the words her mother dedicates to his son who died young make our hearts feel. The name of Dr. Hyeon Bong-hak, the hero of Heung Nam-cheol-soo, is also engraved on a tombstone as a bereaved family member.

At the beginning of the book, the author said, “Walking through Manguri Park, I hope to find people who have practiced the Christian spirit in real life and who have been indifferent to them, and at the same time give them an opportunity to look back on their own lives. Furthermore, I hope that Manguri Park will emerge as a place for a new pilgrimage.”

Author Kim Young-sik, the author of <The Cross on Manguri Hill>, was born in Gyeongsang-do and grew up in Seoul. He is currently working as a translator, mangwoo humanities scholar, and graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at Chung-Ang University. In 2002, he received the Quarterly Litopia Newcomer Award (essay), and his blog “Japanese Literature Hobby” was selected as an excellent literature site by the Literary Arts Promotion Agency in 2003.

He received the Forest Service Director's Award (2012), Lee Topia Literature Award (2013), and Seoul Story Teller Award (2013), and performed research on Manguri Park in Seoul and Jungnang-gu. Director of Korea National Trust, Chairman of Mangwoori Subcommittee. He is a member of Jungnang-gu Culture and Arts Promotion Committee and Mangwoo Historical and Cultural Park Promotion Advisory Committee.

In his book, A Walk Between Him and Me-Humanities Reading in the Manguri Crossroads (2009, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) was revised to the 3rd edition (2018), and in 2019, I cried in a single line-Thoughts contained in the masterpiece haiku. And remember> there is.
